Today at the local nursery, I also picked up narrowleaf milkweed, Asclepias fascicularis. I'm pretty sure there are a few lacewing eggs as a bonus. Hot breeze made pics hard to get. #NativePlants

Monarch and meadow tangles.

The crickets sing, asters and goldenrods bloom with their rich jewel tones, the night air is cool.

Went to my local nursery to get some lettuce transplants for our small bunny. Found one remaining Salvia brandegeei, Santa Rosa Island sage. Imperiled in conservation status. A population on fire ravaged Santa Rosa Island & a small strip under development pressure in Baja. The plant looks like dried sticks in a pot. I've helped along other strugging natives. I've given the native buckwheat a good drink because of the extended heatwaves. It's the first full year for them in the ground. They are all offering up new blooms among the dry ones. #nativePlants

Hiking Upper Lena Lake part 7. But a really special place is about a mile farther on: this small lake called Milk Lake. Look at that color! These photos were shot on iPhone 13 Pro with no adjustments. Apple camera process does kind of oversaturate a bit but the real thing is very nearly this bright. That blue color is from dissolved minerals in the water (copper perhaps?). No fish here but there are tadpoles. All in all well worth the climb.

Hiking Upper Lena Lake part 6. Here is Upper Lena Lake itself, at about 4600 ft elevation. It's not very deep but it has fish, probably stocked by humans. There's a ranger station here (actually just a tent) and a few campsites, and a composting toilet which they must have airlifted in because it's far too big to get up that trail. #hiking #PNW #nativeplants #getoutside

Hiking Upper Lena Lake part 5. The trail climbs 4000 ft (1220m) into the Olympic Mountains. In the subalpine meadows all that's really blooming anymore is fireweed (Chamaenerion angustifolium) and cow parsnip (Heracleum maximum). But if you look close, there's always a few interesting little plants: the white leafed one is (I think) wooly sunflower (Eriophyllum lanatum) and the red beady one is Sedum divergens or Pacific stonecrop. #hiking #PNW #nativeplants #getoutside

Photo 2: some licorice ferns hanging on to the underside of a boulder. photo 3: there are quite a few Saxifrage family plants in the Pacific Northwest. This is one called three leafed foam flower (Tiarella trifoliata).

Hiking Upper Lena Lake part 2. This is a popular trail and the trailhead was full of scouts and families and dog walkers. The lower lake is only about 3 miles from the road and the trail is broad and well-used, and has these elaborate wooden bridges. Photo 2: for the love of God, people, take the poop bag with you. I mean I guess it was nice of you to clean up after your dog, but who did you think was going to come pick that up? The park service?

Another hiking thread! The Cascades in Washington State are on fire now. Remember when I posted about Stiletto Peak back in July? It's burning now. Remember when I posted about Lila Lake in late June? It's burning now too. So I took a trip west to the Olympic Mountains, to a place called Upper Lena Lake. It's just inside the boundary of Olympic National Park on the Eastern side of the peninsula, near Hood Canal. #hiking

Crevice garden of the day. This one is also in Oak Bay, North Channel Georgian Bay. You can see Joe Pye Weed and other native plants that have crept along the cracks from soil further in on the shore.
