What the fuck is going on with ICE and the Canadian #border? Why are they checking cars *leaving* the US?

Twice in the past month I've gone to #Canada via #Buffalo NY, at two different crossings. Both times, #ICE / #CBP (#BorderPatrol) had makeshift stations set up on the no-u-turns-allowed approach roads to the Canadian customs/border stations. They were stopping all cars and questioning people. The first time I got a glance and a wave. The second time I got "What's your destination? What's the purpose of your visit? What are you carrying in your car? Do you have more than $1K in cash?"

This is NOT NORMAL. #Cops do not stop people leaving the USA for #international #travel. They only stop those trying to get (back) in. Screening who leaves the country sets off my Jack-Booted Thugs Radar (thugdar? IDK). This reeks of #authoritarianism. It's freaky and I'm not coming up with any benign reasons for spending all the money/manpower to do this.

Does anyone know what the hell is going on?

Context: I don't trust ICE/CBP any farther than I can throw them, after living near the US-Mexico border for a decade, and after spending some time studying immigration and related things. ICE is arguably the most #corrupt police organization in North America (but see Canadian Mounties for a contender). They demonstrate serious #MissionCreep, and they are a tail wagging the political dog for #immigration issues. ICE sucks. Remember when they refused for weeks to comply with court orders to stop the #MuslimBan a few years ago?
