  1. King opens world's longest #CoastalPath around #England

by Justin Rowlatt, March 20, 2026

"King Charles has inaugurated a new footpath stretching around the entire coast of England.

"At 2,689 miles long, it is the longest managed coastal walking route in the world, according to #NaturalEngland, the government body which created it.

"Its name is quite a trek too - King Charles III England Coast Path - but for the first time it creates a continuous trail, allowing walkers to explore England's shoreline step by step.

"Along the way, it passes through some of the country's most beautiful and varied landscapes, from #SaltMarshes and sandy #beaches to #cliffs, #dunes and historic coastal towns.

    [...]

"Much of the new coastal route already existed, but more than 1,000 miles of new paths have been created, and many other sections upgraded. Paths have been resurfaced, stiles removed, boardwalks built and bridges installed."

    [...]

"Natural England says that in many places, new rights of access have opened land that was previously off-limits to the public - including beaches, dunes and cliff-tops between the path and the sea.

"It says #accessibility for those with reduced mobility has been improved so that more people can enjoy sections of the trail."

  2. Have you ever wondered links Silurian sea creatures, red skies all night, the anchor of the Titanic, and a National Nature Reserve?

Here's a really good way to find out:

  3. Butterfly population in Britain halves in 2024.
Tony Juniper #NaturalEngland chair: 'The butterfly data is an early signal of what lies ahead.. a warning from nature as to how far we’ve gone towards taking the resilience out of natural systems. This circles back on people in terms of our food security which depends on that web of life still functioning.'

  4. #Sunak’s government has almost destroyed #NaturalEngland – just for doing its job

After the election, Labour must end the attacks on a watchdog that is simply trying to protect what little #wildlife we have left

  5. Anyone else up for some more #immigrant diaries?

    @ukgovcamp
    @FlipboardUK
@ anyone else who might want a 'fun' story about how much I 'love' living here.

    I got an email.

"Link your eVisa to your account"

Following the initial process, you need to confirm your identity on the UK Immigration ID Check app.
The app is not available on my iPad.
The UK ID check (different app!) is not usable by UK Visas and Immigration.
My /e/ OS phone is not accepted by the Immigration ID Check app because I modified it to have that OS.
My partner's phone has the app, but the camera *refuses* to actually photograph my BRP.

so I get the 'lol try again, idiot' error message.
Except I have, and now I can't. (Even if I could and did, the camera in their app is the gd problem.)

Aaaaaand I can't get a 'share code' from online because I started linking my eVISA whatever.

So. The advice: is to share, with employers, etc:

    My plastic BRP photocard.

The thing that share codes are supposed to replace.
The thing that I need to get the share codes.

The thing that the eVISA is supposed to replace (maybe??) next.
That also requires it to link the account.

Oh yeah, did I mention I can't get a new BRP easily because my USA passport allows 'X' gender (yaaay!) and the UK computer systems don't?

I had to call and ask wtf was going on months later.

(The dude who answered was super apologetic and nice about it, but he shouldn't have had to apologise for a ridiculous system failure. There should always be an 'unknown / prefer not to answer / other' option on ANY question. Dare I say it? Should be the default value.)

Still no idea what's going on with that.

  6. Thanks to @vicgbuswell in the audience, photographic proof that I was in Inverness last week presenting at the #UKDNAWG24 meeting - the conference programme is on ukeof.org.uk/our-work/ukdna/20 as a PDF.

The tables of in-silico primer amplification versus taxononomic lineage shown were generated with github.com/peterjc/picobio/blo and sister scripts. This was work done for a #NaturalEngland project, looking at #metabarcoding primer biases for terrestrial invertebrates - release of formal report pending.

  7. As a scientist who wishes she had some artistic talent, I was fascinated by this report, which looks at "how historical landscape paintings, drawings and prints can support existing technologies in terms of informing us of the rate, scale and pace of coastal change."

The summary on the download page goes on to say that "The case studies and annotated art images provided in this report suggest locations where habitat management has proved to work successfully. The study also shows sites where climate change and development pressures pose existing or potential challenges."

    Enjoy!
