Whoo boy, have I had a rough last two weeks. First it was Superbowl weekend and preping the house for last weekend, which was Valentine's Day and work related commitments, with each day during the weeks preceding being consumed with IRL happenings. I literally only finally had time to decompress from it all on Friday since it was my day off from said Sunday commitment. Feels good to be back, though!
Let's pick back up where we left off, and see where we can get with Wu's musou, shall we? Feels like we're getting close to Chi Bi, which I hope they put work into making feel massive and weighty. Come stop by and see how well they did!

Day 25, and the final day of our original block of playing through every Dynasty Warriors game today. We ended our first foray into this series with Dynasty Warriors 8, and man if nostalgia didn't keep DW3 at the top of my list, 7 would only be bested by 8 for the top spot. 8 is solidly a fantastic entry to the series, and one I will probably return to in the future.
For today, though, we have to leave this block a bit unfinished, as from here, there were a few lost VODs of us playing through Tekkit, before I stumbled upon a modpack that felt quite close to home...
For those who have stuck with this first block of #ThreeKingdoms adventures, I thank you; it has been a blast revisiting this series I held onto fondly from my childhood, and one that I am currently revisiting once again. If you're hungry for more, and can't catch a Sunday Stream, the VODs will be available soon enough.

Day 24, and today we're finally at the end of Dynasty Warriors 7 today! We actually ended slightly early, so instead of picking up with DW8 we ended up switching over to Warframe for a bit as well.
This whole block was a blast to play through, and fun enough to revisit that it caused me to pick up the series again live on Twitch, so if you're looking for more 1-vs-thousands style hack & slash action, come on by and say hi!

Day 23, and we're getting close to finishing up our journey through time, fighting through hordes of other people trying to validate their heavens-given right to rule, so that our heavens-given right to rule can be made manifest.
This was such a fun series to return to, and I'm glad I got to share it with you all. This series has had its own share of ups and downs over the years, but I really do think these two games here towards the end, 7 & 8, are just the right mix of classic design and modern iterative improvements.
If you've enjoyed these VODs don't worry, they won't be the last ones. We've been returning to this series again over on Twitch, where we finished up 8 and are now on 9 as of yesterday! If you want more hack & slash action, now's the time to get in on them live, otherwise it'll be a bit before the VODs here catch up!

Day 22, almost at the end of the original block of games. Another thing I appreciate from DW7/8 are the break up of the kingdoms' musous/stories from "play one character through the entire storyline", to "play the character you want, but only on their battles", before the one I personally prefer, "play through the entire kingdom storyline, on these select few characters who were relevant during this specific battle". It lets you try out different characters, play different roles, and use different weapons with EX attacks and musous that you otherwise wouldn't.
The leveling system is brought back but is kingdom-wide, the weapons you find are universal and shared which is honestly a nice compromise. Instead of items you unlock and improve skills via a skill tree in 7 or just a pool of skills in 8. For as much bloating that happens in these titles when I comes to characters and weapons, the rest of the game takes a step back, which is appreciated.

Day 21 of unifying China for the dozenth time, and today we're back in Dynasty Warriors 7 hittin' dudes with tennis rackets.
One thing I will give DW7 and DW8 credit for, is how they managed to play with the gameplay win conditions enough to vary up the missions from simply "go defeat enemy bad guy №1 and succeed in winning the mission!" into "oh shit they got the upper hand, we need to escape!" or even "this strapping young lad shows great potential, I know how we can recruit him, just gaslight everyone else on their team into thinking he's garbo and he'll definitely fight for us!"
Ethically questionable, sure, but you have to give Koei Tecmo credit for accurately portraying the subterfuge and clandestine efforts people in 100 AD China employed to sway the heavens into agreeing that their right to rule is right!

Day 20 today and our journey through Dynasty Warriors 7 continues. I will say, though, that no matter where the modern entries to this series ends up on the overall ranking of the full list, they're still going to be above those that are unenjoyable. 6 faltered at times and 7 has weird DLC, but I still had way more fun with them than 2 (as well as possibly 9, when we get to that entry in the future?)
Rough estimates so far would probably put the total series at 3, 8, 7, 5, 6, 4, and 2. That is with no thought put behind it at all and is entirely off the cuff. I'd love to do a series retrospective at some point and give a proper rating, but man I booted up 8 again recently (as you may have seen from my live notifications) and wasn't able to put it down last night. There's just something about it that feels so good to play, it's like being back on 3 again.
Here's hoping Origins brings back that magic because at this point I just hope 9 is competent.

Day 19, in the home stretch now, back again with more Dynasty Warriors 7 which means more silly anachronistic weaponry being swung at hapless footsoldiers in the name of conquest and destiny.
Don't get me wrong, I love DW7 but this bit of DLC or whatever it was still irks me, and I'm glad that, so far, we have yet to see anything like it in 8.

Day 18, here we go! We're fully in the modern era of the Dynasty Warriors series, with DW7 today! I was absolutely not expecting the joke weapons, let alone the fact that they outperformed almost every other weapon for a long time. I don't need to conquer China with a tennis racket.
Other than that minor gripe, DW7 quickly became a personal favorite of mine, sitting comfortably high up on whatever tier list I have yet to finalize for the series.

Day 17 on our time loop through the fall of the Han Dynasty, and today we're looking to finish up the Kingdom of Jin in Dynasty Warriors 6, marking the end of the console-exclusive ports of the games in this historic series. Like the Jin transitioning from the first era of the generation-spanning conflict, so too does Dynasty Warriors 6 cross the boundary between classic Musou titles and the modern era.
After we finish up here we'll be in for some fun next gen titles with 7 and 8. Fair warning, though, we were only able to stream one session of DW8 during this block, but fear not, for that is not where the VODs end for this series...

Day 16 on our Dynasty Warriors Adventures, and we're back in Dynasty Warriors 6 for today.
I will say, one thing I found interesting upon replaying 6 was that the one-on-one duels we had back in 4 returned, but with a more seamless experience now where the foot soldiers gather around the two generals, rather than loading a completely separate play space for the duel. I never really had a problem with the duels, per se, but the fact that you couldn't tactically retreat out of one always bugged me.

Day 15 of playing through every Dynasty Warriors game, and we've finally moved beyond the PS2 and 4:3 aspect ratio content. Onto the Xbox 360 we go in glorious 16:9 HD footage!
It's astonishing how stark the shift from the classic era to the modern era of this series was. More dudes on screen are expected, higher fidelity graphics are expected. The shift to the gameplay mechanics and systems though were rough to get used to at first. They were reined in over the next two games, but 6 was such a departure from 3, 4, and 5, that it almost stumbles as a result.
It's not a bad game, more of a black sheep. 7 and 8 definitely improve upon the new changes and refine them into much more cohesive games. For what it's worth, though, we stick around 6 for a few streams and have a good time with it.

Day 14 on our Dynasty Warriors journey, and today we finish up Dynasty Warriors 5, closing out Wei's musou with the heir to the throne, Cao Pi, as our character of choice. From there we jump over to Dynasty Warriors 6, with Zhang He leading the charge this time around.
It's still wild how much Dynasty Warriors 6 shakes up the formula, decidedly marking the shift between the classic era and the modern era of these titles. The Renbu system, the removal of the weapon combo moveset, the condensed weapon pool, it's all just so different. It's why I still regard 3, 4, and 5 as their own thing and rank them separately from 6, 7, and 8.

Day 13 of playing through every Dynasty Warriors game, and we're back with more Dynasty Warriors 5, diving back into Xing Cai's musou once again, and whoo boy do we have a rough few missions ahead of us today...
I have never been this stuck on a singular mission before, least of all during these VODs. Xing Cai's final mission is brutal, mixing in ambushes and difficult reinforcements during an escort mission with an incompetent leader. Ironically, the most successful strategy I employed involved keeping him with me during the bulk of the fight, as then the game was forced to actually force combat to play out properly rather than the simpler simulation based on morale and dice rolls when they're away. Because I was able to keep an eye on Liu Chan, his chances of survival were much higher following me around than if you brought him back to base like you're instructed to. Even with this strategy, the mission still took literal hours to overcome.

Day 12 of our adventures through the Three Kingdoms via playing every Dynasty Warriors game, and we're back with Dynasty Warriors 5 today, continuing where we left off with Long Tong's musou, before switching over to Xing Cai and her bident of merciless destruction!
These more personalized storylines are definitely an interesting change for the series, though I'm glad Koei returned to the kingdom-wide musou structure in future titles, even with the compromise of switching characters between each battle. This structure gives each character their chance to take center stage and tell their own story, especially the more characters that are added that are among the "lesser players" of the larger narrative, like Ling Tong and Xing Cai.

Day 11 of our journey through every Dynasty Warriors game today, and it looks like we're finally finishing up Dynasty Warriors 4. I'm surprised we spent this long on 4, considering how much I prefer 3, although to be fair there's not as much to see in 3.
Either way, we're on to Dynasty Warriors 5 now, and here's where we really start seeing the formula getting iterated on. The immediate change is that musous are not per kingdom, but rather we get to play through each individual character's journey through the larger story being told. This gives a much more personal and intimate perspective (as much as one can in a beat em up of the time), and while I'm sure young UZ did not appreciate this change, I can say as an adult that it's a nice change of pace.
