It is fascinating how #life in the #soil has organized itself. The #mycorrhizal# networks are a good example. They connect #trees and all other #plants to form a #forest and transport substances and information to exactly where they are needed most.
If we set aside our #anthropocentric way of looking at things (you could just as well call it arrogance and conceit), we see this #intelligence in all living #organisms, from bacteria to humans, from anthills to the entire #planet.

Encountered some #fungi during our walk at #Kirroughtree yesterday, and explained to our 7yo about the #mycorrhizal network. Looking for a textbook on the subject, I came across the name Paul Stamets, which, having watched #startrekdiscovery, struck me as just too much of a coincidence. Seems the contemporary expert influenced the whole #sporedrive plotline, and the Lt Cmdr was named after him in tribute! Hence the #MerlinSheldrake book I saw in #wigtown today referencing both!

In an Oregon white #oak (Quercus garryana) #woodland, more than 40 #fungus spp form #mycorrhizal associations with oaks. Many of the fungi are truffles, fruiting belowground. California voles, deer mice, and harvest mice eat the truffles and disperse spores, potentially playing a role in the reproduction and spread of oak woodlands by inoculating unoccupied soil.

Planted in the1770's, the #Tree still stands w/ metal struts for support betw/ the PoW Conservatory & the Hive.
The Great Storm (1987) lifted the tree out of the #Earth, freed the #RootPlate from centuries of #Compacted #Soil, & inspired #Arborists to rethink compaction.
They now use air spades to inject #Nitrogen & #Mycorrhizal #Fungi. -
