Very proud of the Philadelphia Pranking Authority a Comic Brigade that I founded 14 yrs ago. Even TV commentator Larry said how much he liked them and their Zoo Escape theme. And they were the first group up, too!

Apparently, the broadcast has been banished to #MeTV. I guess all those men in dresses, feathers, wigs, and makeup is too much for impressionable children. 😅

Our local #EastKent #MummersPlay was performed by the #BoydenGate #Mummers again this Boxing Day, followed by the #Wantsum #Morris men. A reasonable audience, with many ramblers and dogs as usual.

The first time I ever got to go trick or treating was when I was 21 years old. My roommate Viki went as a vampire and I went as her victim in a long white nightgown and a bloody neck. The only place we went to, the woman said, "Aren't you too old for this?" It crushed all my joy. I didn't get to go as a kid because I grew up in a Jehovah's Witness family.
In downtown Fredericton there's an old cemetery that everyone uses as a shortcut. That Halloween night, the gates were open, so Viki and I walked in. We passed a watchman who said hi. But when we got to the other side, the gate was locked.
We turned around to exit the way we came in, only to find that gate was locked, too. The watchman had shut us in!
We wandered around looking for a way out, and then city workers saw us and started yelling at us for breaking into the cemetery. We explained what had happened and asked for them to let us out. They didn't have keys. So they pulled their truck up to the cast iron fence and helped pull us over the fence.
Who else gets locked into an old cemetery on their first Hallowe'en? My nightgown got ripped, but it was totally worth it. It brought back all the joy that had been sucked away by the mean woman telling me I was too old for trick or treating.
FWIW, the last time I went trick or treating was when I was in my forties. If mummering were a thing here, I'd do that, too.

A 'Lost' Christmas Custom of the North:
"They haven't gone guising here for a long time," said the old folk of Cambo in 1922.
"There was no 'guisering' at Christmas 1903," wrote Hastings Neville in Ford in his notes of that year.
'Guising' (apparently derived from 'disguising', referring to the costumes and masks worn) was the local version of the Mummers Plays that exist elsewhere.
In both Ford, in the far north of the county, and Cambo, 40 miles to the south, we have records of the old custom, which happened in the days leading up to Christmas. Both apparently involved the key character of a doctor, but in Ford, Revd Neville has preserved the entirety of the script, including 'King George', a young hero, Goliath, and a battle, and finishing with the rhyme:
"Your bottles are full of whisky,
Your barrels are full of beer,
I wish you a Merry Christmas
And a Happy New Year."Neville puts the dying of the custom down to the reduction of young people in the villages in an age of increased mechanisation and rural depopulation. But when I was growing up in Northumberland in the 1990s, 'guising' was what we called Trick or Treating at Halloween! Maybe it hasn't so much died as shifted.
