Me: My bank changed their online banking and the bill payment confirmation numbers are now like 30 digits long. It's a pain to write them down.

Them: Write them down? Why? You can just look at them in your account.

Me: The point of the confirmation numbers is in case the payment disappears from your account later. You can give them something to prove it happened, something for them to start looking for it from.

Them: You don't trust the bank to get things right?

Me: I'm a software engineer.

Them: Shouldn't you trust them more, then?

Me: ha ha ha no. No no no no no no.

Murphy's law in action:

I ordered a new work laptop on Monday. No shipping information for three days.

I arrive to the office this morning to see it will delivered at home (as I asked, since I work from home 4 days/week) today. The one day I work from the office (not even the closest one), and have client meetings.

Wah it is Monday morning for sure!

Was lucky enough to make it to Delft train station, got my bike, raced to the office. When I arrived, it turns out that all the lifts were out of order, so I had to drag myself, my backpack, my big textbooks, and my sports bag up 5 flights of stairs.

After dropping off everything I didn't need, I wanted to leave my building so I could go to the building where my lecture was, only to find that the *door* was out of order.

Arriving at the lecture hall, I discovered that my Acrobat reader had died, so I had to uninstall and reinstall. That finally done, I had my slides up on the big screen and started my lecture, only for my laptop to crash when I tried to navigate to slide 2.

While it rebooted, I improvised the first part of my lecture without slides. The lecture hall was super cold, so I wanted to get tea, but the machine wasn't working...

After all the train and laptop problems I had on Friday, I can hardly blame Monday morning for this, but still 😳

At the end of the lecture a lot of questions from students that started with "Sorry, you probably covered this, but I missed the first part of the lectures because my train wasn't running..."

Students were cool, tho, so that was nice!

So Im tryna put a pi OS on an sdcard.. stick it in.. and my new laptop says.. no you didnt.. so Ive been playing that game for an hour. It finally saw one and I immediately said Flash Now

I member sayin how easy this was gonna be.. and immediately regretted it after I pushed post lolol

More "fun". Ice fell from the roof and blocked the exit from our grey water system.

No baths, laundry or showers until I thaw that pipe.

Not difficult but we've only had 1 of our 4 Xmas gatherings, lots of prep still to do.

- finally finding a broken transistor and replaced it temporarily.
- mounting back the pcb. Only finding three of the four screws, oh well, it's probably on the floor somewhere.
- plugging in the power to test before finishing up. Sparks flying.
- finding the missing screw lodged in under the power supply, shorting done high voltage parts.
- something's telling me I might need more parts....

Okay... laptop on the podium w/ power, got my slides up, remote pointer good to go, HDMI & audio working, mic check one two - solid, phone ringer off in presenter clock mode, bottle of water. Yep, 30 sec to showtim---- wait, what's this?

I decided to tackle the slow drain on the bathroom sink. After plunging, nope, went for removing the drainpipes and trap. Ewww.

Cleared the drain, but popped the cheap retaining clips and the putty seal because it was piped so poorly.

So now it leaks and wobbles.

There is a #MurphysLaw or something about reading the directions when all else fails. In this case, looking closely at 2 power wiring dongles and realizing one works and is documented both *Upside or Down*. I finally checked why the lights were in different order on the top labels. Turns out, that is correct.
