  1. So Australia’s music charts just banned AI-generated songs - Bravo !

From now on, to qualify for ARIA charts, tracks have to be substantially human made. That means actual humans writing the songs, singing lead vocals, and playing the main instruments. AI can still help with mastering or effects, but the heart of the music has to come from people.
This came after a Madonna cover by DJ Josh Fawaz largely AI made has topped the dance chart and hit #2 overall. It felt wrong. Music is about connection, emotion, and human experience. Letting algorithms take over the charts cheapens that for everyone, especially for real artists pouring their souls into their work.
ARIA’s message is spot on. A chart that rewards unlicensed AI output would undercut the very basis of the recorded music we exist to represent.
I’m all for using AI as a tool, it can be creative and fun. This move protects musicians, keeps the charts meaningful, and says loud and clear music is human first.

  3. I'm often proud of my kids in a vague, general way.

This evening I got to be proud of one for A Specific Thing.

  5. Bagpipe tunes for a funeral that aren’t Amazing Grace:

The Great Highland Bagpipe is the most emotionally evocative instrument for a funeral. But most people aren’t familiar with the tradition of the pipes, and have no idea what music to ask the piper to play.

Often people will ask for the tunes they heard a piper play on YouTube or at another funeral. And often that means they ask for Amazing Grace or Highland Cathedral.

Amazing Grace entered the repertoire when a famous pipe band recorded it in the 1970s, and Highland Cathedral was written by two Germans in the 1980s.

Take it from me: most pipers have a huge repertoire of tunes that aren’t either of those, and would love to bring that music to comfort the grieving.

Here’s a quick list of tunes that go beyond the usual suspects, would be absolutely beautiful played at a funeral, and most pipers will know them if they are getting paid to play:

I Will Go Home To Kintail
    Going Home
Sleep Dearie, Sleep (Played at Queen Elizabeth’s funeral)
    The Sleeping Tune
    Leaving Lismore
    Rhu Vaternish
    The Banks of Lochiel
Any 3/4 retreat or Gaelic Air, played sensitively
