Fascinant ce livre! Elle y parle aussi du #sionisme (elle évoque le #génocide à #gaza). Ce qui me frappe c'est la description de la bascule de #NaomiWolf vers le #conspirationnisme et l' #extrêmedroite car j'y vois un parallèle avec bcp d'autres "célèbrités": de #Dieudonné à #JDVance et tant d'autres dont ces anonymes #radicalisés alors que leur "moi" initial ne présageait pas de cette suite funeste. Les spécialistes l'expliquent surement, je n'ai pas assez lu sur le sujet et vais le creuser.

Naomi Kleins motivatie om Doppelganger. A trip into the mirror world te schrijven was dat zij, door haar beschrijving van de schijnwereld van haar dubbelganger Naomi Wolf, zichzelf scherper ging zien en ook de gevaarlijke systemen die ons allemaal gevangenhouden. Dit artikel geeft een indruk van haar boek.
De eerste keer dat Naomi Klein werd verward met Naomi Wolf was in een openbaar toilet nabij Wall Street op het hoogtepunt van Occupy Wall Street in 2011. Twee vrouwen bespraken een opmerking over Occupy en noemden Naomi Klein, die dit hoorde. Toen zij uit het toilet kwam zei ze: ‘Ik denk dat je het hebt over Naomi Wolf.’
De verwarring nam hierna toe en vooral online. De auteur koos er niet voor om hiertegen te ageren, of om de ‘andere Naomi’ belachelijk te maken. Op bladzijde 27 en 28 schrijft ze dat confrontaties met dubbelgangers vragen oproepen over wie je denkt dat je bent, hoe anderen je zien en de gevolgen daarvan. Het met zorg gemaakte zelf is immers fragiel. Klein verdiepte zich in het verschijnsel dubbelganger in de literatuur en film, en in de wereld van Noami Wolf met wie ze voor Covid veel gemeen had.
Oorlogsdaad
Powerfeministe Naomi Wolf is befaamd dankzij The beauty myth (1990). Zij hopte in de jaren vlak voor Covid van de ene samenzweringstheorie naar de andere, voordat ze zich daarna aan het virus wijdde. Ze beweerde niet dat we hadden te maken met een zeer besmettelijk virus dat van dier op mens overspringt, niet met falende (medische) overheden, niet met een door het neoliberalisme uitgeklede gezondheidszorg en niet met hebzuchtige farmaceutische bedrijven. In plaats hiervan zouden we het slachtoffer zijn van een experiment, van een samenzwering, zelfs van een oorlogsdaad. Deze had tot doel om ons te veranderen in technoslaven en ons ervan te overtuigen om vrijwillig onze rechten in te leveren, terwijl ondertussen een groot deel van de mensheid werd uitgeroeid.
Binnen een jaar na de afkondiging van de pandemie, was Wolf de sleutelfiguur van de netwerken die dit rondbazuinden zij richtte zich onder andere op de vrouwen die van haar een feministe van wereldfaam maakten.
Steve Bannon, de rechts-radicale verkiezingsstrateeg van Donald Trump, nodigde deze andere Naomi geregeld uit als stamgast in zijn podcast War Room: Pandemic. Ze kon hier haar samenzweringsideeën vrijelijk spuien. Marijke Laurense schrijft in De Morgen: ‘Zo zouden zowel Bill Gates als de Chinezen uit zijn op onze slavernij dan wel uitroeiing en zou autisme een gevolg zijn van de mazelenprik. Ook zou je onvruchtbaar worden als je in de buurt komt van iemand die zo onnozel was om zich tegen Covid te laten vaccineren.’ Wolf was ook een van de eersten in de anti-vax scene die masker en vaccinatie in verband bracht met de gele ster die joden in het door nazi’s overheerste Europa moesten dragen en daar bleef de nazi-vergelijkingen niet bij. Op bladzijde 185 e.v. van haar boek gaat Klein hierop uitgebreid in.
Strateeg
Wat had zij te winnen met haar verbond met Bannon en haar nieuwe leven in de Mirror World? Zij kreeg alles wat ze had verloren weer terug: aandacht, respect, geld en macht. Wat viel er anderzijds voor Bannon te halen? ‘Hij had een eindspel voor ogen, waarbij mij duidelijk werd dat mijn dubbelgangster hierin een zeer belangrijke rol moest spelen’, bladzijde 113.
Toen Naomi Klein naar Bannon’s show begon te luisteren, had ze alleen aandacht voor Wolfs bijdragen. Toen ze hem steeds vaker hoorde, begreep ze dat hij een meester is in de Mirror World. Gevaarlijker nog, hij slaagde met zijn vertekende gespiegelde argumenten erin de politieke agenda’s van zijn tegenstanders te ontkrachten. De Democraten spreken bijvoorbeeld van de Big Lie dat Biden het presidentschap zou hebben gestolen van Trump, Bannon sprak over de Big Steal. In de spiegelwereld is er volgens Klein altijd wel een verhaal van een na-aper te vinden die vaak dezelfde trefwoorden gebruikt. Iedere keer dat Trump ergens van werd beschuldigd, sloeg hij terug met de opmerking dat zijn tegenstander schuldig was aan hetzelfde, namelijk corruptie, liegen en buitenlandse samenzwering, maar alleen nog erger. Bannon’s vingerafdrukken waren overal herkenbaar en de strategie was succesvol.
Bannon is eerst en vooral een strateeg. Hij heeft een neus voor onderwerpen die behoren tot het natuurlijke terrein van zijn tegenstanders, vooral als ze die hebben verwaarloosd en daardoor kwetsbaar zijn geworden. Hij slaagde er bijvoorbeeld in om een deel van de mannelijke vakbondsleden, die altijd op de Democraten stemden, weg te kapen en zij zijn Trump nog steeds trouw.
Rotte vruchten
Op bladzijde 230 geeft Klein toe dat ze links is en zich richt op hoe het kapitalisme een ravage aanricht onder bijvoorbeeld onze levende gemeenschappelijke democratische structuren die ons bestaan ondersteunen. Wolf is volgens Klein echter een liberal die vrouwen zoals zijzelf wil bevrijden van discriminatie waardoor ze zich kunnen ontplooien als individuen. Zij geloofde heilig in de liberale meritocratie en was er een sprekend voorbeeld van. ‘Begon ze in de puinhoop van deze ingestorte wereldvisie, zonder iets dat dit verving, een doolhof te zien van samenzweringen en klieken?’ Wolf beweerde zelf dat de Covid-maatregelen haar deden geloven in het bestaan van een duivels kwaad. Jammer genoeg besloot zij niet om haar vertrouwen in het kapitalisme wat te temperen, aldus Klein.
Om te kunnen inzien hoe het allemaal zo gek kon lopen, is het belangrijk om te begrijpen hoe vreemd de situatie eigenlijk al vóór de tijd van Covid was. Het neoliberale tijdperk begon in 1970 en is nog steeds niet afgelopen. Alle tegenspoed en problemen waarmee iemand te maken werden gepathologiseerd als persoonlijk falen, terwijl succes werd geprezen als een bewijs voor de relatieve superioriteit van de veronderstelde selfmade persoon. Nu plukken we de rotte vruchten van tientallen jaren bewust gezaaid wantrouwen, wantrouwen in het idee dat we leden zijn van gemeenschappen en samenlevingen en wantrouwen dat regeringen in staat zijn om iets positiefs voor ons te doen en dat ze dit ook behoren te doen. Naomi Klein citeert Margaret Thatcher die ooit zei: ‘There is no such thing as society.’ Is het dan zo verbazingwekkend dat velen haar geloofden?
Toen Covid plotsklaps toesloeg, werd duidelijk dat we wél een samenleving zijn en werd er een beroep gedaan op solidariteit met de kwetsbaren, aldus de auteur. In niets leek deze omgekeerde wereld op wat het kapitalisme ons zo lang geleerd had. De Covid-protesten richtten zich eerst tegen de symbolen van collectieve actie, zoals bijvoorbeeld vakbonden in Italië en Australië. In de straten werd FREEDOM geroepen, demonstranten verklaarden zichzelf sovereign citizens en niemand kon hen dwingen deel te zijn van de gemeenschap of de samenleving. Wat volgens Naomi Klein wel verbazing wekt en tegelijkertijd hartverwarmend is, is dat een kritieke massa van ons nog genoeg gemeenschapszin over had om mee te gaan met de nieuwe regels. Velen waren blij dat de overheid in ieder geval tijdens de crisis haar sociale gezicht toonde.
Echte samenzweringen
Sommige samenzweringen zijn bewezen echt. ‘If we define ‘conspiracy’ as an agreement among members of a group to pull off some kind of nefarious plot in the shadows, then representatives of capital – in government and the corporate sector – engage in conspiracies as a matter of course’, bladzijde 235. Dit gebeurt in wat zij de Shadowlands noemt. Zo is het een publiek geheim dat de gekozen president van Chili Salvador Allende gewelddadig met steun van de CIA werd afgezet en vermoord, nadat hij de kopermijnen had genationaliseerd. In 1953 werd Iran’s premier Mohammed Mossaddegh door het leger afgezet, gesteund door de CIA en MI6. Dit gebeurde nadat hij de Iraanse olie-industrie, die sinds 1913 onder Britse controle stond, had genationaliseerd. In haar boek The Shock Doctrine, schrijft Klein over andere complotten, waarvan er nog veel meer zijn. Maar anders dan de satanische voorstellingen van QAnon zijn de motieven platvloers, namelijk kapitalistische winstmaximalisatie.
‘Samenzweringstheorici vergissen zich vaak wanneer het om de feiten gaat, maar vaak hebben hun gevoelens gelijk’, stelt Naomi Klein. Het gaat bijvoorbeeld om het gevoel dat de een verdient aan de ellende van een ander en dat er iets wordt verzwegen. Zij citeert de conclusie van de digitaal journalist Marcus Gilroy-Ware: ‘Conspiracy theories are a misfiring of a healthy and justifiable political instinct: suspicion.’ Deze theorieën zijn zowel een symptoom van machteloosheid als instrumenten van verdeeldheid en afleiding, waarvan de elites profiteren.
Links Turkije populariseerde het begrip Deep State waarmee het de realiteit beschreef van een geheim netwerk van militairen en leden van de elite. Bannon en Trump lijfden het begrip echter in om iedere vorm van machtsuitoefening te beschrijven, hetzij economisch, juridisch of journalistiek die een obstakel vormt voor hun ongebreidelde machtsuitoefening. Nooit viel hun iets te verwijten, maar het was altijd de schuld van de ‘deep state’, bladzijde 236.
Conclusie
Naomi Klein volgde haar dubbelganger in de diverse rabbit holes waarin Wolf zich begaf en beschrijft dit op een respectvolle manier. Naarmate zij haar dubbelganger steeds dieper in het holen volgde, begreep ze dat het gemanipuleer van dubbelgangers ons een les leert en dat is dat we niet zoveel van elkaar verschillen als we denken. Niemand maakt zichzelf, maar we maken elkaar en dat is wat Covid ons in de beginfase leerde. Door dit te ontkennen, bloeit de spiegelwereld, waarin sovereign citizens zich schor schreeuwen. Op bladzijde 327 van Doppelganger schrijft Naomi Klein: ‘I have come to embrace the Naomi confusion as an unconventional Buddhist exercise in annihilating the ego. I could never quite get the hang of nonattachment before this, thanks to her, I have.’
