  1. Check out "3:x(1~8) polyrhythm" to explore various patterns against a steady three: youtu.be/t5Y3ZcG9zgw

Polyrhythm with 3 against 1 through 8. This project uses programming logic like variable (box) and event handlers (on every note do). It is inspired by a video made by @ryu_percussion on Instagram.

  6. I used Music Blocks today to figure out a complicated rhythm (3/4 divided into eight equal divisions and then back into 3/4).

Here's a video of me doing it: youtu.be/Tiw-tV-YCXM

  7. As performed today at Malden Porchfest: youtu.be/MaSbyMEnvF0?si=Poq636

Fun fact: I arranged the piece myself, and I used Music Blocks and GNU Lilypond to transcribe the entire piece that we performed today.

I'll try to put a version on my website as soon as I can.

  9. Today, I was able to test the audio-to-midi service that Music Blocks contributors made last summer together with my students. Here's what they made:
    * "Music Blocks Band" by four of my students (group project): musicblocks.sugarlabs.org/inde
    * "Sigma Boy" by Wesley: musicblocks.sugarlabs.org/inde

(Just like this post whether or not you understand it. The kids did great!)

They also made a video that I hope to share later.

  12. Did you know that Music Blocks has a feature to generated visual code from text-based ABC notation?

Last year, Abhijeet Singh developed a way to take ABC notation and transform it into musical code you can use in your Music Blocks (MB) projects. Need a little inspiration? You can now drag and drop some ABC notation from their website into MB.

  22. At #FOSSY24 on Sunday, there were quite a few musical activities. Multi-instrumentalist Timmy Barnett gave his presentation on "GNU/Linux Loves All: Free Software in Music", I conducted a Music Blocks workshop, a group of FOSSY participants gathered to play music and share instruments.

It was quite fun to celebrate music and software freedom / free culture in this way, and there is much to be proud of.

  23. And here's the "making of" video, for anyone who wants to watch how the program was made: iv.ggtyler.dev/watch?v=PklYj6J

I used Music Blocks's in-app screen recorded to make the video, and then I ran the following ffmpeg command:

    ffmpeg -r:v "375/1" -i making-ada-zangemann.webm -an -r:v "30/1" making-ada-zangemann-fast.webm

  24. @kirschner I came up with a Music Blocks program to demonstrate Ada & Zangemann. WDYT?

I'm reading it for my son's class in a couple of days, and thought this would be a fun activity to do at the end. I'll work with the kids to remix the code as well, inviting them to exercise some freedoms.
