  1. Quasit's Daily Book Recommendations: "National Lampoon A Dirty Book" (1976), edited by P. J. O'Rourke

In the 1970s and 80s, National Lampoon was at it's peak. It featured some of the most twisted and daring comic authors the world had ever seen, including Michael O'Donoghue, Doug Kenney, Anne Beats, Terry Southern, and Chris Miller—among others. In addition to the monthly magazine they also published books and records. Among them is "A Dirty Book", which features one of the most memorable covers of all time.

What can I say? It's twisted, dirty, and INCREDIBLY funny. Sexist too, of course; misogyny was definitely a big part of the humor of the time. So if that's going to ruin it for you, you'll definitely want to skip this one.

This is a hard book to find, by the way. It was never released as an ebook; neither Kobo, Barnes & Noble, nor Amazon 🤮 has it. You can borrow it for free from the Internet Archive (link below), but you can't download it. Even Anna's Archive doesn't have it! As for used physical copies, they're $10 and up.

There was also a sequel, "Another Dirty Book". That one is even MORE obscure and difficult to find than the first! It's not on the Internet Archive at all. I have a physical copy, but that's it.

I'd like to describe some of the stories, but I'm not sure exactly how far I can go here. In fact...I think I'll do a response to the post with a content warning, and put more details there.

    Happy reading! 🤓📖

  2. The National Lampoon Sunday Newspaper Parody came out at the peak of National Lampoon's glory days. Every page is worth reading closely; there are gems that will have you laughing out loud, every time.

News, sports, politics, comic strips, TV listings, ads...it's a whole NEWSPAPER from an insanely funny alternate universe. What else is there to say?

  3. NATIONAL LAMPOON
    Radio Dinner
    1972 U.S. pressing

An absolute classic comedy album, and the very FIRST National Lampoon record.

Yes, some of the humor here is a little dated, but a lot of it is still very funny, particularly the opener “Deteriorata” (Christopher Guest is a genius), and MY personal favorite “Those Fabulous Sixties”, a complete toasting of both Bob Dylan and the commercialization and sale of 60s hippie culture.

Along with Guest, there are some other dark and twisted minds appearing here, such as future SNL head writer Michael O’Donoghue and writer/performer Tony Hendra, who was in the movie Spinal Tap.

  4. Merry Christmas. I'm still bewildered #ClarkGriswold is a #chemist as revealed in #NationalLampoonsChristmasVacation. Would they ever make a movie about Clark in grad school? Or would #NationalLampoon magazine write an experiment or thesis in his voice? Are there any scientists so dopey? #christmasvacation

  6. NATIONAL LAMPOON
    White Album
    1980 Canada pressing

Of ALL the Lampoon records, this one is the LEAST funny. That may have something to do with the fact that it features almost UNKNOWN performers. With the exception of “Gay Alliance” (featuring Chevy Chase, John Belushi, and Christopher Guest), the whole record is littered with no-names and never-was’s.

Even the cover is painfully unfunny; an attempt at shock value, and a lame what at that.

I have no idea where I got this, and had no idea I even had it.
Whatever I paid for it, it was too much. Even if I got it for free.

  7. NATIONAL LAMPOON
    That's Not Funny, That's Sick!
    1977 U.S. Picture Disc

    Some early afternoon Friday chuckles.

I bought this from a used bin for $2, and was surprised to find that it was a picture disc inside.

Which I think is mismatched, because the picture disc version was ever released with a regular jacket and cover, but rather a single pocket open sleeve.

I’m guessing the person who got rid of it maybe had both and put it in there? Who knows.

Either way, I’m a bit of a collector of all the National Lampoon conedy records and soundtracks, and I’m glad to have this version for the image of the dog and gun alone. 😂

  8. "What are you looking at?"

"Oh, the silent majesty of a winter's morn... the clean, cool chill of the holiday air... an asshole in his bathrobe, emptying a chemical toilet into my sewer..."
