This evening we'll light 8 candels in our Hanukkah Mennora's.

On this occasion I've decided to highlight the 8 books that made an impression on me in the past year.

1. Emissaries from the Dead by Adam-Troy Castro

Adam-Troy Castro is such a catchy name, I was sure I've read somehting by him before, but apparently this was by firs Adam-Troy Castro novel.

Emissaries from the Dead is a novel about the interaction between humanity and a god like AI taking place on a cylindrical space station / artificial world.

In places it echoes John Varley's, Titan.

It is an engaging murder investigation and no one is entirely innocent.

But ultimately it is a study of free will in an unjust universe.

This is a thing I’ve done for a while on Facebook, and it seems to fit better here, so I should give the backstory.

I had a friend, Steve Davies aka Spartacus Mills, self-styled ‘Britain’s laziest #surrealist’ (there was stiff competition). We never met irl, but he was a scabrous, provocative, delightful and hilarious presence online.

Sparty would post a list of the books he’d read each year. This hadn’t occurred to me, but watching him do it made it looked kind of fun. Plus, there was always the interest in crossover in our reading, and thinking about books I’d read he might like. So I started to keep a list one year, looking forward to sharing it with him.

And Sparty died. It was a terrible, stupid accident while he was out walking with his beloved dog, and even though we never met I still feel that ache of his absence. So I did a list that year, and decided to carry on doing it.

The last few hours of 2022 are drawing to a close, so I think my “Year in Books” list is complete. I managed to read 111 books! Nearly 42,000 pages (though the vast majority were audiobooks - that’s my secret trick for success).

Pro tip: get a library card and borrow eBooks and audiobooks from the library for FREE. If you’re new to audiobooks, they’re perfect for commuting or mindless household chores. Start with books you know or have seen the movie because you may need to train your brain to listen. Reading a familiar book means you don’t need to focus on the plot and you won’t get lost if you space out for a bit. Also, adjust the reading speed! It can be slowed down or sped up to suit your preferences.

Here are a few of the 111 titles that stood out to me this year. In no particular order:

I read 52 books in 2022. Twice the goal I set myself. Quite a varied list and a mixture of long and short. I'm going to aim for the same number next year, but perhaps with more non-fiction in the mix. I started a number of non-fiction books this year then didn't complete them. Gotta get better.
