"Learn what to look for (and what to avoid!) This walk is designed to be an introduction to the mycological world of Maine, with a particular focus on #EdibleMushrooms.
"The first half hour or so of class will be devoted to covering basic fungal biology and life cycle, mushroom myths/truths, and foraging practices. From there, we’ll head into the forest and scan for mushrooms, discussing our finds as we go. The species we are likely to find vary depending on season and location. By the end of class, participants will walk away with growing confidence in several choice species and inspiration to learn more.
"Meet the Instructor:
Louis Giller has spent about 15 years studying, growing, foraging, and most importantly eating mushrooms. His mycological journey began at the University of Denver where he studied environmental science and conducted oyster mushroom research inspired by Mycologist Paul Stamets. He joined North Spore about 9 years ago where he primarily works on R&D, marketing, education, and community outreach."We strongly suggest you wear long pants and sturdy shoes or boots. Consider bringing the following with you: a basket, knife, water bottle, magnifying glass, notebook, and paper bags.

Everyone is fascinated by wild mushrooms. From foraging and eating, to medicinal use and the use of psychedelics to improve creativity and address depression. The only thing standing in the way is acquiring the knowledge and confidence to tell the good mushrooms from those that can sicken you. The good news is that there are a handful of common, easily identified, great edibles or medicinals that can satisfy most peoples hunger for mushrooms. Maine is home to a number of world-class edible mushrooms easily found as you enjoy a walk through the woods and fields.
This day-long class helps to build the basic knowledge needed to identify common mushrooms and to begin a lifetime of wild mushrooming. The class will combine indoor lecture and outdoor experience in the forest to explore identification features, ecology and the seasonal occurrence of mushrooms. We will look at edible as well as common poisonous mushrooms and may end the day by cooking some of the mushrooms we find. Learn a few common edible and medicinal mushrooms and build skills to identify more."

Join mycologist and author Greg Marley for a medicinal mushroom talk focused on the common Northeastern wild and cultivated mushrooms providing health benefits in our lives and available in the woods or foraged in a good market.
#GregMarley has been studying, growing, collecting and cooking #WildMushrooms for more than 45 years. He teaches #MushroomIdentification and ecology to hundreds of new #foragers as well as consulting in cases of mushroom poisoning. Greg is the author of Mushrooms for Health; Medicinal Secrets of Northeastern Fungi (2009) and Chanterelle Dreams, Amanita Nightmares, The Love Lore and Mystique of Mushrooms (2010). Marley lives and mushrooms along the coast of Maine. When not #mushrooming he works as a mental health trainer and consultant in suicide prevention and response after a loss."

What kind of fungi is this?
I came across these fungi out in a field this last week. The field is pastureland in #Alberta frequented by grazing cattle.
They kinda look like the tiny round "puff-ball" fungi around here that max-out about the size of a golf ball. Except, like it exploded up instead of having a small spore releasing aperture. These are comparatively massive. The ones that were there were all at least 5 cm in diameter and most were closer to 10cm. One was probably 15cm.
The "bowl" appears to have a dark brown "filling" I assume is where the spores are released from.
The ones I had seen were often in a southward (more sun) facing side of slopes, generally facing toward the average sun location during morning through noon.
I did find some (what I believe are) Calvatia gigantea - Giant Puffball nearby a few of the specimens, but at least 15 to 20 m away. I don't know if they are part of the same fungi or not.What is it?
