  1. Mysore Literature Festival is happening this weekend. Grateful to the organisers for not having changed its name to Mysore International Literature Festival. (I overheard some folks wanting that, last year.) Delhi, on the other hand, needs an international literature festival.

  5. When I moved to Mysore, I was chuffed to find this street. (It's name is misspelt on Google Maps.)

    Attaching my favourite Rubá'í.

  7. Just arrived in #Rajasthan, starting with #Udaipur, the famous City of Lakes. And I have to say, I liked it more than I expected

It’s not just the lakes and the surrounding hills, or even the old town

There’s something about the whole setting that makes it a really enjoyable place to explore

But the highlight is the City Palace, massive, one of the biggest in #India (up there with #Mysore). Endless rooms, intricate details, and some great views over the lake.

  9. If you are in #Mysore on April 7, this is a really cool talk to attend in a really cool campus. I have visited some of these temples and got a demonstration of the #astronomy and time-keeping architecture and apparatus.

  11. After visiting #Mysore, I took a night bus to #Hampi… and I have to say, it turned out to be one of my favorite places in #India, maybe the favorite.

Hampi feels like an open-air museum. Ruins, temples, and ancient structures are scattered everywhere.

There’s a calmness in Hampi that’s hard to explain. It’s quiet, spacious and somehow deeply immersive, you really feel the history around you.

  12. From #Kochi, I took a night bus to #Mysore

Woke up in a completely different vibe—less tropical, more inland #India

Mysore is where I saw my first proper Indian palace… and wow. The Mysore Palace is easily one of the most impressive in the country.

The architecture is stunning, and the interior halls are just as impressive, detailed ceilings, massive rooms, and that royal feeling everywhere.

  13. #PolyglotDiaries I was bewildered to see a paneer (cottage cheese) favoured soda in Mysore until the penny dropped that the label might be a bad transliteration of panneeru (meaning rose water in Kannada).

  17. #Mysore folks, I'd attend this if I were in town. An officer retired from the foreign intelligence agency of the Indian government (the Research and Analysis Wing or RAW) is reviewing a new spy movie.

  19. Much of #Pune has lost its original, conceited character. #Mysore still retains it.

  20. Typewriters are still around on Mumbai's sidewalks, outside big government offices. Affidavits, stamp papers and notaries. If you come to Mysore, I'll show you the street where to find them. #Mumbai #Mysore #travel #typewriters

  23. OTOH, #Mysore has been experiencing an influx of North Indian migrants who don't want to assimilate, like those in #Bengaluru. I pointedly speak in Kannada when I am around them and pretend that I don't know any Hindi.

  24. Language and dialects:

Here on the coast, they speak Tulu by default and a different dialect of #Kannada than what's spoken in Mysuru-Bengaluru. I wasn't expecting it to be so difficult. youtube.com/shorts/CMNfBYFjEG4

  26. If you are in #Mysore, TM Krishna is performing today evening at 8th Cross Ganesha pandal & tomorrow (September 19 evening) at the Wadiyar Centre for Architecture (WCFA) Courtyard. He performs at the Ganesh pandal every year. Mysore is the place where you see absolute legends perform on the street.

  29. Thread: I watched a #Kannada adaptation of Sarah Treem's play "The How and The Why" many years ago at the #Mysore Science Theatre Festival. It blew my mind. I recommend attending this festival.

  30. I watched a #Kannada adaptation of Sarah Treem's play "The How and The Why" many years ago at the #Mysore Science Theatre Festival. It blew my mind. It's a meeting between two women biologists: one older and well-known for her work on the grandmother hypothesis, and the other a younger scientist with a radical new theory about human menstruation. The play explores themes of science, mentorship, generational conflict, and the personal lives of women in science.

  32. The weather is giving me cravings for smoky fire-roasted pineapple with red chilli powder sprinkled over it, a hot cup of lemon tea, and some warm chiblu idli steamed while wrapped in cotton cloth. Sensory pleasures make the apocalypse seem less imminent.

  34. One of the G20 events in 2023 happened in Mysore. I wasn't in town for the event. I asked one of the participants about how the event was. He replied, "All talk and no concrete action". I said, "That sounds like the road rage in #Mysore".
