  1. This ‘star catcher’ is 1000 years old.
    Astrolabes could be used to work out the time by looking at the position of the sun and stars and were also used in navigation.
    The plates inside this example are engraved with different place names, as well as lines showing prayer times.
    The inscription shows that the astrolabe was made in Córdoba, Spain, by Muhammad ibn al-Saffâr. Created in the year 417 of the Islamic calendar, which started in February 1026 AD.

  2. It always gives me a thrill - and is a reminder of what an enormous privilege I have in being able to #research this stuff - when you walk into a national #museum and know that the reason there's a blank space (only for a short time though!) is so folks like me can do what we do.....
