  1. This week's #NewBooks at the library: Three more books from my employer's January sale (Is there more to come? Yes, there is more to come): All books that I would love to review at some point.
    - The Skeptics' Guide to the Future: What Yesterday's Science and Science Fiction Tell Us About the World of Tomorrow; the second book by the Novella brothers of the Skeptics' Guide to the Universe podcast, published by Hodder & Stoughton.
    - Ants: Workers of the World; a photographic portfolio by author Eleanor Spicer Rice and photographer Eduard Florin Niga, published by Abrams.
    - Bright Green Lies: How the Environmental Movement Lost Its Way and What We Can Do About It; a searing critique by Derrick Jensen, Lierre Keith, and @maxwilbert, published by Monkfish Book Publishing.

  2. Been working on some outworlds (foraging areas) for some Pogonomyrmex ants. Made with a high heel shoe box, some custom 3D printed fittings, Ultracal 30 and some Arizona sand.

Sorry no banana for scale, but would fit inside for sure.

  3. Sorry for the blurry pic, but was a quick one as relocated this to better keep an eye on it. It's a prototype nest I've been testing for ants, and this is a Pogonomyrmex occidentalis ants founding nest.

The white spots towards the middle are her brood pile she was moving as I moved it and disturbed her.

This nest lets me hydrate from top or bottom and with a high clay compound that should reduce risk of collapse.

  4. My Camponotus americanus queen (an uncommon species I find here during flights), has the biggest brood yet of any #Camponotus queen I've ever raised. Curious if related to the new dirt/clay nest type I've been testing, or just a queen that's a bit more prone to egg laying

  5. Having fun with a new clip-on macro lens watching some (pratensis, I think) that seem to have made home on raspberries 🐜🖤 They’ve curled up some leaves with many ants hiding inside them, but still no aphids nowhere to be seen

  6. We’ve had these ants (Black-backed Meadow Ants, I think) in the garden for couple years now. The workers seem to be larger than last year, I guess they’re doing well 🐜. Ants often get bad rep in , but we never had any issues with these, all the berry plants around them are as productive as ever and here they even seem to maybe be getting in on

  7. Le portage social est un comportement très particulier de certaines #fourmis qui, au lieu d'utiliser des pistes de phéromones, portent leurs soeurs vers un nouvel endroit pour leur montrer le chemin:

  8. After keeping ants for the last several years, decided to try a different design for a formicarium. This is for Pogonomyrmex occidentalis. I had success with a mix of native Arizona fine sand, and Zoomed clay digging material with a H. arizonensis vivarium and creating stable tunnels.

The tubes along the top and sides are vents. On the bottom is a tray I can inject water for hydration.

One of the first prints I did off my new printer 😊

  9. CW: fourmis / ants

#antsofmastodon #myrmecology #fourmis #myrmecologie #ants #antsof #antsofmastodon #myrmecology #fourmis #myrmecologie #ants #antsof

  12. Found in forests, woodland, and scrub jungles, but also in the parks and gardens of urban Mumbai, their large pagoda style nests are not only hard to miss, but also earn them the 'pagoda' moniker.

  13. Today, on cool critters which share our planet, but which we seldom notice, let's meet the Pagoda ant (Crematogaster sp.).

These tree-dwelling ants are amongst those bugs which have pioneered the making of cardboard (much like the 'paper' wasps which build papery nests from chewed-up plant fiber).

  14. I. Do. It.
I'm interviewing an #ant! She is a fascinating person. At the moment, she talks to me about the traditions of her tribe dating from 50 Mio yrs ago! (Homo sapiens is such a primitive newcomer on earth). And her profession ... you won't believe it!

Did I already note that I do love my profession as a #journalist? This opportunity to interview such #celebrities! 🥰

  15. CW: Illustration of a Yellow Meadow Ant

Yesterday was the last course on the #BioLinks project delivered in London. A bittersweet moment. Speechless to have been gifted this original artwork of a Yellow Meadow #Ant (Lasius flavus) by the very talented #LizzieHarper. Many thanks to a newly trained & very enthusiastic entomologist. 😍

  16. Man, I've got some well-fed #ants. Look at those big, swollen gasters!

    That's my
#Camponotus pennsylvanicus (Black Carpenter #Ant) #queen, several of her daughters, and some of her brood pile within their #AntsCanada Camponotus Hybrid Nest.
