@wragge Now that they also make *ongoing* Trove Collaborative Services payments to #NationalLibraryAU how well does their business case still stack up?

At the start the Australian newspapers project made good sense.

Artworks not so ubiquitous with art galleries not broadly participating.

I used to think #TroveAU lists would be good integrators but non-persistent links and constant tinkering has left them weak.

NLA cancelling @wragge’s #Trove API key is mean and stupid. This is NLA’s “not invented here” chip on their shoulder.

Over many years I’ve been a big fan of Trove and then (maybe?) its regular critic. Not being part of the Trove-GLAM industry meant I had more freedom to criticise. Not because I enjoy criticising but because after Tim left it cared more about its reputation than about its users. Spin won out over diligence. Quantity over quality.

I wrote about #FundTrove presented as grassroots but really being a masked industry campaign. Recently I mentioned Trove budget’s double-dipping.

But people can’t keep “loving” Trove that takes them for granted. They can’t care forever.

@wragge How frustrating! One wonders if Trove even has in-house ability to update its own API? But this is SNAFU at NLA and has been for some years. (I know this is not news to you of course.) I think millions in funding doesn’t fix Trove in the absence of cultural change at NLA. NLA needs to stop seeing Trove as their love machine and start seeing themselves as a diligent service provider to the Australian public.

I’m looking at a “loose” sketchbook (no longer bound together) from this time in #NationalLibraryAU collection and wondering if it is in its original state/sequence or is a later recombination of pages.

(I really don’t want to classify all pages in several sketchbooks by subject and paper colour to possibly recreate single coloured sketchbooks!)

NLA's annual report came out this week. Of note is this result of the extra Trove funding:
"The Library is also removing fees for content contributors as part of Trove Collaborative Services (TCS) from July 2023." "Following the budget announcement in April 2023, the Library announced that fees associated with the lowest tier of the TCS pricing model would be removed from July 2023." I couldn't find a costing for this change in the annual report. (TCS income is about $3.8m a year.)

Unlike last year, this year's financial statements are an image inside the PDF and unfortunately "unsearchable". Why do people do that?!

If you haven't logged in to the National Library (catalogue or eResources) in the last couple of weeks, it's worth checking to see if you still can.
I was just told my existing library card didn't make it across to the new catalogue system, despite being a relatively regular user. So I needed to apply for a new card via https://www.nla.gov.au/getting-started/your-national-library-card.

The National Library of Australia further reduces accessibility with its new catalogue system. "Request this item" doesn't work in Windows XP. This follows on from Trove search failing under XP from April last year. Other institutions can release new catalogue systems without cutting off their XP users. (Issue reported to NLA.)
