Planting day, and we were blessed with more rain. If even 5% of the seeds we planted germinate and produce something, it will be a banner year.
We take a different approach to growing things. I recently went to a class on planning Fall/Winter gardens in our climate, and so much of the advice revolved around starting in trays, purchasing inputs (albeit organic ones) and growing in raised beds.
"Gardening is expensive" one attendee lamented.
No! No! We reject this -- all of it!
I'll be releasing a comprehensive discussion of how to garden without inputs later - even if you can't have a perfect closed cycle system because you live in an apartment or are otherwise restricted, I'll be discussing how to minimize inputs and rethink the way you garden.
We'll touch on building soil and soil fertility, common pitfalls even organic growers fall into, natural "pest" management, maximizing water utilization, seed saving, and improving your land's yield year after year instead of creating resource debt.

It seems like the #TimeOfFlowers #season has barely begun and I'm already hopelessly behind on sharing photos! Things move fast at this time of year, new things opening every day or so, previous waves of flowering wrapping up.. These are from 10 days ago, some finished or on the way out.. #InsectFriday Police Car Moth (named for a time and place when police cars were black and white!) Gnophaela vermiculata. Not super abundant, but not uncommon here and sometimes a number seen at once. CW: cute 'longhorn' beetle on flowers
#InsectFriday #FlowersOnFriday From June we have this Evodinus monticola one of the Flower Longhorn Beetles on both Rhodiola rosea ex Newfoundland seed and Trillium grandiflorum in the #garden.. #Beetles are one of the first (long before bees existed) and still important #pollinators.

Funny:posted it on iNaturalist, their system recognised right away that it was a photo of a Lonicera/Honeysuckle - the plant the fly is sitting on- from the close-cropped photo! Impressive, except it didn't notice the fly at all..

I thought I was just photographing the flowers on this beautiful native #sedge that has self sown in the rock garden.. they have rather complicated flower structures, so I didn't realise there was something extra! I had to look at it for a bit on the computer screen to decide it is a #spider right?

These are a cool Syrphid Fly #FlowerFly (so many beauties in this family-flying jewels!) and a fierce looking Tachinid Fly- their larvae are parasitic on other insects(if you want insect populations in balance, you need lots of species of insects!) adults active on #flowers #NaturalGardening #Alberta #biodiversity
