  1. Learn more about #ChiefMaquinna.

This is a collection of words, photos and video clips for Hyas Tyee #Nuuchahnulth - Chief Maquinna. A greatly respected & important Chief of the Nuuchahnulth #Haida People, of the Haida Gwaii Islands, in #BritishColumbia #Canada.

Chief Maquinna (also transliterated: Muquinna, Macuina, Maquilla) was the Chief of the Nuuchahnulth People of #NootkaSound, during the heyday of the maritime fur trade in the 1780s and 1790s, on the #PacificNorthwest Coast.

British explorer #CaptainCook went looking (like so many #Europeans before and after him)or the Northwest Passage. He ran headlong into a thriving trade and business culture on the west coast, overseen by young Nuu-chah-nulth, Chief Maquinna.

The two men's encounter would forever change trans-Pacific trade and teach the European empire a lesson in diplomacy, they've managed to forget, many times over.

  6. Tsahaukuse, George Quocksister Jr. is a #HereditaryChief of the #Laichkwiltach Nation and the son of Elizabeth and George Quocksister. He is a passionate advocate for the protection of #WildSalmon as a crucial part of his culture and the food security of his people, and is working to ban the practice of #SalmonFarming on the west coast. He lives in Campbell River, BC.

This is from our 2020 #DiscoveryIslands flotilla protest & restocking patrol with George & 2 other BC Indigenous Chiefs(Darren Blaney & Bill Wilson) from North Island regions.

The fight to get fish farms out of BC waters started in the late 80s & continues.

  9. #BritishColumbia #FirstNations are initiating an #emergency #salmon #TaskForce to investigate the impact on the #sockeye salmon due to last week’s #Chilcotin River #landslide.

“Chilcotin Rivers are kind of our identity,” Nits’ilʔin (Chief) Francis Laceese, Tl’esqox said at a press conference on Tuesday.

“Same with the salmon, you know, that’s basically who we are. That’s our biggest food source.”

#Tŝilhqotin National Government (TNG) is calling on all levels of government, downstream First Nations, the #PacificSalmonCommission, and other nations and states, especially #Alaskan #fisheries, to take all precautionary measures possible to conserve Tŝilhqot’in territory-bound salmon, and to immediately cease from fisheries that may impact these stocks, until the impacts from the landslide and breach are fully understood.

A massive landslide came down last Wednesday, damming the Chilcotin River, which leads into the #FraserRiver

  10. In March, a small #nonprofit in #BritishColumbia cut 10 cheques worth approximately $5,500 each & hand delivered them to as many #FirstNations on southern #VancouverIsland. The money, collected in the second half of 2023, is the first annual installment of #voluntary #rents paid by residents & business owners who live & work on the First Nations’ homelands.

The #SouthIslandReciprocityTrust is the brainchild of Craig Candler.
