  1. Remember the Sixth National Climate Assessment (#NCA6)? In April 2025, all of its authors were released, and the report was halted. I was a Southwest chapter author.

Many of us former NCA6 authors just published what we could in its place. doi.org/10.1029/2025EF007336

What it is: a research priorities roadmap in AGU's Earth's Future. It identifies where the science has advanced since the 2023 NCA5 and where research is still needed. Some examples include compound extremes and cascading risks that overwhelm systems built for one hazard at a time, and the need to keep evaluating whether our climate responses work, including their health, economic, and environmental effects.

We also call for a network of national, regional, local, and sectoral assessments to keep synthesizing actionable science as impacts accelerate.

What it's not: a replacement for the National Climate Assessment. It doesn't include all vetted authors, has no public or National Academies review, and provides no findings for every region and sector.

Planners, public health officials, Tribes, and local governments relied on the NCA for decision-making, and right now nothing is filling that role.

I'm proud of what we salvaged. Please read and share, and keep asking for a real National Climate Assessment.

  3. Climate Erasure Replaces Climate Denial Under Trump Administration

The days of loudly debating the science have mostly given way to an effort to withhold the raw information itself.

  4. Trump administration shuts down #US #website on #climatechange
The U.S. Global Change Research Program’s website, globalchange.gov, was taken down along with all five versions of the #NationalClimateAssessment report and extensive information on how #globalwarming is affecting the country.

  5. American Geophysical Union (#AGU) and the American Meteorological Society Say They’ll Keep Working on #US #NationalClimateAssessment
The organizations said they would publish researchers’ work even after Trump administration decision to dismiss all authors on the project.
The new effort would not replace the federal report, which is Congressionally mandated, the statement from AGU and American Meteorological Society said.

  6. Trump’s #NationalClimateAssessment: No funding and all authors cut loose
Two weeks after cutting funding for the organization that coordinates the report's production, Trump informed all authors working on it that their services are no longer needed.
"The scope of the #NCA6 is currently being reevaluated," and "We are now releasing all current assessment participants from their roles."
The assessment is required by #Congress, but administration is not noted for caring.

  7. All Authors Working on Flagship #US #Climate Report Are Dismissed
The Trump administration told researchers it was “releasing” them from their roles. It puts the future of the assessment, which is required by Congress, in doubt.
The move puts the future of the report, which is required by Congress and is known as the #NationalClimateAssessment, into serious jeopardy, experts said.
For some authors, that appeared to be a fatal blow to the report.

  9. "The Fifth #NationalClimateAssessment, released on Tuesday by the Biden administration, is unique for its focus on the present.

All of the many #ExtremeWeather events that hit the U.S., from the tiniest flood to the biggest hurricane, cost around $150 billion every year — and that’s likely a huge underestimate."

  10. 2023 #NationalClimateAssessment paints grim picture while offering hope
It's not too late to act, but transition to #renewableenergy needs to happen much faster.
“The effects of human-caused #climatechange are already far-reaching and worsening across every region of the #UnitedStates,” the report says. But it adds each increment of warming avoided through cutting #carbon #emissions will reduce the risks and harmful impacts.

This is the first time the assessment includes standalone chapters about climate change's toll on the American #economy, as well as the complex social factors driving climate change and the nation's responses. "
