  1. Thinking today of mob around this continent feeling unnoticed and unwanted (again).

If (almost) any other community had been targeted by an attempted mass murder (likely mass casualty bombing attack) at a gathering marking a sacred day of mourning, do you think it might have made a few more headlines? Might there be a bit more discussion in parliament? Calls for a #RoyalCommission, extensive community discussion of how to address the pervasive #racism very likely at the root of the attack?

There already exists a comprehensive national #antiracism strategy developed over years in consultation with a wide number of relevant experts and stakeholders. It was delivered to the federal government and tabled in parliament over a year ago. The government is yet to respond.

Instead, the duopoly reaches for knee-jerk rushed legislation, atrociously designed, with almost no opportunity for genuine scrutiny, that relies purely on the discredited approach of further #CriminalisationOfDissent Indeed, the existence of these laws is already being weaponised by the #MurdochPress against the very group targeted by the attempted bomb attack, claiming that #Indigenous criticisms of white Australia are racist hate speech and the groups organising the #InvasionDay rallies ought to be proscribed.

    Jesus wept.

  2. Finished reading Earthquake by Niki Savva. A book about politics (specifically the ‘surprise’ losses by conservatives of the last 2 Australian elections), full of quotable quotes. From the Introduction (p 3):
“Journalists… seldom welcome being told how to do their jobs better, especially if they are in the business of dividing, not informing, or if they are loathe to deliver tough messages to leaders they like or their owners support. Blindly partisan media—particularly Sky After Dark and the Murdoch Press—create or nurture the fatal flaws that eventually destroy the very people they are desperate to promote. Along the way they wreck their own credibility. Covering up for conservatives—or anybody else—ensures that everyone loses. Including and especially Australians.”

  3. I get why some are inappropriate (Désirée and Ting Tong) but wasn’t Daffyd played by a gay man (Matt Lucas) and it’s established from the outset that Andy Pipkin is able-bodied and faking his disability? #MurdochPress getting confused again. #LittleBritain

  4. @jhaue It’s infuriating to see the obstruction playbook laid out so plainly. While people lose their homes to fires and floods, the Murdoch press and the business council work tirelessly to block any real change.
Let’s be honest: Murdoch almost certainly has a massive hidden financial stake in keeping fossil fuels alive. We may never know the full extent, but he’s not doing this for the economy - he’s protecting his own fortune.
They are arsonists posing as firefighters, and they belong in the dock for crimes against the future, not on the opinion pages.

  5. Real estate agents are rarely considered the victim. But when it comes to the behemoths of property listings in Australia, estate agents have faced price gouging to the tune of a 5000% price rise over the last 15 years for a 'premium' listing on the market-dominant platform. Without paying for that 'premium' service, properties tend to disappear from search results.

Since the behemoth in question is a subsidiary of (and substantially bankrolling) Australia's dominant media company (i.e. #Murdoch), with a market capitalisation greater than supermarket giant #Coles, here is yet another reason the political duopoly are reluctant to touch structural #TaxJustice issues such as #NegativeGearing or #CapitalGainsTax.

  10. @Qldaah

    Fine article.

    it even quotes Laura,
"t’s a little mystifying how a company that has had to pay out an estimated $2bn – so far – in legal settlements for illegally hacking peoples phones, and other invasions of privacy, has set itself up as an arbiter of journalistic standards."

    We need a #MurdochRoyalCommission.

Like the #WashingtonTimes (started by the #Moonies guy), and the #NewYorkPost (another Murdoch rag), #TheAustralian newspaper is a sham.

  11. @swearyanthony I was actually just thinking a few hours before seeing this: "if I were a #billionaire #DirtyEnergy #plutocrat and I wanted to pollute public discourse, wouldn't I want to set up various awards to give my corporate megaphone (#MurdochPress etc) a veneer of 'quality journalism'? Hmmm,I wonder what the history and funding of the Walkleys is?"

  12. Remember over month ago when their case against #Assange blew up in their face…

… when the #pedophile who was allowed to continue his #pedophilia unfettered allegedly because he allowed his #falseTestimony to the #FBI to be used against Assange…

… when he finally admitted that he perjured himself.

Remember when the #MurdochPress, #ABCNews, #SevenNetwork, #TheGuardian reported on that?

    No?

    CORPORATE MEDIA, NEVER AGAIN!
