I took the bottoms of the stipes of the wine caps I harvested the other day and put them in a bag with soil and sawdust from pellets. You can see the hyphae starting to colonize the bag of substrate.

I also put the open tops which were sporulating in the bag for good measure. I'm hoping to get a nice dense block of mycelium to spread to other areas: pots and in my friend's yard.

(I really should check on the blewits now that I think about it.)

My tomatoes are really late this year but they are gorgeous. I'm growing multiple varieties of antho(cyanin) tomatoes:
Dark Galaxy
Alice's Dream
Indigo Rose
Midnight Snack
Blaue Zimmertomate

The second photo is of: Blaue, Indigo, and Alice (from the left to right). Midnight Snacks have yet to ripen and this year they're a tiny bit smaller even than the Blaues.

But even of the cherry varieties, I have them growing on micro dwarf and indeterminate plants, which is cool (to me). And now the full size tomatoes, I have a black and red, and a black and yellow. I guess technically, the indigo rose are probably cocktail size. I really should remember to look up what the boundaries of sizes are.

The last one is just a bonus picture of an almost perfect specimen of Heartbreaker.

EDIT: I just noticed that it turned "the stipes" into "these types".

Round two of inoculating huitlacoche (corn smut).
This time on Stained Glass corn.

I made myself some makeshift corn shoot bags, because I'm not sure that my last strategy of using old cups is actually keeping the pollen off of the tassels. I guess we'll find out if I actually get any Mexican truffles instead of just corn.

I mean, as far as a consolation prize corn is a pretty good one.

I inoculated Painted Mountain corn, and Tuscarora White corn.

The raccoons absolutely decimated the peaches and cream, and I don't seem to have any nubs yet on either the Stained Glass corn or the red Aztec corn.

Now I need to cover the ones I inoculated so that they don't end up also being pollinated. Pollination apparently kills the fungus or something. 😞

The raccoons absolutely decimated the peaches and cream, and I don't seem to have any nubs yet on either the Stained Glass corn or the red Aztec corn.

Now I need to cover the ones I inoculated so that they don't end up also being pollinated. Pollination apparently kills the fungus or something. 😞

I bought liquid culture yesterday after taking a year and a bit off from growing mushrooms, after burning myself out by juggling 19 different varieties. I may have a problem with being sensible when it comes to growing things.

(I currently have 60-something varieties of tomatoes on the go, and I just ordered two more types of micro-dwarf tomatoes. More on that later.)

I ordered some old standbys, including some stropharia rugosoannulata for making a nice wine caps bed for the friend who lets me put things in his yard that I have no way to grow in a pot. (To be clear I grow the wine caps in pots, this is a thank you.)

I also got Blewits for him (and for me), Chestnut mushrooms, Black Pearl oyster mushrooms, and *so excited* Corn Smut.

We did a corn experiment¹ in his yard last year, which is when I learned that skunks can climb things(!), and not just corn stalks, the damn fence if I startle them.

Well this year I'm laying down a few extra peaches and cream corn to see if I can get huitlacoche² happening.

While I was ordering things, I also picked up two more varieties of micro dwarf tomatoes. Because apparently eight ISN'T enough.

So now I have two more attempts at brownish micro-dwarf tomatoes: Loi's Baby Tiger³ and Pa's Pride⁴. Both are actually just red with green stripes. I am very sad still that I cannot get the F1 Cocoa into Canada.

The darkest corner of the yard demonstrates perfectly why I put cloches on small plants.

The mycelium from my Garden Giant (Wine Caps; stropharia rugosoannulata) experiment is doing amazingly. I paired it with strawberries this time. It's done amazingly well with raspberries in the past. This is in a pot, and I can replenish the other pots and possibly the yard, depending on how those patches are doing.

I'll have to check how they're doing in the actual yard when there's no snow in that area.
