Hello! I am Originalbarbas and I have recently joined this server. I am a physicist, currently researching #quantum technologies in #Vigo. I build things with lasers on them, basically. Sometimes I also build the lasers too. I have lived in many places, recently in #Scotland and #Catalunya.
I like #videgames (currently playing through Expedition 33), #tabletopgames, #ttrpgs, #manga, #anime, #books (I read everything that I get my hands into, but I specially like #scifi, #fantasy and #murdermysteries), #comics (european mostly, but also american and basically every genre I can find), #bouldering and recently #aikido and #iaido.

So, one of my guilty pleasures is watching the TV show #HighPotential, which is based on another show (#HPI). #KaitlinOlson (who in real-life is married to #ND #RobMacElhenney) portrays "Morgan," who has an IQ of 160 and notices EVERYTHING! After she oversteps her position as a cleaner, Morgan is hired on as a police consultant -- where she helps to solve murders. Season 2 airs tonight on ABC, and Season 1 is available on Hulu...

Getting back into reading and really missing the Agatha Christie style murder mysteries. Written well enough that reading is easy, seriously intricate plots with a central puzzle to solve, and 8+ suspects.
Modern versions are either sloppily written, break genre conventions too much, or have like 4+1 suspects.

My mother's aunt, Dorothy Cole Meade published 4 books in the late 1930's, all of them murder mysteries. Though I have had the books many years, I only am just reading them now. I think this is a good example of her ability to set the mood on this rubber plantation where murders keep happening.
She lived in Jakarta with her husband who was assigned to the police services there for about 8 years. (He has his own adventurous book!)

I found a show called Elsbeth. It's a spin off of The Good Fight and The Good Wife about the character of the same name. I'm really liking it because it's set up like a Columbo mystery. The audience sees the murderer and how they killed the victim, Elsbeth figures out who early on, and then spends the episode irritating the murderer. It's pretty good so far.

Got a BritBox subscription and have enjoyed rewatching the first few Death in Paradise episodes. Also The IT Crowd—so funny. I’ve found some short horror stories as well. And I’m just now starting Downton Abbey. Dinner was made successfully, started watching #OnlyMurdersInTheBuilding after binging the two #TheAfterparty seasons. It's sad that it was cancelled.
It's difficult to agree on everything with your parents, especially someone as old fashioned and stubborn as my mother (not that I didn't get the stubbornness from her), but #MurderMysteries do have a way of uniting people, don't they?
She also enjoyed #Clue1985 and #MurderByDeath !

Finished watching 'Magpie Murders' on TVNZ+. If you like your murder mysteries the English way, with villages, flashbacks to a nostalgia-soaked 1950's, and twists aplenty, you will enjoy this six-part series.And Lesley Manville, who is plays an editor turned amateur sleuth, is very good. Just a bit twee for me. I'm more of a tartan noir fan myself, preferring more 'grit'.
