  1. Is Mushroom Leather Actually Durable? The Truth About Eco-Friendly Textiles

    Sustainable fashion has a materials problem.

    We’re constantly being introduced to the next miracle textile: mushroom leather, pineapple leather, recycled ocean plastic, plant-based alternatives and fabrics that supposedly give us all the luxury of traditional materials without the environmental baggage.

    And honestly? Some of these innovations are genuinely exciting.

    But there’s a catch.

    Calling something “plant-based,” “vegan,” or “recycled” doesn’t automatically make it sustainable. A material can begin with an agricultural waste product and still require synthetic coatings, energy-intensive processing or additional plastics before it becomes a usable handbag or pair of shoes.

    That’s why the better question isn’t simply “Is this material eco-friendly?”

    It’s:

    What is it made from, how is it manufactured, how long will it last, and what happens to it when we’re finished with it?

    So let’s look at three of the most talked-about alternatives: mycelium leather, Piñatex pineapple leather and recycled ocean plastics.

    No glossy sustainability promises. Just the material story.

    What Does “Leather Alternative” Actually Mean?

    Before we get into mushrooms and pineapples, there’s one important distinction.

    Traditional leather is an animal-derived material made from hides that are processed through tanning and finishing.

    A leather alternative attempts to reproduce some of the same qualities—flexibility, strength, texture and durability—using another material.

    The problem is that natural fibers don’t automatically behave like animal hide.

    A mushroom doesn’t grow a handbag.

    A pineapple leaf isn’t naturally a shoe upper.

    These raw materials have to be processed, bonded, coated or otherwise engineered into something that can survive daily use.

    And that’s where the sustainability conversation gets interesting.

    1. Mycelium Leather: Is Mushroom Leather Actually Durable?

    Mycelium is the underground network of fungal structures that helps mushrooms grow.

    It’s incredibly interesting from a materials-science perspective because mycelium can be cultivated into dense networks and processed into sheets with a leather-like appearance.

    Unlike conventional synthetic leather, which is generally petroleum-based, mycelium offers a biological starting point.

    Sounds perfect, right?

    Well, not quite.

    The Texture

    One of the most appealing things about mycelium-based materials is their texture.

    Depending on how they’re manufactured and finished, they can have a surprisingly sophisticated surface that resembles suede or smooth leather.

    There’s also a slightly irregular quality to some versions that makes them feel more organic rather than artificially perfect.

    For minimalist accessories, that can actually be a selling point.

    The Durability Question

    This is where consumers should slow down.

    Mycelium materials are still an emerging category, and “mushroom leather” isn’t one standardized material with identical performance characteristics.

    Different products can use different fungal substrates, manufacturing processes, coatings and backing materials.

    That means one mycelium-based handbag shouldn’t automatically be assumed to have the same lifespan as another.

    Some commercial mycelium materials are engineered specifically for improved strength, flexibility and abrasion resistance.

    But traditional leather has an enormous advantage: decades—sometimes centuries—of established processing knowledge.

    A high-quality leather bag can develop a patina and potentially be repaired repeatedly.

    Mycelium alternatives may not behave the same way.

    The Hidden Ingredient Problem

    Here’s the detail sustainability marketing sometimes skips.

    A biological material may still receive synthetic coatings or backing layers to improve water resistance, strength and appearance.

    That doesn’t make it “fake.”

    It simply means the finished product isn’t necessarily 100% mushroom.

    So when you’re shopping, don’t stop at the phrase “mycelium leather.”

    Look for the actual material composition.

    That’s where the real story is.

    2. Piñatex: The Pineapple Waste Innovation

    Piñatex is one of the better-known plant-based leather alternatives.

    The concept is clever.

    Instead of growing a crop specifically to produce leather-like material, Piñatex uses fibers from pineapple leaves, an agricultural byproduct.

    That means the raw material can come from existing agricultural activity rather than requiring a separate plantation dedicated to producing the textile.

    From a circular-economy perspective, that’s genuinely interesting.

    The Texture

    Piñatex has a distinctive appearance.

    Rather than perfectly imitating buttery smooth leather, it tends to have a more fibrous, slightly textured surface.

    For casual bags, sneakers and accessories, that texture can look intentional and modern.

    It’s not necessarily trying to fool you into thinking it’s calfskin.

    And that’s a good thing.

    The most convincing sustainable materials don’t always need to pretend they’re something else.

    What About Longevity?

    Piñatex can be durable enough for certain applications, but its performance depends heavily on the specific construction and finish.

    Some versions incorporate coatings to provide protection and improve performance.

    Again, this is why looking at the entire material composition matters.

    A pineapple-derived fiber is exciting.

    But if the final product depends heavily on synthetic components, you shouldn’t treat it as automatically biodegradable simply because the marketing emphasizes pineapple leaves.

    Is It Worth Paying More?

    Potentially—but only if you’re buying a well-designed product.

    A cheap accessory made from an innovative material isn’t necessarily a better sustainability purchase than a durable secondhand leather bag that you can use for 15 years.

    That’s the uncomfortable part of sustainable shopping.

    Material innovation doesn’t cancel out product quality.

    3. Recycled Ocean Plastics: Cleaning Up the Sea or Repackaging Plastic?

    This category gets particularly complicated.

    You’ve probably seen labels advertising bags, jackets and shoes made with “ocean-bound plastic” or recycled plastic recovered from coastal areas.

    The idea is compelling.

    Plastic waste enters waterways, manufacturers recover some of that material, process it and turn it into new fibers or products.

    Instead of allowing waste to remain in the environment, we’re giving it another use.

    Great.

    But there’s an important distinction between recycled plastic and plastic-free.

    They’re not the same thing.

    The Durability Advantage

    Synthetic fibers have one obvious advantage: they’re generally engineered for performance.

    Recycled polyester, for example, can be used in products that need strength, flexibility and resistance to moisture.

    That’s one reason recycled synthetics can be more practical than some newer experimental biomaterials.

    A recycled-polyester jacket can be extremely useful.

    The material may also give existing plastic waste another life.

    But There Is Still a Microfiber Problem

    Recycling plastic doesn’t eliminate its synthetic nature.

    When synthetic textiles are washed, they can release tiny fibers.

    So the sustainability equation doesn’t end when a recycled plastic garment leaves the factory.

    It’s also about how you wash, use, repair and eventually dispose of it.

    This is why “made from recycled ocean plastic” should be treated as one sustainability feature, not the entire sustainability story.

    So Which Material Is Actually Best?

    Here’s the frustrating answer:

    There isn’t one universal winner.

    Each material solves a different problem.

    Mycelium

    Best for: Material innovation and future-facing luxury alternatives.

    Strengths: Biological origin, interesting texture and significant potential for lower-impact material production.

    Weaknesses: Emerging technology, inconsistent performance between products and potential synthetic coatings or backing materials.

    Piñatex

    Best for: Plant-based accessories and products where distinctive texture is desirable.

    Strengths: Uses pineapple leaf fibers that can be derived from agricultural waste.

    Weaknesses: Finished products may include coatings or other materials, and durability varies by application.

    Recycled Ocean Plastics

    Best for: Performance products such as outerwear, bags and activewear.

    Strengths: Gives existing plastic materials another use and can offer strong technical performance.

    Weaknesses: Still synthetic and doesn’t eliminate concerns around microfiber pollution or end-of-life recycling.

    The Sustainability Test You Should Use Before Buying

    Forget the beautifully photographed sustainability campaign for a moment.

    Ask five questions.

    1. What exactly is the material?

    “Plant-based” isn’t enough.

    Look for the percentage composition.

    2. Is it coated?

    A natural or recycled base can still be finished with polyurethane or other synthetic coatings.

    That doesn’t necessarily make it a bad product, but you should know what you’re buying.

    3. How long will it last?

    This may be the most important question of all.

    A $300 sustainable bag that falls apart after one year isn’t necessarily a better purchase than a $300 vintage bag that lasts another decade.

    4. Can it be repaired?

    Repairability is often overlooked.

    A replaceable strap, repairable sole or accessible hardware can dramatically extend a product’s useful life.

    5. What happens at the end?

    Can the material actually be recycled?

    Is it biodegradable?

    Does it contain multiple bonded materials that make separation impossible?

    This is where many sustainability claims become much less straightforward.

    The Real Luxury Is Longevity

    We’re living through an interesting period in fashion and design.

    The industry is finally experimenting with materials that could reduce dependence on conventional leather and virgin petroleum-based textiles.

    That’s worth celebrating.

    But consumers shouldn’t confuse new with better.

    The most sustainable material isn’t necessarily the one with the coolest name.

    Sometimes it’s the fabric that already exists.

    Sometimes it’s the secondhand leather bag that somebody else no longer wants.

    Sometimes it’s the recycled polyester jacket you’ll wear for ten years.

    And sometimes it really is an innovative mycelium material that proves a completely different manufacturing model is possible.

    The trick is learning to tell the difference.

    The Bottom Line

    Mushroom leather isn’t a miracle.

    Piñatex isn’t automatically biodegradable.

    Recycled ocean plastic isn’t plastic-free.

    But none of that means these materials are useless.

    Quite the opposite.

    They represent an important shift toward experimenting with agricultural waste, biological materials and existing waste streams instead of endlessly producing virgin resources.

    The next step is holding the industry to a higher standard.

    Don’t just ask “Is it sustainable?”

    Ask “How sustainable, compared with what, and for how long?”

    Because the future of conscious fashion isn’t going to be built by finding one perfect material.

    It’s going to be built by making better materials, designing products to last, repairing what we already own and—perhaps most importantly—buying less stuff that we don’t actually need.

    That’s a much less glamorous answer.

    But it’s probably the honest one.

    "With the season about to shift to autumn, my mind has been focused on the final steps to restore the exterior of my log house. A project I thought would take one summer is now rounding out the end of its third. And this summer, which I thought would surely be the last, will likely leave some important steps left for next year. My inner voice repeatedly chants, 'Perseverance, dear girl. Perseverance!'

    "When I began this journey into the unknown, I decided to leave work on the east wall of the house for last because, in my preliminary assessment, it looked like it would require the most time and attention. Our bitter Minnesota winters and scorching summer heat had definitely taken a toll. Dense forest surrounds my place and is closest on the east side, creating persistent shade and humidity, and poor air circulation, that together contribute to more rotting and insects. Saving the worst until last was a big, big mistake. I learned too late. Never save the hardest stuff for the end. I know that now because, in my current state of project fatigue, facing that east wall is a bit like facing El Capitan.

    "I thought I was so smart back in May when I jumped on that string of nice days we had and scraped, scrubbed, and sanded five decades of detritus from that east wall just to ready it for the first coat of penetrating stain that would protect the logs from rot and bugs for many years to come. No one could have predicted that June would produce some of the heaviest rains in centuries, followed by weeks of what meteorologists called 'pop-up showers' that showed up on a nearly daily basis until mid-July.

    "It would take many weeks before the now saturated logs would dry thoroughly enough to stain. My frustration with the weather spawned waves of anxiety. Our summers are short, and time was a-wastin’! I knew I’d have to review the priorities on my to-do list and recalibrate the timetable. What I needed to identify was an indoor project until the weather decided to cooperate.

    "I found myself completely shifting gears from exterior log work to something indoors. The lightbulb went on. I could start upgrading my 1980s experiment with #solar power. The equipment I’d installed way back then still functioned, but I knew it was losing its zip and was shockingly obsolete. This could be my opportunity. I resumed researching where I’d left off last winter. I determined how much power I would need and how much I could invest in new equipment. I also realized that I would need to construct an area suitable to assure my system could be kept warm in the winter. I decided to design an insulated 'closet' in my three-season addition.

    "For that month of sequestration, I created a personalized Intro to Carpentry 101 crash course. Thanks to the generous array of battery-powered saws, drills, bits and blades that my sons had gifted to me at Christmas two years ago and some great YouTube videos I found, I was able to complete my first solo construction project. And now I have power! That rainy weather I’d so lamented had in fact allowed me the experience of learning to read a tape measure right down to the '16ths', and everything else involved. My next #DIY challenge will be wiring my own house.

    "Finally, the weather began to cooperate. The logs were drying. But before I could start staining, I would need to insulate and seal the spaces between the logs. In times past, log builders would often turn to whatever materials were on hand whether #moss and #straw, shredded newspaper, or scraps of cotton and #woolen clothing. Today, the 'make-do' materials of our ancestors have been replaced by manufactured products such as fiberglass batts, spray foam, and 'elastometric' caulks, all of which I considered, until I discovered oakum.

    "Oakum is made from multiple twisted strands of #jute and #hemp soaked in #PineTar and #bentonite, a compound derived from #VolcanicAsh. It is easily manipulated to fit the varied spaces between the logs and accommodate variations from their knots and other unique features. It acts as a natural deterrent to insects and can swell or shrink with changes in humidity, enhancing its sealing capabilities. It’s been around for centuries with one of its first uses in shipbuilding when skilled maritime craftsmen would salvage worn ropes from ships’ rigging to repurpose as filler for cracks and leaks in their 16th- and 17th-century wooden sailing ships. Later it was used to build the massive networks of pipes that transport drinking and wastewater underneath our major cities. It’s still used for many modern-day plumbing repairs.

    "Working with oakum has taken some getting used to. Like so many aspects of my restoration project, it’s been another trial-and-error process, learning what it can and cannot do, requiring my patience and concentration in an almost meditative way. There is an art in how tightly to twist it, so it conforms and fills the nooks and crannies endemic to log buildings. I was able to purchase a vintage shipwright’s cast iron caulking tool that has proven to be perfect for the job. I sometimes muse the by-gone era when Maritimers masterfully employed the skills I’m just learning, ones that allowed for vast ocean crossings. I appreciate attempting a traditional practice that I hope will not be lost.

    "I must confess. At times, I’ve questioned my sanity, as may have some of my friends. This endeavor to restore my cabin began in sheer ignorance, and has tested every part of my being — body, mind, and spirit. My biggest fear this year has been that I might 'age out' before it’s complete, something that would be a huge disappointment to me, and a burden left for somebody else.

    "I owe my family, friends and community thanks for their patience and support. I’ve turned down many invitations to commit with my truth, 'If it’s a sunny day, I’ll need to work.' Next summer, I’d like things to be different. But this year has shown me, when it comes to time, or the weather, there are no guarantees. Our priorities will sometimes need discernment and adjustment. And everything we choose to do has the power to message something meaningful.

    "In many a stressful moment, working with oakum has messaged me this. Take more time when you can. And appreciate the twists and turns."

  4. Ripped out a bunch of morning glory invasive vines - more to rip out, tomorrow afternoon. It's too hot now to keep at it. I'm in basement, cooling off.

    Gathered some fallen rose petals to infuse with water with tiny bit of vitamin C powder to make my own DIY #NaturalDyes to tint paper & fabric😊🥀

    *If you use on fabric, lock colour in for longer by soaking in the #HomemadeDye for 24 hours, followed by soaking in 1:20 salt & water solution for another 24 hours.

    Next month, I'm going to experiment with infusing rose petals into different cooking oils & use to try staining some wood with it. It's fun to play around & see what I can come up with 😀
