  1. Hm. I've started using @mullvadnet browser on my work laptop (without VPN - our workplace makes us use theirs). However, I also have to use things like Google Workplace, Zoom and Teams for work emails, document sharing, calls, etc.

Zoom and Teams links don't open in Mullvad, though - am I stuck, then?

(I can't seem to get the browser to allow meeting links to open the software.)

  2. I installed termux on my Android tablet and started installing stuff I have zero idea about, but it made the terminal look cool so I'm down with it. 😎

I think this is the kind of stuff Mondays are made for.

Edit 1: I installed git. Do I want to use the ssh-agent, whatever it is? #n00b

Edit 2: Nevermind. I installed whatever it suggested I install and nothing exploded. So far.

Basically just posted this so i can click on the hastags to follow them. I have no idea how to do that elsewhere x3

  4. Par contre, je viens de me faire recaler sur le site de réservation des Archives nationales ayant apparemment demandé un document numérisé. Je suis encore loin de maitriser les archives des notaires de Paris 😅 #n00b #Archives

  5. :alert: MAJOR Plot twist! :FireDumpster:

I'm sure you're having a better morning than me because I was greeted with an email from #OVH (the VPS provider) that started with "Hello Mr. Rossini" and informed me that the VPS was stopped because they suspected a hack - and it will be permanently deleted. "Now let us know Mr. Rossini if you'd like to purchase a new VPS plan."

30 Euros* for 4 hours of VPS experimentation with Docker! YAY (not!)

(*30 Euros corresponded to a 6-month plan, sigh)

I received ZERO advanced warnings... #OVHCloud simply deleted my VPS because of "unusual activity" and proposed I buy a new one.

I had installed #Fail2Ban on it first thing yesterday morning, but I suppose changing 0.0.0.0 with my VPS's IP4 address in one of the Docker settings... to connect it to Docker GUI did it for me.

    You live, you learn.

I will stay away from OVH Cloud.

(Yes I had tried creating an account with Hetzer and NetCup before but they had a convoluted signup process and wanted too much personal info/docs, so I had given up and turned to OVH. My bad).

    What will I do now?

    Find a new VPS provider.

Feeling salty about the 30 Euros I spent for 6 months with OVH but honestly I feel like I dodged a bullet. I had nothing installed on the VPS, except for Fail2Ban and basic Docker. Imagine how catastrophic it would have been if they had deleted my VPS without warning if I had important stuff on it! Shivering at the thought.

Onwards and upwards, more humble than ever, with infinite respect for sysadmins 🙏

  6. Could someone advise how I can browse other instances? I would enjoy a larger content feed. #n00b

  7. So far, so good...
I've done this course before, but so long ago, that I need a full refresher!
We have a Player (Green), some falling blocks, and a Coin to collect!

The problem now is that I *know* I will be falling into some n00b-traps, so any advice on Good Practice would be appreciated.

  8. I had found it weird the wireless headphones were not recharging while I was away from the desk. All month. This morning I saw the dock for them light up when I plugged in the laptop to it's dock. I realized the headphone dock needed to get plugged into the power strip. #n00b

  10. Sometimes I feel really #n00b ...
A couple of day ago the #touchpad on my #slimbook #kde edition stopped working. I restarted, looked at #dmesg, searched the device in #lsusb, but found no clue... I just used a #mouse waiting to have time for a deeper troubleshooting.
Today, I noticed the trackpad was working perfectly before login 🤔

...it was disabled in the settings 🤦

  14. @adastra1930 good advice! #hybrid setups provide #fault_tolerance too. If the cloud provider goes down, or trunk connections are cut, or there's a massive public #DNS outage, or even a large-scale power outage - you can still have #authentication services, and some #connectivity with internally hosted sites and services. Plus, managing an on-prem Domain Controller gives we #sysadmins the control on routes and content delivery for our users and devices, and we can pivot quickly to recover services should the Internets take a massive shit. Of course, there are limits to what can be done today without some #cloud services in place, or even #electricity, but that's not the point here.

There are fewer and fewer of us anymore that actually know how to spec and build out a #physical_server for a target environment, let alone how to make it play well with clouds. And don't get me started on #n00b tech people's lack of understanding on how the #Internet actually functions. It's a lost art form anymore lol.

I still believe A+, and Networking Fundamentals (Level 1 & 2) courses should be required learning for anyone in computer science. Part of passing those courses should be building a PC, building a Server, and building a Network, from scratch. Then break/fix/break/fix until you "get it." We also need more #support for #n00bs landing #industry jobs with quality #leaders who actually #mentor them, making them better than they could be. Teaching these now older concepts of "on-prem" setups and the like.

Now, if I could just get my CEO to release the purse strings a bit, I could continue doing my part. But that's a whole other discussion lol.

  19. Pretty pretty please, can someone start (or help me find learning resources to organize) manpages/docs/forums/feeds/wikis/whatever for a #fediverse #n00b / #newbie re: differing federated services - #mastodon #pixelfed #peertube #loops #lemmy etc? Example: do I need to join multiple instances? Can I cross-populate posts in my other feeds?
    Pls where can I #rtfm or facilitate/volunteer for searchable Q&A-sharing forums??? #explaintomelikeiam5 #explaintomelikeim5 #tellmewheretogo #FediverseTips

  20. Well. I did something very stupid. I had an Economy Plus window seat but someone grabbed my middle. So late last night I picked a seat further back in an empty row.

Now I have an occupied middle AND lost my extra legroom. What a dummy! Of course it’s the longest flight of the trip. SMH

  21. This feels like a dumb question, but I've looked through a few "getting started with Mastodon" resources without finding an answer, so...

Does anyone know the syntax construct hyperlinked text in a Mastodon post? I.e. instead of text reading "Bridge Day (bridgedayrappel.com/)" I want to just have "Bridge Day" and have that text be hyperlinked to bridgedayrappel.com/ ...

  25. @mpjgregoire

This is exactly what I have been waiting / hoping for (well, I want them to have their own servers and broadcast to threads, etc. but closer!)
But I don't get it? When I click on those links I go to threads and if I follow it will follow from my Threads account.
I cant find their accounts from search on this side either.

So, how do I follow here?
