  1. #NaturalGardening
    #OrganicGardening

Inspired by Chris Peckham's and Iolo Williams' bird-off in this year's #WinterWatch, my wife and I used breakfast to count species we could see through the lounge window:
    blackbird
    bluetit
    carrion crow
    goldcrest
    great tit
    greenfinch
    grey heron
    hawfinch
    sparrow hawk
    (+ beak of a starling 🙄 )
    woodpigeon
    wren

    Yesterday also:
    bullfinch
    chaffinch
    cormorant
    great spotted woodpecker
    ? gull
    magpie
    sparrow (tree/house)
    starling (January!)

  2. Planting day, and we were blessed with more rain. If even 5% of the seeds we planted germinate and produce something, it will be a banner year.

We take a different approach to growing things. I recently went to a class on planning Fall/Winter gardens in our climate, and so much of the advice revolved around starting in trays, purchasing inputs (albeit organic ones) and growing in raised beds.

"Gardening is expensive" one attendee lamented.

No! No! We reject this -- all of it!

I'll be releasing a comprehensive discussion of how to garden without inputs later - even if you can't have a perfect closed cycle system because you live in an apartment or are otherwise restricted, I'll be discussing how to minimize inputs and rethink the way you garden.

We'll touch on building soil and soil fertility, common pitfalls even organic growers fall into, natural "pest" management, maximizing water utilization, seed saving, and improving your land's yield year after year instead of creating resource debt.

This will be a post for paid subscribers only, so if you can spare the cost of a cup of coffee a month (is a coffee actually $5 anywhere anymore?) and you feel like this information could benefit you and your community, consider subscribing at the paid tier. Your subscription funds trees! And us feeding our family! So that's fun.

Looking forward to sharing more later 🌿

  4. "Stop trying to get on top of the weeds, the mess and the endless tasks. Just sit down amid the chaos of your garden at the height of summer and see it for the beauty it holds, not the things it has failed to be. A kind friend said to me recently that “a messy garden is better than an empty one”.

  10. It seems like the #TimeOfFlowers #season has barely begun and I'm already hopelessly behind on sharing photos! Things move fast at this time of year, new things opening every day or so, previous waves of flowering wrapping up.. These are from 10 days ago, some finished or on the way out.. White Draba dedeana Yellow Draba aizoides and D. bruniifolia ssp olympica. Tulipa urumiensis (or something..) #garden #RockGarden #spring #NaturalGardening #Alberta #Canada #z3

  12. #InsectFriday Police Car Moth (named for a time and place when police cars were black and white!) Gnophaela vermiculata. Not super abundant, but not uncommon here and sometimes a number seen at once. This one was late July last year on Achillea/Yarrow in the yard or #garden (there are wild, cultivated and self sown hybrids around) #insects #inverts #NaturalGardening #pollinators #WildlifeGarden #Alberta #Canada

  13. CW: cute 'longhorn' beetle on flowers

#InsectFriday #FlowersOnFriday From June we have this Evodinus monticola one of the Flower Longhorn Beetles on both Rhodiola rosea ex Newfoundland seed and Trillium grandiflorum in the #garden.. #Beetles are one of the first (long before bees existed) and still important #pollinators.

  14. CW: cool looking fly on plant

Hmm I could make this #InsectThursday or #InsectFriday or how about #FlyDay
Anyway, this cool customer was in the garden last #June so I guess #ThrowbackThursday works too 😉
Funny:posted it on iNaturalist, their system recognised right away that it was a photo of a Lonicera/Honeysuckle - the plant the fly is sitting on- from the close-cropped photo! Impressive, except it didn't notice the fly at all..

  15. 🦌⛔🌿 Deer Resistant Herbs for Resilient Gardens

Do you garden in the presence of deer? We do! While many of our choice veggies and flowers are protected, we also grow many herbs unprotected. 🫨

I’m excited to share some of our fav deer resistant herbs:

  16. CW: tiny cryptic spider on sedge flowers

I thought I was just photographing the flowers on this beautiful native #sedge that has self sown in the rock garden.. they have rather complicated flower structures, so I didn't realise there was something extra! I had to look at it for a bit on the computer screen to decide it is a #spider right?
posting this one to iNat too..

  17. A little talky #video of some pre-winter #gardening work I did today-- the bed is not finished, but there will be more pressing things to do this week, with a likely change in #weather next week!

  18. CW: slug and bees on flowers + clouds, sunset, photo collage

    #SevenOnSunday a variable week, as most of them are! A #slug on Inula rhizocepala flowers on a #WetDay little #bumblebee on Agastache in #sunshine tiny #bees chasing the merely small on Tanacetum/Tansy, #trees and #clouds tinted by pre/ #sunset and a view toward the distant #RockyMountains #ShareYourWeather #Alberta #BorealForest #pollinators #NaturalGardening #July #florespondence #BloomScrolling #landscape @plants @nature

  19. CW: bees, flower fly, flower wasp on flowers

#FlowersOnFriday #InsectFriday combo deal! We started the week warm, Monday around 28C humidity around 60 -90% over the daylight hours, then a bit cooler, yesterday didn't make 15, with rain off and on, today forecast for 13 with some rain.
#Pollinators will be sleeping today, mostly, and #flowers looking soggy, but I did capture some earlier in the week!

  20. @plants #SixOnSaturday from the #garden . This set of #flowers / #plants shows some of the #sweet #funny #circuitous ways #PlantCollectors operate: here's the funny one: top left native Allium cernuum (I also have pink) grown from seed of plants grown in France, from seed collected at Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump in Alberta..lol #florespondence #BloomScrolling #Alberta #Canada #July #NaturalGardening #GrowFromSeed #GardenFriends

  21. CW: teensy spider, cool fly in a photo collage with flowers

Well I got Friday and Saturday posts on time, but while the #SevenOnSunday collage was ready before work yesterday, posting after work was not happening...lol so here's a mostly #cool #white /lavender palette: may it help any of you dealing with #heatwaves ! #Alberta #ShareYourWeather #Bloomscrolling #florespondence #spider #FlyDay #ArthroBeauty #NativePlants #gardening #NaturalGardening

  22. @plants @nature Another (late 😆 ) #Throwback to #July #InsectThursday #FlowersOnFriday + #FlyDay +early #WildflowerHour Illustrating the value of as wide a range of flowering plants as possible, both many natives and exotics- especially those that extend the season at times fewer natives are flowering (here that's both early + late, though I do have non-natives flowering all summer).

  23. @plants @nature #InsectThursday #ThrowbackThursday #RockGardens are great for #pollinators- I have flowers from early spring (before native plants start) until covered by snow in mid-late fall. #Bees of all sorts love the #flowers on this low mounding Paederota bonarota (Potentilla nitida and Sempervivum behind) like this flashy #bumblebee ! And check out the blue and yellow pollen bundles in the close crop! #Alberta #NaturalGardening #florespondence #FlowerFriday

  24. CW: flies on flowers

@plants @nature #InsectThursday #ThrowbackThursday late #June + some of the vast number of #pollinators that enjoy Gypsophila repens over its season long #flowering! These are a cool Syrphid Fly #FlowerFly (so many beauties in this family-flying jewels!) and a fierce looking Tachinid Fly- their larvae are parasitic on other insects(if you want insect populations in balance, you need lots of species of insects!) adults active on #flowers #NaturalGardening #Alberta #biodiversity

  25. CW: long post plant stuff

So far in my life, #spring has always come, after winter, and even #summer after that, so I believe it will happen again, even if it doesn't seem possible on mornings like this- below -30C

  26. @plants @nature #florespondence Early afternoon Monday, still in post breakfast stage, recovering from my Fri-Sunday work week (3 staff short yesterday, but no shortage of customers 😅 ) Finally ready to post my #SixOnSaturday (had the collage ready Sat night, no oomph to find words!)
