  1. Jadakiss asks questions like they’re a moral position. Dave Mustaine answers questions with symbols, paranoia, and fire. One mistakes interrogation for insight. The other mistakes insight for prophecy. Only one error leaves something to think about.

From Ozzy’s joyless dick jokes, to Flyleaf’s weaponized shame, to Demi Lovato turning blasphemy into flirtation—three songs, one awkward cultural anxiety. 16. Submarines in rock lyrics should involve pressure, danger, or at least a working metaphor. 26. "In 2018, the social-science blog “Data Colada” looked at Metacritic, a review aggregator, and found that more than four out of five albums released that year had received an average rating of at least seventy points out of a hundred—on the site, albums that score sixty-one or above are colored green, for “good.” Even today, music reviews on Metacritic are almost always green, unlike reviews of films, which are more likely to be yellow, for “mixed/average,” or red, for “bad.” The music site Pitchfork, which was once known for its scabrous reviews, hasn’t handed down a perfectly contemptuous score—0.0 out of 10—since 2007 (for “This Is Next,” an inoffensive indie-rock compilation). And, in 2022, decades too late for poor Andrew Ridgeley, Rolling Stone abolished its famous five-star system and installed a milder replacement: a pair of merit badges, “Instant Classic” and “Hear This.”
    (...)
Even relatively negative reviews tended to be strikingly solicitous. “Solar Power,” the 2021 album by the New Zealand singer Lorde, was so dull that even many of her fans seemed to view it as a disappointment, but it earned a polite three and a half stars from Rolling Stone. Some of the most cutting commentary came from Lorde herself, who later suggested that the album was a wrong turn—an attempt to be chill and “wafty” when, in fact, she excels at intensity. “I was just like, actually, I don’t think this is me,” she recalled in a recent interview. And, although there are plenty of people who can’t stand Taylor Swift, none of them seem to be employed as critics, who virtually all agreed that her most recent album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” was pretty good (Metacritic: 76). Once upon a time, music critics were known for being crankier than the average listener. Swift once castigated a writer who’d had the temerity to castigate her, singing, “Why you gotta be so mean?” How did music critics become so nice?"

  27. One song begs Jesus for forgiveness after jerking off. The other moans His name. This is what happens when shame becomes a kink and orgasms become a sacrament. Flyleaf’s “The Kind” and Demi Lovato’s “Heaven” aren’t companions—but they sure do make one hell of a confessional.

  29. 🎶 When does a love song stop being romantic and start sounding manipulative? Girl in Red’s “You Stupid Bitch” walks that thin line — and trips over it. A critique of toxic affection, casual misogyny, and how identity politics can’t excuse bad behavior. 💔

  31. 📊 Study reveals music critics suffer from "conformity-itis" when panning second albums! Turns out the infamous "sophomore slump" exists mainly in critics' minds, while fans consistently rate albums fairly. Looks like the only ones in a slump are the critics themselves! #MusicCriticism

The ep by Jonathan fire eater: tremble under boom lights.

Is spider-web guitars and drums that are a few decibels louder than most albums. Organs arranged to simulate circuit breaking for sustained amounts of time with vocals chanted (or rapped?) more than sang.

lyrics seem to be the descendants of the French symbolist.

Standout tracks: The Beautician and The Search for Cherry Red.

Did it invent the trend of post-punk revival in the 00s... Possibly?

  33. Strangely artful for an album that's main appeal the efficiency of its attack.

The sound is the first thing I was obsessed with the tone of the guitar the delay of the vocals, etc.

I didnt think you could have a song groove like just one fix or jesus built my hotrod with the simplicity of the chord progressions and tempos chosen...but i was wrong. These are catchy as any pop song they just have different ways of getting an earworm in your head.

  34. If an album normally included on the greatest LP's of all time type lists can be underrated it is this one.

Not as good as exile (but what is?)

Can't you hear me knocking one hell of a groove and might be their best song.

The country ballads wild horses, sister morphine and dead flowers are strangely emotive and ironic all at once.

The song I got the blues I haven't seen mentioned as a standout stones track and damn if that ain't a mistake.

  35. Steven Hyden is my favorite currently working music critic, if not the best. Pretty sure shakedown is split on Radiohead, but this is a great read, and for those in the pro-Radiohead camp, a great push to revisit some incredible records. #MusicCriticism

  36. At the end of 1973, Joni "Mitchell fired her opening shot. 'Raised on Robbery' was released as the lead single to Court and Spark. 'Robbery' is a rollicking homage to ’50s rock and roll. It’s what it might sound like if Ella Fitzgerald did uppers and covered “Johnny B. Goode.” —KC Hoard for The Walrus
