  3. Heyyyy mastodon!

It’s time for a snapshot #introduction of me, and how I'm hoping to contribute to this platform

My name is Cassie and I run a Philadelphia based community craft and art group. The group started 9 years ago on another well known platform and over the years it stopped serving our purposes. My hope is that this space can help connect our local community and inspire others to follow suit.

I prefer she/her and they/them pronouns and I default to using they/them pronouns with new people that don’t specify a preference.

    I'm an #artist, #crafter, #organizer, and #designer. In order of most experienced to least, I utilize and teach the following skills: #leatherwork #accessorydesign #handembroidery #chainstitchembroidery #basketweaving #handbuildingclay #bookmaking #printing #surfacedesign #naturaldyeing #felting #spinningyarn #painting #drawing

I like to create, I have a love of aquatic fish, mushrooms, bugs, bones, prismatic colors, texture, line work, anything tufted, and gin is the way to my heart.

I look forward to sharing my creations and offering support with questions about any skillsets that I am able!

  8. Inspired by Caitlin Ffrench's book Gathering Colour, I planted indigo in my #CommunityGarden plot this year. I can't be arsed to deal with an indigo vat in our apartment, so I experimented with fresh leaf indigo dyeing.

    Some things I learned:

    1. Salt & whole leaves mashed into the fabric (the shawls at each end) yielded bluer tones; blender slurry with cold water & salt (the scarves in the middle & the yarn) gave greener tones.

  9. today is the test batch to dial in the color intensity I want to target

.5 oz of unmordanted merino yarn loosely tied as a mini skein inside a cheesecloth bag with g of usnea in tap water held between 160-175 for 1hr resulted in a lovely yellow extraction. peeking at the yarn so far its a very very pale yellow.

so far not sold on using the cheesecloth and will probably forgo it next round and hoping to see a more vibrant color tomorrow 🤞

will be leaving everything together in the dye pot overnight and check in on the color before making some final decisions... #dye #NaturalDyeing #LichenSubscribe #Lichen #FiberArts

  10. am excited to embark on my second lichen dyeing adventure this time with usnea lichen (aka old mans beard) and some skeins of merino

"Getting Started with Lichen Dyes" by Alissa Allen in Fungi mag has been a great intro

  11. I guess I never really posted the original three:
    - weld (bright yellow)
    - madder (red)
    - cochineal (pink)

The uneven colour was not deliberate

    #naturalDyeing

  12. Last three which I didn't post about:
    - walnut (off white)
    - rhubarb extract with a little madder (peach)
    - weld saddened (darkened) with iron

  14. You guys seem to like the quilts! Here’s my fifth one. The next project is going to be an all blue baby blanket for my cousin’s kid, but shhh, don’t tell her, it’s a surprise!

  16. The natural dye plants that arrived in early December are growing really well.

I think the Lemon Sorrel is ready to harvest the first of it's leaves. I need to do some urgent research on whether I can dehydrate and store the leaves as a powder, or if I have to dye it with fresh leaves. #naturaldyeing #plantdye #sorrel

  17. I recently learned that avocado pits supposedly make a self-mordanting dye. I think I should just need to bring this to a boil and then simmer for a while.

Note that you should make your dyes in a pot you never make food out of, even though this one has no chemicals. Do avocado pits have cyanide? In any case "natural" does not mean "safe".

I've just got one pit so this may come out a very "subtle" colour. The red was there before from previous projects.

  18. I’ve got workarounds for small products, but finding somewhere to photograph my mannequins/dress forms wearing the clothes I make has been an ongoing saga. There are some tiny corners I can use but I can’t get a full height pic there.

And it’s not as if I live in the kind of spacious home that has lots of bare walls — ahahaha nope! too many bookcases — nor could I transport my mannequins back and forth easily on my bike!
