Forget Privacy

“Hi, everyone!” she began, a twenty-something in a pink cardigan sitting two tables from me. She looked at her laptop screen intensely, smiling and alert.

Everyone with a post-pandemic office job knows this means a video meeting is about to start. I had quite looked forward to enjoying my salad in silence, but I guess this is the risk you take every time you leave the apartment! At least it was better than the time a guy had taken off his shoes at a café, resting his sweaty feet on a chair, all to the delight of the neighbouring tables’ lunching guests.

The girl went on to describe in detail a work event she was organising. Everyone in the café now knew its time, place, and even the companies attending (including a very large bank.) She gave the full names of some people who’d cancelled, and mentioned 12 had signed up, but their goal was 30. They could still do it, she said with a smile.

Just as I thought the call was about to end, she mentioned feedback. Her on-call audience wanted to know more, and so did we reluctant eavesdroppers!

Their last event’s feedback had mostly been negative. One person hadn’t understood that they were meant to dress up for dinner, so this time, she’d spelled it out on the invitation. She rolled her eyes and laughed, nodding at whatever her coworkers were commenting. Other complaints had involved the restaurant being too loud and someone not liking the hotel.

After finishing her call, she was still smiling. She took out her mobile phone and started scrolling.

End of story! Although, it does remind me of a post I saw somewhere, saying why don’t we dress for the occasion anymore, as a form of respect? What these two instances have in common is the respect part. Take into consideration the people around you, as well as the people who trust you to keep their information private. You wouldn’t want it to end up online!

I stole a pen from the post office.

I thought it was mine, but then
when I needed to cross something
off my shopping list I reached
into my pocket and found
two.

Yours, and its identical twin
with the good clicker
who lives on my fridge.

I'm going back this afternoon
so I could return it
but that would be weird
so I won't.
