  1. Washtenaw ARPSC weekly net in progress. This starts at 830p but really starts a few minutes early with a pre net check-in. #W8SRC is net control tonight.

My 2m antenna tonight is a Signal Stick on a mag mount on a metal patio chair. This was good enough to get into the #N8DUY repeater which I usually can't hit with just the HT antenna.

Simplex net followed, 7 station on frequency, net control has a weak location tonight so #KB8AY was relay. I could hear relay plus two other nearby stations.

  2. Rain fade on the #N8DUY 145.15- weekday morning roundtable in Ann Arbor MI. A lot of sizzle on the signal, challenging conditions in general. The repeater has very good wide area coverage and people were getting in from the northern Detroit suburbs as usual.

Thanks to Jim #W8STX for running the net, and to the taxpayers of Washtenaw County for supporting emergency management; the N8DUY repeater is also used for the ARPSC public service corps net, SKYWARN, et al.

  3. Washtenaw County #skywarn net activated, "standby net" for a severe thunderstorm warning issued around 800p local time. No storm reports yet. #N8DUY 145.15- repeater is being used as usual for the net.

  4. Ham Radio Challenge Week 17 - find your closest repeater.

Closest is a semi-private low power AllStarLink node on UHF a few blocks away, two VHF repeaters (#W8RP and #W8UM) with active nets, and the odd UHF to 10 meter band repeater also #W8UM .

Line of sight if you are up high enough are a UHF and a VHF repeater on a county tower, the VHF (#N8DUY) can be heard in a 10-county area plus parts of Canada.

A good guide is from #W8SRC

  5. Up early so I should be able to make the 0800 #N8DUY weekday morning roundtable on 2 meters. 145.15- PL100 in Ann Arbor, the repeater has very wide coverage over SE Michigan.

The plan is to bicycle into town, then go up to the top of the parking structure that is next door to the coworking space I belong to, and operate from there.

Previously in parking structures on the air, my notes from 2014

  6. Getting ready for the 0800 weekday morning roundtable net on #N8DUY 145.15- Ann Arbor. This repeater has wide area coverage all the way to Windsor Ontario, Detroit MI, Toledo OH, and points north and west.

Nothing special to report on local #VHF propagation at vhf.dxview.org but sunrise isn't for a few minutes and often DX participants are affected by sunrise or so it seems.

  7. After way too many weeks away, I checked into this morning's 800a weekday morning roundtable on the Ann Arbor #N8DUY repeater, organized by Jim #W8STX .

This is the net that I check into bicycle portable when the weather and the season allows, and I've also operated from the top of parking structures in town.

Not today though. I have a Kenwood TK-790 rig (ex-BNSF railroad radio) that @w8tam fixed up for ham use. Notes from a year ago from when I hauled it to the park.

  8. My bicycle mobile companion on my way from downtown Ann Arbor to the siren test in Ann Arbor Township was KEC-63, the National Weather Service weather station.

Station KEC-63 broadcasts on a frequency of 162.550 MHz from a transmitter located in Southfield, Michigan.

Warnings and Forecasts: Livingston, Oakland, Macomb, St. Clair, Washtenaw, Wayne, Lenawee, and Monroe

Tune it in, crank it up loud, throw the HT in my saddle bag and go.

The other HT was tuned to the siren test net on #N8DUY

  9. Successfully worked the Washtenaw County Michigan siren test net bicycle mobile. I took the Stein Road siren which is adjacent to the Barton Hills County Club. Next time I will go to the same siren as a companion of someone in the club and do the test from the fairway.

Siren is at grid EN82ch78XW in Ann Arbor Township, #N8DUY #skywarn repeater is in Scio Township at I-94 and M-14

Signal reports were "good, strong signal" from my HT.

  10. Listened to the weekday morning roundtable on the #N8DUY repeater this morning. It's been a while since I've checked in, still nice to hear familiar voices.

  11. Monthly siren test report for April for Washtenaw County (excluding Ann Arbor, which has its own separate set of sirens)

    15 listeners
2 sirens not sounding at all
1 siren needing maintenance (grinding sounds from gearbox)

The net ran about 30 minutes + the 15 minutes each way to get to the siren I was assigned to. Mine was fine (good loud sound, it rotated just fine, no need for maintenance).

Thanks to #N8DUY for the use of the repeater.

  12. Weekday morning roundtable, on the #N8DUY repeater, take it from the shack with my new #Quansheng HT + #Nagoya antenna repurposed from and old Baofeng. Signal report was "stellar".

It helps a lot that the #Egzumer firmware has an S meter reading which ranged from S9+10 to S6 with audible noise on receive depending on exactly where I was standing.

I still do want an outdoor antenna for 2 meters.

  13. Headed out to Burns Park AA-023 this morning to work the weekly morning roundtable on #N8DUY 145.15- , with Jim #W8STX net control.

It was windy and I had a lot of wind noise on my mic until I got under the shelter. I hung up my #N9TAX roll-up J-pole, connected it to my #Quansheng HT, with good reception reports.

A strap to put around a tree so that I can hang the J-pole from it would be a useful addition to the kit.

It was a bunch of fun!

Eventually I want to operate HF from the local parks, but first steps first and get familiar with what's possible on 2 meters. There is a net on #N8DUY every weekday morning which gives me a chance to practice frequently on my way in to work, and the net is used to my difficult-to-copy signals when I'm out and about.

  15. Bicycle portable from Allmendinger Park AA-001 in Ann Arbor

#N9TAX roll-up J-pole antenna attached to a play structure, signal report is "full quieting" at 5 watts into the #N8DUY repeater.

  16. Call up for the siren test net on #N8DUY 145.15- for the Washtenaw County Michigan emergency warning sirens. Sirens will activate throughout the county (except for the city of Ann Arbor) at noon.

This is the #skywarn repeater here.

Coincidentally there is also a University of Michigan football game starting at noon, with a planned overflight of some high performance aircraft.

  17. Siren test net complete (from 1209).

We had a storm come through recently and one siren did not sound, as though it had no power, noted by #KB8AY .

#AC8YA net control on the #N8DUY repeater.

  18. Washtenaw County siren test net in progress, monitoring #N8DUY repeater 145.15- Ann Arbor, activation noon on first Saturday of the month (approximately now).

  19. Q1. Where are you checking in from and, if you have your license, what was your most recent contact?

A1. Ann Arbor, MI, grid EN82dg.

Most recent contact this morning on a morning roundtable net, pedestrian mobile on 2 meters via #N8DUY , with Jim #W8STX as net control. Band conditions fair in the early morning, there is interference when the band is long.

W8STX is there every day, keeps a log that he posts monthly, and generally directs traffic on the net. Thanks Jim!

  20. The closest I get to #SOTA operations is "Magic Mountain", a little hill (a pile of dirt) in Burns Park in Ann Arbor that the kids use for sledding., Took the morning roundtable on #N8DUY from there and got good reception reports. 2 meters was long and we had someone (sorry no call handy) checking in from 50 miles airline to the northwest.

  21. Had a good time at the Chelsea (Michigan) ham radio swap. Met some regulars on my 2 meter morning net on the #N8DUY repeater who I had not previously seen in person, and picked up a #Kenwood #TK790 from Thom @w8tam which he has already fixed up for ham radio use.

The Chelsea swap was also a "Vintage Electronics Expo", so there was also a lot of 1960s-1990s gear of various sorts there.

Next swap: Monroe (MI) Hamfest and Computer Show, on Fathers Day 2023-06-18.

  22. More 2 meter band opening let us listen to #KB8EOC (the "Tiffin repeater") here in Ann Arbor until about 810a local time, and then that interference on 145.15- #N8DUY disappeared on our morning roundtable.

Some question about the impact of wildfires on VHF propagation.

    #vhfdx

  23. The "Tiffin repeater" is Bascom, OH, Seneca County, #KB8EOC . 145.15- with a 107.2 PL

    Listening now on #Broadcastify

    broadcastify.com/listen/feed/2

Bob #WD8PIC is about half way between this repeater and Ann Arbor's #N8DUY and he can check in to both depending on how he sets PL.

    fun with #vhfdx

  24. 2 meters is long from Michigan to Ohio again this morning - characteristic mixing on the input on the Ann Arbor #N8DUY repeater, and tx from what we call the "Tiffin repeater" was clear and copyable from here in Ann Arbor.

    VHF propagation map aprs.mennolink.org/map

8am net on #N8DUY had an early bird edition that was fine, but by 0815 we were having troubles.

I did not catch any call signs from "Tiffin". Time to program the HT to see if I can open up that machine from here.

  25. I heard 2/16 stations on the Wayne County (MI) Repeater Crawl tonight. As expected #N8DUY came in S5/9++ and I could hear #W8FSA . The rest, not so much. Keith #KD8ZSK NCS.

On the plus side my entire 50W station now fits in my backpack. On the minus side, I need to get some more/better 2m portable antenna options to make it actually useful.

The #N8DUY repeater was reachable full quieting from 50+ miles away (west side of Ann Arbor MI to Essex Ontario). Thanks to Sean #VA3SGM for that report.
