After the workout (focused on upper body strength as the walls of snow by the path are waist high and by the drive shoulder high), I can report that the snow depthe on the porch steps was about the same as yesterday and that for about two hours, snow is falling an inch on hour here in the forest uphill from Gastineau Channel. #MyAlaskaWeather

6:15AM: 44F & cloudy.
One thing about rain in the SE: if you keep predicting it long enough it will eventually happen. (I'm looking at you, NWS...WTH was up the last few days??)
The wind started around midnight-ish so our first (of now 3!) gales is upon us. There was a bit of rain, but it's paused right now.
Now we're supposed to have heavy rainy weather through Wed. 🤷♀️
In other news, our cultural-Christmas/Yule decorating is complete.

Just cloudy today which is fine with me. I need to get a walk in! Then it will be on to decorating our cedar Christmas tree. (Of course pics to follow.)
We have a "potent low" heading our way early Monday bringing rain for Sitka and a decent gale out front.
My partner hasn't been able to get the boat out for weeks and he's getting stir-crazy. We need venison for the freezer and he needs his Goddard hot spring fix. 🤣

Woke up to the wind that blew clouds in last night. I think one or two people got a "green glow" last night, but no dancing ribbons for us. 😭

The rain is supposed to be mixed with snow this morning, but it's too dark to tell. 😆

6:00AM: 39F, mostly cloudy. Rain expected to start late morning/early afternoon as a gale moves in. Just a wee one, though. 35kt and 17ft seas.
I've seen wonderful pics of last night's full moon with a perfect circle around it. Glad we had clear skies!
The rest of the week is rain, rain, rain likely, rain likely, rain, rain...
Last year at this time when we went into the woods for our Xmas tree, we had snow, snow, snow!

8:00AM: 43F, cloudy, heavy enough mist to almost qualify as light rain. Almost.
The forecast this week for those non-pluviophiles is daunting: ahem...rain!
For the few, the proud, the rain-lovers, it's music to our ears (on our roofs!)
It IS supposed to be getting colder later this week. I'm OK with that - it's been unsettlingly warm.

8:00AM: 47F, light rain. Forecast is for rain all day, sometimes heavy, patchy fog. Good thing I'm staying in today!
Sitka High School's music department had a poinsettia fundraiser. I had to share the gorgeousness...of course I had to buy two: one for home, one for the office.
For some reason I have an abundance of Yule/Solstice/Christmas cheer this year.
I'm riding the wave.

Should be a good day for walking down to the Christmas Bazaar, then shopping downtown. Only a 50% chance of rain. -
7:30AM - mostly cloudy. We were supposed to have heavy rain last night but ...nothing.
Supposed to rain heavily today...we'll see.
We were up super early to be at the grocery store at 6AM to get 25% off gift cards. At the highest allowed, you can get $2000 of groceries for $1500.
The place was packed by 5:30AM.

6:00AM: 41F, cloudy, winds 10-15mph. Rain for Thanksgiving, but possible gale has disappeared.
All quiet on the Sitka front.

Sitka's 6AM flight was delayed and now has returned to the gate.
It's nasty out there! I think it's the Juneau leg that's messing things up.

5:45AM 45F and POURING rain.
It poured all night too.
If it wasn't for life-threatening landslides in the SE area, I'd be loving this. Wrangell on my mind. 😭

I missed your conversation last night (I'm old, I go to bed early) but I checked the landslide danger here this morning and it's still low.
Waiting to hear updates on the Wrangell/POW slides. Just awful.
Things are quieting down for your flight in tonight, although I had one friend change his flight plans and stay here for the holiday.

5:45AM: 39F, feels like 28F with the wind, light rain. Windy has 27kt sustained wind with close to 50kt gusts. Over 50kt gusts by mid-morning.
Wind & rain started right on schedule around 2:30AM. Someone on Sitka Chatters asked about an earthquake so evidently some windows rattled around town.

Monday, E wind to 65kt, gusts to 80kt.
That area is from the tip of Kruzof Island (Cape Edgecumbe) north. Right outside our front door.
Hooboy. It's gonna blow.

RIP Juneau, Skagway, Haines...you will be blanketed with lots of snow shortly.
Look at little ole' Sitka on Baranof Island. We seem to be emerging unscathed except for lots of rain...and wind. Lots of wind.
PS. I predicted this morning that the gale warning would change to a storm warning and...bingo! 50kt winds tomorrow on the outside with 29' seas. Follow me for more exceptionally precise forecasts. 🤣

5:30AM: 35F, mostly cloudy.
Windy has 6" of wet snow Monday, with 2" inches of rain on either side.
NWS is predicting 1-2" of snow on Monday (but they are always conservative until after the main event has passed - haha.) They did up the gale on Monday from 40kt to 45kt. I'll wager it'll hit storm force at 50kt.
The Weather Channel has NO snow at all, but at least 4" of rain over Monday, day & night.

7:30AM: 39F and cloudy.
NWS is continuing to monitor what will likely be an "impactful" snow event for the panhandle. There is still uncertainty about how far east or west the low will flow. That will determine how much precipitation is snow and how much is rain.
We have a special weather statement on the website, so we are special indeed.
Because Sitka is basically in the middle of the Panhandle, it's a coin toss as to what we'll get.

I was out in the pouring rain for 4 hours, walked 3 miles, bought a pie at the Lutheran church, fish pie at the AnB hall, watched a parade, then bought black cod tips and went home. Sitka at its finest and I loved every minute.

Standing in line for the Lutheran pie sale...watching the parade...will require rain pants,, a heavy rain coat and Xtra Tuffs on this Alaska Day!

But we have a heavy rain warning for tomorrow.
Alaska Day is fraught for the state, but it's felt the most here in Sitka. Well...I should say it's fraught for any caring, compassionate, thinking person, but I digress.
