  1. This Naoussea, the "Lady of Naoussa," is a blend of Northern Greek Xinomavro vineyards (unlike the Estate wine) from Foundi winery, but it sure seems sophisticated.

Silky and tight, it has an earthy hint, plenty of power as it hits age 10, purity of fruit and fine acidity. The mid-palate finesse is admirable. It's old-school Xinomavro in the best sense, needing air and food. This is increasingly impressive as it sits.

    $30-ish, 13% alc.

  2. 2/2

It kept getting better, and I liked it more & more with food and air. It was gorgeous the next day.

It can still improve & last another decade, likely more. 13% alc, $40-ish

  3. This '04 Naoussa (all Xinomavro) is super. It has (no surprise) acquired more harmony in the cellar, but the brightness typical of the grape makes it fresh, lively and vibrant. If the tannins have moderated, this still has some power. The fruit is prime time, the mid-palate finesse is appealing.

Best of all, a fine bargain from big Boutari in Greece--around $30 in new vintages. This silky red looks like it will continue aging gracefully for 10+ years. 13% alc.

  4. @tofu Their young vines is very well done. If you're interested, a reasonably priced old-vines solution is Alpha Estate's Vielles Vignes. Their style tends to be on the more polished side. #wine #greece #xinomavro #naoussa

  5. Ok, so usually around now I divert from wine with some cute travel photo. I like other things too. Hmmm. We could do both! There's a thought.

This is Stellios Boutaris, the winery's head, at his Kir-Yianni vineyards in Naoussa, Greece a few years back. Beautiful, impressive, authentic. This is why wine tourism is a thing! #greece #wine #naoussa
