  1. 🔍 A short investigation and a preview of our method: how we baited dumb scammers, who acted as their own registrar, into revealing a pattern that became hard proof.

  2. The Price of Truth: How NameSilo Protects a $20M+ Scammer

An article about a $20M+ fraud and NameSilo’s retaliation against those exposing it. Instead of taking action, NameSilo chose to protect the scammer—or perhaps their own involvement.

If losing our Twitter is the price for the truth, so be it.

  3. The pinterest error is being returned by the #NameSilo API call and 15 min after manually renewing the domain there the order is still "Processing" 🙄 .

  4. We have found a solution together with @as9136 that will likely provide sufficient protection for IPv4 users, and we have a good idea how a long-term setup can look like (but it will take a while to get there). Thanks a lot for all the networking and support!

The switch is awaiting DNS propagation (pending for > 30 minutes already, and might take another hour for some users. And indeed, we are not happy with the service quality of #namesilo).

  5. 🤗 Learn from my mistakes:

Yesterday, I rushed into purchasing a MyPrepaidCenter Prepaid Card (MasterCard) without realizing that MyPrepaidCenter was the provider. My haste caused me to overlook important details.

Later, I attempted to use the card on Namesilo, which resulted in my account being temporarily disabled. Thankfully, Namesilo quickly reinstated my account after I contacted them and explained the issue.

Subsequently, I tried to buy a domain from Porkbun, but the card was not accepted by Stripe.

I later discovered on Reddit that MyPrepaidCenter's fraud detection system is overly sensitive and often doesn't work reliably. The workaround, as many users have suggested, is to purchase Amazon gift cards with MyPrepaidCenter prepaid cards.

Fortunately, my card had a balance of only $5, and Namesilo understood the situation, reinstating my account promptly. Otherwise, I could have lost $20 and access to our Pixelfed instance, NixOrigin's domain (nixorigin.one), which could have seriously damaged my reputation.

Learn from my mistakes, and please be cautious when dealing with prepaid cards from providers like MyPrepaidCenter. Share this information within the fediverse communities to help others avoid similar issues.

  7. @whiskeyputers @bill @ScottMortimer If you plan to use whois masking, then the bad choices would be #Cloudflare sites (#gandi, #godaddy, #namecheap, #namesilo, #registerDotCom) because CF sees your unmasked whois info. Some non-CF options are: #TransIP, #porkbun & njal.la. Exceptionally, some of the CFd ones I mentioned only use CF DNS, thus they can spontaneously switch CF on at any time (e.g. during peak usage).

  8. @peterbabic #Email is extremely unreliable as it is without forwarding. Then you add domain registrar forwarding into the mix & it brings in more points of failure for ham loss. And the ham loss is very difficult to detect and diagnose (lots of finger pointing between the different suppliers). Perhaps that problem is unique to #Namesilo but something to watch out for.

  9. @peterbabic Not sure if this is widespread but there’s a nasty problem w/forwarding using namesilo, for example: #Namesilo (NS) will not blindly forward all msgs b/c NS worries about their own IP reputation. So NS has set up a very defensive server which causes legit emails to be refused or blackholed. NS gives less of a shit about lost legit msgs than about its own IP reputation.
