Playing a musical instrument is a skill.
Playing a musical instrument WITH OTHER MUSICIANS is a different, more complex skill.
This is a public service announcement from your rhythm section.

I am up about 4 hours past my bedtime
but I had a lovely evening with my former classmates from the studio engineering school playing music and playing with gear and (eventually) recording a reasonably fun rendition of House of the Rising Sun with my lovely wife on vocals and me on bass.
Fun group, even if they make me feel older than dirt.

The hardest part of #musicking is the musicians*
*including drummers** for the purpose of this statement
**just kidding, love y'all

Tomorrow is supposed to be #musicking. I gotta practice for the midlife crisis band, for the 90s dad rock trio, and also some #BassGuitar parts I owe other people. Anybody else want to get on the waiting list? =)

For some reason it's a good day to blast @Traiken

Dear actual #BassGuitar players:
The next class for Nashville's #Guitars4Vets chapter is starting up and this time I've been given two bass students.
I have my own ideas, of course, but a) I've never had lessons and b) I started playing in 1999 so I don't really remember clearly how to get started.
What are the most important things to start working on right away, but also ways for easy wins that are fun? The goal is achievement and fun in ten 1-hr lessons.

I wanted to test out @freebliss 's #Super8 because I'm such an adoring fan of #FairCamp
but I didn't have any good videos to upload
so first I had to record some #guitar music
Anyway, it's really easy and it works quite well. Figuring out #kdenlive was much harder by far.

Here's an audio-only 2023 rendition of the whole song but with my wife on keyboard and my friend Jacob on drums in addition to Mike on vocals and guitar. This was at a summer house party, recorded with my old Zoom H4N Pro.
(This lineup was basically the core of our community club jam.)

I abuse #SoundToys #SpaceBlender with an EVH #guitar, a retirement present from my Army friends.

This one gets delivered on Tuesday. Guess we better clear space in the living room for it.

Not moved in yet but the office is coming along

The home studio is getting smaller and smaller as I pack things up to move next week.

#VoidReclamation teaser from "Warlord"
Full song will have ALL of the content warnings but this 8 bar instrumental should be safe unless you have a weak constitution

I'm trying to mix a live song the band did in November and I have cut the bass 15dB and it's still maybe too loud. Like WTF was I doing that night?
We could only record 8 channels so it's been fun trying to get a full sound from a bunch of DI sources and two mics.

okay, I made it better
This might eventually turn into another sticker design
Edit: archive upload

Incidentally, I have updated the shirt design to incorporate a suggestion from Niko Bolas that it have a peak indicator. It also incorporates a few other tweaks from the one I was wearing before to make the knob on the back (which goes to 11) more visible and readable.
Price is set about as low as Printify will let me; I think I make like a dollar a shirt or something. SVGs also available gratis if you want to print it yourself.

I can get excited about some tools more than others

"I am on my third pot of coffee"
an older backing track I recorded bass for a long time ago
that I have finally added some guitars to
edit: tweaked some parts and the mix

Doing relatively simple things in a stupidly complicated way makes me happy

Music is a language, so you should try to communicate once you know how to make a few sounds. You'll pick up the words and the grammar as you go, learning from the people you talk with, just like kids do.
You don't to be Shakespeare to say what's on your mind. You don't need a literature degree to say something someone needs to hear.
No one who matters cares about mistakes in expression; they want to know what you have to say and try to respond meaningfully.

replacement bass fill for a Colors of Creation track

There's a reason recording studios have DOGS
[edit: also, there's a reason I only buy headphones with _detachable_ standard 1/8" cables, nothing proprietary that will be expensive to replace]

By request, another WIP demo.
"Warlord"
Upstream CWs apply.
Drums are janky fillers and bass line is a draft, but a decent one.

somehow she put this on my desk while I was recording and I didn't notice
