I won! I finally reached 50k in my pirates & barbarians swashbuckling fantasy adventure for #NaNoWriMo - at 2:25am! Here's my reward box which I wisely opened after some sleep! Love the note from my wife & the very appropriate chill-out tea rather than my usual super-dense coffee. And yes, that is a party popper!

Words to Go: -1007Okay, I don't exactly have a lot to add here. I did it! I got through NaNoWriMo 2023 and meant that my early order of a Winner's Shirt wasn't too presuptuous.
Last day tomorrow and a bit of a debrief.

I did it. I finished the first draft my novel (50,000 words) in 29 days as part of the National Novel Writing Month 2023 challenge. This is the fourth time I've done this.

Words to Go: 727The hope was to finish last night but sleep took me a little too quickly. Still! Just three little digits to go and another victory is mine!
One of the benefits of really letting the story breathe this time is it gives me a chance to establish my new characters and find thier voice in a way I've not really been as successful at in my other stories.
Even if it means a near-50,000 word act one.

#NaNoWriMo2023 Day 27: I made it to over 50K words. Are all those words worth saving to wedge into K-Rave? No, not really. Was it beneficial to practice dictation every day? Most definitely. From the Full Hunter’s Moon to the Full Beaver’s Moon I’ve been writing & it felt good.

Words to Go: 2,431The finishing line is in sight! It's kind of wild, because I genuinely wasn't sure this year if I was going to get through it.
The fun fact of the day is that part of the story takes place in a ballet school, but I made the very smart decision to not actually check a ballet school syllabus or do proper research until today.
By complete luck I'm not wrong enough to have to rewrite this part of the plot!

Words to Go: 4,150We're so desperately close, and the crazy thing is I'm still kind of in the first act. 45,000 words on the first third of the story.
It has been important though, as whilst I am very reliant on dialogue so far, much of it is helping me shape my ideas for what will come out of the story as a whole once I completely rewrite it.

I had several bad days in a row where I wasn't able to write--yay string of migraines--but yesterday I managed to get in 5k, so I'm over the 25k threshold now! That puts me a little over 6k behind the expected word count, but the mutiny has happened and people were fed to sharks and I'm excited to discover what happens next. Also, Rayumi is definitely side-character MVP in this book. She's a force to be reckoned with!

Being trapped in a burning building is not suitable for every story. How can you trap your protagonist in an unusual way?

When all else fails, blow stuff up. Doesn't have to be an actual explosion, but something in our characters' lives goes horribly, horribly wrong.

I never do chapter titles, but Dread Pirate Nasri is changing that, maybe? We'll see how long this lasts. But these chapter titles have popped into my head for each, and they are cracking me up.
Also, I hit 20k today, so I am almost caught up after beginning nearly a week late. Almost every day I've been able to write, I've been able to do 3k, so I feel quite fortunate there.

#HowToThing #030 — Procedural, rule-based & stochastic text generation using a custom DSL, parse grammar (via https://thi.ng/parse) and abstract syntax tree transformation (via https://thi.ng/defmulti).
Since it's #NaNoWriMo & #NaNoGenMo [1], I'm closing out this first season of 30 #HowToThing's with a related topic & maybe someone even finds it useful/interesting... 😉🤷♂️
This example is in principle inspired by @galaxykate's oldie & goodie #Tracery, but is using a super simple custom text format instead of JSON to define variables and template text. Variables are expanded recursively and I've also added features like dynamic, indirect pointer-like variable lookups to derive variables based on current values (useful for conditionals & context-specific expansions), hidden assignments, chainable modifiers... I've included 5 different "story" templates (incl. comments) showing various features. Just press "regenerate" to create new random variations...
Similar to the previous #HowToThing, I'm hoping this example also shows that approaching use cases like this via small domain-specific languages with proper grammar rules, does not require much ceremony and is often more amenable to change during prototyping (and later also more maintainable!) than just regex bashing approaches...
The parser grammar itself is explained in the https://thi.ng/parse readme. As usual, the grammar was created/prototyped with the Parser Playground[2], which we developed from scratch during the first thi.ng livestream[3] (2.5h video)...
