It's true. XHS's algorithm learns super fast. I've been there less than a week and today it figured out I truly want a Lotus Tower DIY kit. Can I afford it? Nope, but just look at it!

Someone please tell me there’s a #MysteriousLotusCasebook fanvid to Teenage Dirtbag by Weezer! (Fang Duobing is the singer, Li Lianhua is the girl, Di Feisheng is the boyfriend—obviously.)

Ok, time to say good bye to Mysterious Lotus Casebook, but I did one last gif hunt - and I will use this one at the drop of a hat!

If I was the guy in green screen pajama in the background I 100% would answer the question
"So, what's your job at Heng Dian World Studios?"
with
"I can't say too much, but I'm pulling the strings around there."

BTS fotage from China and Korea is a culture shock for me. What I want is interesting semi-documentaries of how the drama was made*, what C- and K drama serves are plopping sound effects, cutsie decals, and humorous pointers. Ah well - who am I to rearrange someone elses living room? Haven't seen these before, so I'll better get used to it.
(*Granted, it's not always good documentaries for Western movies etc - but sometimes you get lucky.)

Oh, not me downloading the funniest Mysterious Lotus Casebook gifs from tumblr... (Small selection in next toot)

Now _that_ is a guan! The designer is stretching the limits here - the piece is jiggling dangeroisly when Not-Ye Baiyi is moving. But I guess they took the risk because it's such a perfect illustration of the character's high flying thoughts about himself. Of _course_ he'll miracuosly succeed this time.

Mysterious Stardew Valley Casebook strikes again.

Stumbled upon one of those 'what would the combination of your latest tv show and game be?' and ended up with
Mysterious Stardew Valley CasebookAt least there's _one_ character who'd like it...

Someone help me out! Is Fang Duobing/Xiaobao actually named Fang Lotsa' illness/Little bun? (I'm way too groggy to look at Chinese characters rn.)

Yes! A good exemple of how to build depth _and_ dramatic tension! Li Lianhua and madame are both looking at Shan Gudao's closed fist. The fist and their eyes are on a straight line sloping downwards. Since Li is in sharp focus your eyes are drawn to him, and then you follow his gaze to madam (slightly blurry) catch up on _her_ gaze and then follow it to the fist. Shan being 'cut off' and blurry gives the depth (as do the blurry background).

The supreme robe of Nanyin live up to its name! The costume designer has taken the chance to go truly bonkers! In a good way, that is. Purple gold brocade? Yes. Gold embroideries? Yes. A belt that rules a small nation? Yes. Gold embroideries on the gold embroideries? Yes, yes, and yes.
And, hehe, it looks like I hit pause at just the right moment.

I have no idea what Guillermo del Toro is watching in his free time, but I think Mysterious Lotus Casebook would be to his liking; it has Cogwheels. True, he toned it down somewhere after Hellboy II, but I'm kinda' with him and CDrama in this. A good cogwheel sequence improves things!

CW: Spoilerish (Character design, Mysterious Lotus Casebook)
I'm not sure if this is a CDrama thing or if it's a ChengYi thing, but here he plays being blind - and he's swivelling his eyes and body like a real blind person do. This is the first actor I've seen do this. I've spent decades watching actors staring straight ahead and not react to moving items, without realising the blind people I've talked to irl don't move that way!
-
Everyone, save for master He and minister Fang*, gets an earful from Fang Doubing if he thinks they need it - filiality be damned! This goes double for Li Lianhua who's gotten about five times more than anyone else. This is why I pointed out (long ago) that Fang actually is a filial person - despite being the call out king of the drama he moves within those parameters.
(*Fang Doubing's actual parents)
-
Fang Doubing is missing out when he refuses to marry the princess. Zhaoling is badass enough to steal that red beaker thingy from Saintress Jiao - she'd be an incredibly good jianghu wife.
(Eye contact in first pic, edit: second pic - from an earlier episode - for proof)

I'm not so sure about those circular saw antennae, but overall that's a good design for a tank. The shape means it's near impossible to tilt over, and the dome means incomming force "slides off". I wonder if it has actual equivalents in Chinese history? If this was Western fiction I'd say someone's been playing too much rpg, but here there's a 50 - 50 chance.
-
I wonder if they had to do a very late change of actors for Zhan's (the man's) role. His clothes look like they're made for a bulkier person, not like it's a planned lose-fit. For some reason this is also where the clothes department ran out of money. Master He's sister to the left wears sturdy fabric with structure, Zhan wears flimsy cotton with prints. The designer still managed to make something impressive. A+

CW: Spoilerish (Mysterious Lotus Casebook)
Oh. Just an appreciation toot of Cheng Yi's acting. He doesn't move his face much, but this is still a look that would make me go

CW: Spoiler (Mysterious Lotus Casebook)
Only took her ten years to realise that Di Feisheng won't budge. It's tempting to say 'because he's gay', but by the look of it Di's neither gay nor bisexual. He's not even ace. If anything he's staunchly Li-Xiangyi-fightual.

Someone borrowed some straw pleats from Word of Honor, I see! I don't know who, because MyDramaList did not list the costume designer, but whoever it is they deserves a price! The costumes of MLC are definitely in my top favourites (together with Word of Honor and White Cat Legend)!

One of those rare moments when we can see that people wear pants under their coats. Wuxia is not a perfect source for historical clothing by any stretch, but afaik the pants are not a modern addition for convenience. People did wear them. If you've ever experienced chafing a hot summer day you'll probably agree it's a good idea.
-
Master He reminds me a lot about Lwaxanna Troi; wild, overbearing personality, speaks over her child more often than not, 100% sure of her own competence, because she actually is extremely competent. But even when she kinda' don't, she still respects Fang Doubing's decision to roam jianghu. She rolls up, mauls him with mothering about taking over the family business, and then lets him leave. Given it's an wuxia she could...

OMG! Cdrama pulls _no_ punches! I won't spoil what's been said, but I can assure you Fang Doubing is sitting opposite Li Lianhua _praying_ for embarrassing baby pictures to be invented, so his mom can rob him of his dignity in a less cringy way.
-
Detective or not, Fang Doubing is being mothered in broad daylight!
Also, that hairdo is really something! You can see babyhair at her neck, meaning it's her own hair plus a massive amount of false dito woven together. They have basically taken an assembled hairdo and clipped it to her head. Some of the decorations are hiding the connection points. Props to the actress for carrying that weight while acting!

The reason I comment so much on costuming is I'm impressed of the variation the costumers manage to cram out of fairly simple clothes. Here three out of four people dressed in blue, but using different values they can still get a distinct difference between them. There's even a difference in how well pressed the fabrics are.
And, as usual, Li Lianhua's comfy bathrobe game is Strong.

CW: Death (Mysterious Lotus Casebook)
I mean... most people die after being decapitated. What they mean is that the dead person wasn't killed by other means and _then_ lost its head. But now I have the unfortunate mental image of someone beheaded running around like a headless chicken. Having a rich imagination isn't always a blessing.
Edit: they actually meant death _then_ decapitation - I blame a translation error
-
Yes. Yes, I am watching Mysterious Lotus Casebook, but _someone_ decided she needed a pillow more than I need writing toots.

Managing one's personal hygiene comes with its own problems in wuxia land. Like the small army randomly showing up to kill you.
-
I can see one reason why Li Lianhua's clothes often look so comfy. The shoulder to sleeve seam on his top coat is down by his elbow, meaning the body of the piece is extremely wide. He's wearing the hanfu version of an oversized hoodie.
And a partyguan. It's not the bamboo twig anymore. I think it's still plantstuff, but it's skillfully woven into a decorative basket.
-
Through the drama these horses stay shackled to the Lotus Tower, even when it's parked for longer periods. It's an easy storytelling mistake to make if you're used to motors, so here's my rules of thumb for writing horses
•horses are always characters - on the same level as dogs
•horses need food, water, + rest, so add scenes for this (ie Li need a makeshift enclosure + a roof for them)
•cram as much drama as possible out of those scenes -
Ok, there's a slight similarity between Mysterious Lotus Casebook and Dante's Divine Comedy. That is; the evil parts are the most fun ones. Production definitely brings it up a notch around Di Feisheng at his home clan. The camera angles goes from good to Neat!, and look at that set! They really nail pompous, overly decorated dictator style!
-
Li Lianhua says he built the Lotus Tower out of a wrecked boat, and that's apparently one of the rare times he tells the truth, because production has put nautical details here and there. Like those block and tackles hanging in the background. I'm a bit bothered by the facts this is the first time I see them*, but it's a nice touch!
(*is it a me problem or did production randomly throw them in)
-
Ignore the characters, they're just doing evil stuff anyway. Look at those glorious candelabra!!! To DIY one of those I'll probably some heavy duty wire... Maybe I could ~borrow a piece of electrical cable and str...
*realises this is an actual crime*
_Not_ borrow cables, that is. But I want to create those arms without having to learn blacksmithing. If I combine coathanger wire and...

We don't get much of the story around this character, and what we get is almost completely told through his costumes. In flashbacks he wears white well fitted hanfu with gold details. In the 'now' his clothes are baggier, and have large patches that look worn to the threads. I may be on thin ice since the technique making those patches could be expensive, but it looks like the fall of the Sigu sect hit him extra hard.

I'm intrigued by that cabinet in the background! I kinda' want to build it - it looks extremely buildable and very suitable for a cardboard furniture project. OTH it reminds me of those radio cupboards from the time when radios where gigantic, and that style I don't like. I think it's the orange vase in the display box down right that triggers it. Does it do that for you too?

White clothes are not uncommon in Mysterious Lotus Casebook, and the characters wear them for all sorts of reasons. But if you're not Asian there are a few scenes where you probably should imagine the character in black to get the full impact*. One is when Li Lianhua sits beside his shifu's grave, and this one where Fang Doubing learns some sad facts about his family.
(*see toot below)
-
Has anyone written a crossover fanfic for Mysterious Lotus Casebook and Living Big In A Tiny Home yet*? I know it's not entirely ok to include real persons, but having Bryce go
"It's so important to have good ventilation when you're cooking indoors, isn't it? And you have quite a lot of storage too!"
as Li Lianhua lies through his teeth, Fang and Guan are wideeyed helpful, and Di Feisheng glares daggers would be so fun!(*I don't have time)
-
While it is within realistic proportions Li Xiangyi still wears a monstrous guan. Li Lianhua, on the other hand, usually winds a twig around his topknot. One of those small details that says a lot about the character.

Production: Huhuhu! We put Li Lianhua in a wedding dress!
Ooodles of fans; What if... it was real though 👀
Production: Adding angelic singing to the scene would certainly add to the _humorous_ note.
Fans *sweating buckets of hormones*: OMG It _is_ real!
(In short: fandoms are adorable and need to be protected at all cost.)

Hm. I just noticed Di Feisheng's mask covers his left-hand side of his face, whereas Li Lianhua's (not in pic) covers Li's right-hand side. Took me a while, since Di's is made out of leather (cuir bouilli I think) and Li's is ornate silver. Anyway, the amount of fan fic this moment alone have launched must be epic!
-
One of Mysterious Lotus Casebook's strengths is in the acting - which is hard to catch in a still. But here I have a good sample. Let me translate for you
Di Feisheng: Oh, you little _bitch_!
Li Lianhua: And I'm going to keep on being a bitch until I get what I want, you big ass!
(This is a scene of the kind that can send actors into laughing hysterics if the tension overloads. I'm actually impressed they keep composure.)
-
There are Multiple Problems with living in wuxia land, but so help me; I want to live in that house with that courtyard! Imagine sitting by the pond, watching the little fishies (there are always fishes) and the occasional beheaded corpse float by!
-
The Lotus Tower _really_ is something! This is the roof where we have a pavillion with a bed for hot weather sleeping, ginseng drying (those bushy things up in the upper left corner), and a friggin' stone mill (down right)! Li Lianhua may be a bad chef, but he's got building and making down pat!
-
I know it's not considered, hm, ~stylish to show off a prop at any given chance, but I'm willing to give production a pass here. While the interior scenes are shot in rooms too big to fit into this wagon, it's still an actual rolling two story house. They've also gone all out on the details; note the net hammock for storage, the large grow box under the window to the right of the entrance, and the little dog house on the bridge.
-
Li Lianhua is asking the right question in so many ways. "The other children" are the losers of a competition of sorts. And I kinda' wish more fantasy stories (globaly) would ask what happens to the others when a high stakes magical tournament opens and only one is to be left standing.
