I have a lot of winged elm growing around my house. I had read that you could get golden yellow from the leaves, but I didn’t expect it to be this deliciously buttery on cotton! I’m quite pleased with this golden yellow. I used a 1:1 ratio of fresh leaf/fabric on tannin/alum mordanted cotton.

I collected some fresh black walnuts last October. In January, I placed the hulls in a jar and filled with water and just let it sit for 6 months. Yesterday I heated those hulls up in the dye pot and soaked a piece of cotton fabric overnight, and it produced this nice brown color.

Next on the menu 🍽️ is a steaming pot of fresh winged sumac (Rhus copallinum) leaves. I’m using these for the tannin content to prep cotton fabric. Even though I only used a 1:5 leaf:cotton, it turned out a beautiful lemon yellow color. #naturaldyersofmastodon #dyeplants #handmade #textileart
