A museum at night immediately feels different.
MALI in Lima is opening late on Aug 28 with performances, workshops and gallery visits. I like museums when they become somewhere to spend an evening.

MALI in Lima is opening the museum at night on Aug 28 with workshops, live performances and gallery visits.
I like museums more when they feel like places people actually spend an evening in.

Sometimes the best thing an artwork can do is make you notice how quickly you normally look.
Slow looking feels almost rebellious now.

There’s a strange pleasure in seeing an artwork you know only from books or screens.
The real object almost never matches the version your imagination built.
Sometimes that difference is the best part.

Sometimes the best part of an exhibition is the work you nearly walked past.
No famous name. No crowd around it. No expectation.
Just that strange moment when something unexpectedly stops you.
What was your last one?

For complicated museum reasons (and just because I was curious) I was looking in the archive for an exhibition held in 1995. If you were press you could apparently get a 35mm negative as a handout.
If you had questions you could contact "The Information Department".
Good times.

For a brief second you forget that you work in an art museum but then someone rushes through into the office in search of a hidden trapdoor and insists to look under your carpet.

My staff has informed me that if I come to work wearing long pants instead of shorts, they know there's going to be a VIP visitor in the museum and they have to be on their best behavior.

“We whittled it down to seven themes so there would be juxtapositions and dialogue that ultimately would make our visitors think about winter in a different way.”

We’re going to be putting a fossil tortoise on exhibit next year, and I needed to know what to call it on the label. After 3 days, reading 5 technical papers, and spending several hours discussing the problem with 4 other paleontologists at my museum, I can finally confidently say … that we know what question we need to ask to get at an answer.

We’re almost there! “Life in the Slow Lane”, Western Science Center’s exhibit on snails and slugs, opens to the public the Saturday, October 25. Staff and volunteers are hard at work completing the installation. #museum #MuseumLife #scicomm #Exhibitions #snails #malacology

@mike @AdamStuartSmith Yeah, this week I meet with the board executive committee to propose the 2026 budget, present the monthly financial statement, present the report on last month’s fundraiser, and review deferred maintenance projects, correspond with the city & the water district about traffic flow issues, and approve payroll, while trying to finish text & specimen selection for next week’s exhibit opening. Good times! #museumlife

🚚🎨 Oh, the high art of a trucker playing with toy buildings for 21 years finally gets a museum to care—talk about a traffic jam of priorities! 🚦🗽 Forget Picasso; the real masterpiece is plastic skyscrapers on a plywood board. 😂🏙️

Kindergartner at mobile museum: What are you wearing?
Me: A shirt.
Her: That’s a Hawaiian shirt. This isn’t Hawaii!
Me: It’s not just for Hawaii.
Her: You’re not at the beach. Why are you wearing it?
Me: Because it’s hot, and it’s a good shirt for that. Also, I think it’s pretty.
Her: Oh, OK. -
We use these signs at the museum when we pull a specimen from exhibit for study.
Someone on my staff attached this one to my office door. That’s the kind of people I hire, apparently.

Our profession is a weird and rare one. So I love to see a collections manager as the main character in "Egypt Calling" by Paul Kater.
Here's the book: https://paulkater.com/egypt-calling.html
And here's the Registrar Blog post about it: https://world.museumsprojekte.de/egypt-calling-is-out/
Is #DisappearingStautes a hashtag? I feel it should be!

(Das unten sind übrigens die Gänge der alten Depots - but you get the point)

Today at the museum:
While I was in the lab, a visiting researcher was telling an amusing personal story to several of my employees. I wasn’t really listening, but it was convoluted and had something to do with DandD. The she got to the punchline and shouted“Leedsichthys!”
And my employees laughed and laughed!
I love my job!
