I’m a #musicologist and #medievalist, an early-morning writer, woods-walker, gardener, birder, and habitual generalist who finds the world interesting.

My research centers on women’s religious communities in the later Middle Ages and early modern period: including music, sound and memory, plus the messy evidence of how people actually used their #books and #manuscripts. (I'm currently writing on the sisters of Thalbach in Bregenz: not-quite-nuns, they appear first as beguines and later as Franciscan tertiaries.) #nuntastic

There’s a lot of Brahms on my playlist, and Machaut (of course), and Barbara Strozzi, and even some #Bardcore.

The #musicians’ #story is the subject of a newly #translated #book, “Music at World’s End: Three Refugee Musicians from Nazi #Germany and Their Contribution to Iceland’s Music Life,” by #Icelandic #musicologist #ÁrniHeimirIngólfsson. It was #published in #English this year by #SUNYPress following the Icelandic edition in 2024.

Yang Yin-liu (1899~1984), courtesy name Liang-qing, art name Er-zhuang, Qing-ru, was a Chinese musicologist and the founder of Chinese ethnomusicology. He recorded and arranged traditional Chinese music, wrote hundreds of monographs and papers, and researched the songs of Jiang Kui of Song Dynasty, compiled a number of folk music collections, and made great contributions to the preservation and development of Chinese ethnic music.

Just saw this sad news, in memory of Prof. Du Ya-xiong 🕯️
Mr. Du Ya-xiong was an outstanding musicologist in China. He researched and organised Chinese ethnic music theory and ethnic music, filling in many academic gaps. In addition, he also participated in the translation of foreign language monographs such as Twentieth-Century Harmony, and promoted the Chineseisation of the “Kodály Method”. He has left many valuable achievements for the music field.

@J12t @mmasnick I’m in with you. We actually had chances to learn about a new class of art, the #transform, innumerable times. For example with Hip-Hop music, and EDM.

But we keep ignoring the signs, shoehorning everything into the ”original artist” conception and rubberbanding back to the old ownership concepts.

I’m a #musicologist, and I’ve read so many good theories that never get out of libraries on this problem..

#introductions:

I’m a #musicologist and #medievalist, an early morning writer and a regular woods-walker, and a generalist in the classroom (#Shakespeare; #pandemics). I research women’s monastic communities, especially their libraries. I’m currently focused on the Tertiaries of Thalbach in #Bregenz, Austria, with a side-tour to the #chaplains of the city. I’ve published on women as scribes and on historiography, but a lot of my current engagement is with German prayer-books.

But there's a life (and love) for the #violadamore even outside the (relative) niche of #Baroque music... Like the violin or viola, it's a #fretless instrument, which means that beyond the standards of #Western #music, it can easily play any mode or scale such as #Oriental ones. #Tunisian #musician and #musicologist Jasser Haj Youssef, for example, has "imported" the viola d'amore to the art of the #maqâm, using the sympathetic strings to create a richer, deeper sound:

I'm a classical #mezzosoprano and #musicologist by training. I listen to #classicalmusic, #metal (mostly progressive), #ebm and a random assortment of other stuff.

I'm a regular #fawm participant, and I compose more or less #experimental #electronic music in #SuperCollider. I do #livestream s where I explore :sccube: concepts and compose out loud.

I sing #choralmusic (classical and jazz) and play #guitar. Will occasionally infodump on #musictheory.
