  1. 3/ Third favorite cover, or maybe second, by two musicians gone too soon. Nanci Griffith and Townes Van Zandt were friends who sometimes performed together. Townes Van Zandt admired this cover of his song.

  2. 1/ I’ve been wanting to do a thread of favorite song covers. I think this cover of a Bob Dylan song by the late Nanci Griffith might be my favorite. In her studio cover of the song on the ‘Other Voices, Other Rooms’ album Bob Dylan plays harmonica, which he reportedly dubbed in when Griffith sent him tape seeking his approval. But I prefer this live version of the song. #Music #Folk #FolkMusic #CoverSongs #BobDylan #Dylan #NanciGriffith #Spain

  6. Musical Interlude: Dickey Chappelle is a person we need a movie about. A photojournalist and war correspondent, she blazed trails for other women and was noted for her fearlessness in combat situations. She was famous for her uniform of fatigues, harlequin glasses, and pearl earrings, and won the respect of the Marines she was with. She was sadly killed by a land mine in Vietnam, and was given a full Marine funeral. And in recent years, she was named an honorary Marine. I learned of her from this song by Nanci Griffith.

  7. Musical Interlude: Listening to some Nanci Griffith today, I was struck by this song of regretful goodbyes, when breaking up is the best for both parties. One of the more mature breakup songs I've heard.

"Not My Way Home," performed by Nanci Griffith.

  8. Musical Interlude: I listen to this song every October, so I have to post this, although I'm sure I've done it before. Some songs are welcome for repeat visits.

  9. Musical Interlude: OK, here I go on Nanci Griffith again, but I love her music so. I love this catchy tune about missing a place, and people, very much...

  10. Musical Interlude: Late in her career, Nanci Griffith did an album backed by a symphony orchestra. I wasn't wild about it; it was mostly covers of earlier material, and some of the arrangements didn't appeal to me. One track leaped out at me; a new one for her, a cover of a tune by Frank Christian, and with his unique folk/jazz fusion going on. I rather liked it.

  11. Musical Interlude: I hadn't listened to htis album in a long time, and had forgotten how much I liked some of the songs. This is a lovely tune from Nanci Griffith's first album.

  12. Musical Interlude: This song is always a good one for October, and given that I'm opening windows after a long spell of rainy weather, it's doubly significant.

  13. Musical Interlude: "Storms" was the first Nanci Griffith album I ever bought, and this opens the album. A quiet song of heartbreak, but with a delicacy rarely found. And that line about how "love has a voice of its own" can mean so much.

"I Don't Want to Talk About Love," performed by Nanci Griffith.

  14. Musical Interlude: I may have posted this before, but it's on my mind. I caught the Bette Midler version randomly today; Nanci's version is a big favorite with my sister and I, and we taught it to our parents during a long car trip. Now Mom tells me that any time she hears it on the car radio, she'll pull over and sit and reminisce. Nice to have a song that's a family favorite.

  15. Musical Interlude: Thinking of Nanci Griffith today, who I shall probably miss for the rest of my life. Here's a feisty song from her, written by Lyle Lovett.
