If you're looking at that "Laurie Voss" @[email protected] thing you *really* need to click through and read all the way down the comments
That clown showed up on Mastodon earlier today and was *not* well-received, to put it mildly
The majority of responders ended up #Muting, #Blocking and #DomainBlocking his entire little self-hosted vacuum cleaner
He's quite proud of himself and the responses he got
A bright-eyed little troll coder-bro, IMO...
YMMV...

I wonder how many people have blocked or muted me here. As far as I'm aware, there is no way of finding out.
I know of three users who have blocked me, but there could be many more. Two of those announced they were going to do so, while I discovered the other block myself.People don't say if they are muting you, so I could be silenced by hundreds! Somebody suggested they were using hashtags to mute my Kpop posts; that's fine with me, as I have no desire to clutter timelines with unwanted material.
I do very little blocking and muting myself. I have blocked and reported a handful of users whose posts were blatantly racist or antisemitic. I also had to do the same to a user who posted what appeared to be child pornography. Generally, however, I try to be as open minded as possible; I don't think it's good for me to hide away from stuff I disagree with or dislike.
I have muted a few* users whose posting threatened to overwhelm my timeline. I feel a little bad about that, because they are probably nice people who are unaware that I have chosen to put their passions aside.
Do others block and mute more than I do?
*EDIT More than " a few" -- 29, in fact, when I looked earlier today to see how many I had muted. So perhaps I'm not as open minded as I thought!

Over the top reactions to routine stuff get muted.

Periodic PSA: If you have for habit of boosting all the things, you run the risk of getting your boosts muted.
I'm trying to keep the signal-to-noise ratio under control.
-
I'm muting folks over the above behavior. Either they have muted *me* and do not know of my policy, or they just flat out don't care.
-
If you don't want to see me naked don't look in my window.
-
So yeah... Someone was posting too much stuff. My timeline was overwhelmed by them, and the message of their posts was about the same.
I muted them.
And Mastodon noticeably took time to re-filter my timeline.
That's proof that I was not just being a curmudgeon.

“The unbearable lightness of being” #SocialMedia is increasingly enabled by the power of #muting. In my opinion, it is more unobtrusive than #blocking. #Mute #Block

I'm starting to see people on #bluesky now saying, they enjoy #blocking people and #muting them. And I also seeing people moan when people they don't follow them reply. That seems like a really bad sign to me. If people don't want #conversation then there seems no point in #socialmedia at all.

I'm not going to lie: automatically expiring mutes are how I've managed to keep several people in my feed.
Don't get me wrong, I like reading what these people post. Most of the time. But sometimes they overwhelm my timeline, and I need a break. The ability to mute these accounts for a couple hours is why I can keep them around. If I couldn't do that I'd have to drop them.
Great feature!

How bad a person am I?
My native #language is English. I tried learning foreign languages in school, but my brain hated it. (conversely I'm very good at computer languages). So I can't read other languages. Other people post their in their native languages and it shows up on my feed. To curate my feed I've been #muting people who post in languages I don't read. How bad a person am I for doing this?
In no way am I upset that people are posting in other languages.

Kamala Harris’s campaign co-chair Mitch Landrieu on Wednesday
💥mocked Donald Trump over the #microphone #muting issue at the upcoming presidential debate,
saying his own team
⚠️ “wants to shut him up.”“You know, I find it so interesting that what we’re fighting about is the fact that 🔥his own team wants to shut him up,”
Landrieu said Wednesday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “I don’t know if I’ve ever heard that before in the debates and the rules of the debates.” -
Have you ever considered why people in #Europe aren't choosing to have more children?
Europe is very heavily populated already.
It is your choice to label #Europeans who don't want irresponsible levels of #immigration and #populationGrowth as "#xenophobic", however by doing so you are over-simplifying a #complexProblem.
Making such a #generalisation, #muting and not wishing to engage in #debate might be #expedient but will only deepen the problems.

Periodic PSA: If you find any content that I post objectionable, here are your options:
1. Ignore it.
2. Learn to use your filters. Really, this is the best answer if you cannot ignore it. I suspect that I'm not alone pushing past what you want, so...
3. Mute me.
4. Block me.
This morning, someone took me to task for having boosted a political post. They said they wanted to read my stuff about neurodivergence. I replied "use filters." They replied that they'd rather not read me.
Well...
Wish granted.
I blocked them.
That's what you get when you ask someone like me who cares not to disturb your peace. If you cannot use the tools at your disposal to filter out what you find objectionable, then my only option is to stop you from reading me.
Now, see, the political posts that I boost, and you think are not about neurodivergence, are *actually* about neurodivergence.
"Lol wut?"
My sense of social justice comes from my neurodivergence, and this is what makes me boost them.
This is my brand of self-care.

PSA: Link shorteners are not needed in the fediverse.
If you regularly use link shorteners, I'm muting you.
"But I'm on a instance that requires me to... [some excuses.]"
Move to a sane instance.
Have a nice day.

I'm starting to mute the boosts of people I don't want to mute the boosts of.

With Mastodon, there is a lot of control in your hands about the content you want to (or don't want to) see.
You can use the Filters feature to hide certain keywords or topics that you do not want to see.
Try it out here:

I'm starting to mute those folks who post a screenshot of an article without the article itself.
I don't care what your reason is. I don't want that in my timeline.
-
Just discovered that you can mute hashtags on Mastodon. Invaluable when there's some stupid song contest getting way too much attention.
-
Do you want to block or mute someone on Mastodon? Do you want to mute someone temporarily? Do you want to mute DMs from strangers? Want to mute just someone's boosts? Want to hide posts with certain words or phrases?
These and other questions are answered in this guide to blocking and muting on Mastodon:
I've tried to cover all the questions that people ask, but please let me know if I've missed something or got something wrong.

And blocking. Don’t forget blocking.
“Unlike unfollowing or blocking someone, the muted party has no idea they’ve been silenced, so you don’t risk any awkwardness or drama.”
Don’t be afraid to block. Whether they are total dickheads, or just repeatedly irritating, you needn’t put up with them. Get them gone.

I'd like to hear from some of the #TechPros, like @atomicpoet or @ploum, here in the #Fediverse about #muting vs. #blocking #trolls and #propaganda/ #FauxNews peddlers.
You might have a point there.

You know, which is worse?
I mean, blocking just stops that person seeing your posts ...
But muting allows them to see everything you do, but every comment they make is completely ignored and you just carry on regardless.
I like muting, [evil laugh] heh heh heh.

@whiteice and any newcomers.... def recommend playing around to get comfy here.
my account #curation is now really working better for me bc i generally follow mainly #hashtags more than #follow new accounts
as far as #blocking type issues my strategy tends to be #filter the whole site for stuff i am drained by, accounts i do follow i unfollow most accounts' #boosts immediately, i try #muting people b4 #unfollowing them, and lastly block (for mainly unwelcome #replyguys)

We have a policy of not #muting toots.
But…
If this toot gets 10 boosts (from ppl who follow us) we will mute toots that contain links to "github.com".
