Far too many people blame Democrats for what Republicans do.
-
Too many in the media blame the Democrats for what Republicans have done.
Journalists love to act like Democrats are the adults and Republicans are their children, and then blame the Democrats for failing to control the Republicans.
But Democrats do not control what Republicans do.
So why doesn't the media hold Republicans accountable for what Republicans do?

Cue to concern trolls telling you why you should be angry with Trudeau about it in 3... 2 ... 1...
-
It's sure as the sun that when malfeasance by Republicans is reported somebody will join in and give a reason for you to be angry with the Democrats about it.
This is literal troll action and merits an instant block. It's also an expression of Murc's Law and relieves the malignant authoritarians of the responsibility for their awfulness. Don't let them off the hook.

#MurcsLaw in action.
Murcs Law suggests that #Republicans are toddlers who have no control over their own behavior, and #Democrats are the only adults in the room. So when the #GOP does bad stuff, everyone blames the #Dems for not controlling the GOP.
But the GOP are adults (even when they don't act like it), and Democrats have no real control over how Republicans behave. So it is irrational to blame the Dems for GOP behavior.

Looks like #MurcsLaw which assumes that #Republicans are toddlers who have no control over their own behavior, and #Democrats are the only adults in the room. So when the #GOP does bad stuff, everyone blames the #Dems for not controlling the GOP.

Murc's Law. Learn it. You're going to need it in the year ahead.
Don't let fascists rub off their actions on those who try to stop them, and don't let both-siding journalists play false balance with evil.

People who blame Democrats for situations brought about by Republican behavior are following Murc's Law. Murc’s Law is ""the widespread assumption that only Democrats have any agency or causal influence over American politics.'"
So, instead of blaming #Republicans for the political difficulties they cause, they blame #Democrats for failing to control Republicans’ bad behavior.

Remember when people who live in the real world, especially Democrats, pointed out that not getting vaccinated would cause more people do die from Covid?
And that hearing such a thing supposedly upset many Republicans who then decided not to get vaccinated?
Amanda Marcotte wrote about this peculiar phenomenon for Salon last year:
#MurcsLaw was named after a commenter at the blog Lawyers, Guns, and Money who noticed years ago 👉the habitual assumption among the punditry that Republican misbehavior can only be caused by Democrats.
🔸Do Republicans reject climate science? Must be because Democrats failed to persuade them!
🔸Did Republicans pass unpopular tax cuts for the rich? Must be that Democrats didn’t do enough to guide them to better choices!
🔸Do Republicans keep voting for lunatics and fascists? It must be the fault of Democrats for being mean to them!
🔸Even D____ T____’s election was widely blamed on Democrats — who voted against him, to be clear — on the bizarre grounds that Barack Obama should have rolled over and just let Mitt Romney win in 2012 -
Starting to tag these articles and weird takes with #MurcsLaw - something tells me I’ll find these useful material in six months or so..

@bhahne @jensorensen Thanks for sharing, I’ve never heard it named before. We see the same phenomenon from irresponsible right-wing parties in Europe as well. Being able to refer to it by the name “Murc’s Law” is helpful!
Taken to the extreme, this propensity to blame the other side for your own bad behaviour is like the following amazing comic by Matt Bors: “Fault Right”.

Murc’s law is “the widespread assumption that only Democrats have any agency or causal influence over American politics.”
“In combination with BothSidesism, it means the burden of constructive action must always be 100% on Democrats and never, ever, on Republicans,” observed Bruce Baugh in 2018.

Murc's Law? Bothsidesism?
News media bias continuously presents Democrats as culpable for problems Republicans caused.
Big question: how to counter this implicit bias before it ushers in an authoritarian president.

I've seen it so often, but it still bemuses me. Why do people, especially journalists, blame the Democrats for the Republicans' bad behavior? Why don't they blame the Republicans for their bad behavior?
The Democrats are NOT the Republicans parents. You can't blame the Dems when the GOP fucks things up.
Republicans are responsible for their own bad behavior. And they should be treated that way.

Too many journalists follow Murc's Law.
"These journalists seem to believe (perhaps unconsciously) that Republicans have so little control over their own behavior that they cannot be held accountable for their own actions.
So, instead of blaming Republicans for the political difficulties they cause, they blame Democrats for failing to control Republicans’ bad behavior."

Murc's Law in action.
Instead of holding Republicans accountable for their own choices and actions,
journalists consistently blame Democrats for not being able to control Republican choices and actions.Democrats are NOT “the parents,” and Republicans are NOT their “underage children.”
Republicans are responsible for their own actions.
Journalists should make that clear.#MurcsLaw #Journalism #Journalists #News #Media #Democrats #Republicans #GOP #Meme
