  7. MXroute are advertising their '2025 Lifetime 15G' promotion package:

    accounts.mxroute.com/index.php

It would cost $1 per year, plus a $248 setup fee. Basically, the $1 per year is a 'trigger' to ensure that the account is still wanted by a customer.

    Jar explains his lifetime plans:

  8. If you are hosting mail with #MXroute, please note that their "Expert Spam Filtering" (default enabled, but not rolled out everywhere yet) classifies mail servers hosted at #Hetzner as

    > suspicious IP ranges that typically don't host legitimate mail servers

    docs.mxroute.com/docs/expert-s

The result is that MXroute bounces legitimate mail without ever notifying their customer.

    > 550 Unauthenticated mail not allowed from this range to protected domain

The recourse is to ask for whitelisting.

  10. I am looking for a reliable mail hosting provider, with 2FA, unlimited aliases (including catch-all * ), POP+SMTP+IMAP, no mobile app required, with configurable domain but not bundled to the provider being the registrar. Possibly based in EU/Switzerland.

    Discarded options:
    - I am moving away from Gandi.
    - Infomaniak seems to require registering domain with them.
    - Zoho based in UK.
    - MXroute does not seem to offer 2FA.
    - Autistici/Inventati only with one of their domains (not configurable).
    - Fastmail based in Australia.
    - Mailcheap based in USA.

    Thankful for any suggestions 😀

  11. @rachel I use #MXRoute for all my domains, does the trick for me and I know my mail is in good hands.

  12. @jenna it seems to be an issue with #Gmail in particular.

I use #MXRoute for my personal email account - I just tried sending an email from that account via Apple Mail and it did not reveal my IP address. The first "Received" header is my #MXRoute mail server.

  13. Let's see how this goes. In my ever-growing fear of getting locked out of my life from losing access to my Google and/or Apple accounts, I threw together a few things for self-hosting my own e-mail.

I purchased the lifetime 10GB storage, unlimited domains/emails deal from #MXRoute for $99. I installed getmail, dovecot-imapd, and dovecot-submissiond on my home server.

getmail uses POP-SSL to check for new e-mails every 5 minutes, retrieve them, and delete them from MXRoute's mailbox. I have a separate getmailrc file for each mailbox. These are transformed into Maildir structure/format in a ZFS pool. The 10GB storage in MXRoute is now just a receiving buffer and should be plenty in the case of local downtime.

Meanwhile, dovecot serves IMAP-SSL and SMTP-SSL using certificates generated by Caddy for my other services. The IMAP piece retrieves passwords by invoking pass, but submissiond (the SMTP-SSL relay submission server added to Dovecot in 2.3) seems not to have the same password_command functionality as Dovecot's other features (yet?), so that's unfortunately in permissed plaintext for a relay e-mail account only used for sending (no inbox).

Next step are a few management scripts as there's some duplication between configurations, but overall I'm happy with how quick it was to set up.

  15. @MadSci that's exactly what I fear too. I use #MXRoute purely to solve the IP reputation challenge for email. While they've been great to work with, I'd prefer not to see the #fediverse go the same way.

It feels like getting on the #relay train early might be the best individual defense against this.
