The #US #empire, or #hegemony, has long been in decline, or rather undergoing a metamorphosis. What is arising is an empire of stateless #MultinationalCorporations, many of whom rose to prominence on the back of the US #economy but few of whom are now confined to its shores. They can still be reined in, but it will require the cooperation of all the world's large economies, especially the #EU and #China.

According to a report, five of the world's largest #banks are accused of " #greenwashing " their involvement in the destruction of the #Amazon. The report highlights that their environmental and social guidelines do not cover more than 70% of the #rainforest. These banks are alleged to have financed #oil and #gas companies with billions of dollars, supporting projects that harm the Amazon, destabilise the climate, and threaten the land and livelihoods of Indigenous peoples.

Almost three years after 140 countries struck a deal to close glaring loopholes in the international system, some major economies will from January start to apply an effective #tax rate of at least 15 per cent on #corporate #profits. Under a series of interlocking rules, if profit by a #multinational is taxed below this rate in one country, other countries will be able to charge a top-up levy. The OECD, which drove the reforms, estimates it will increase annual tax revenue by as much as 9 per cent, or $220bn worldwide. #MultinationalCorporations

The #EU Tax Observatory has published their "Global Tax Evasion Report 2024". It is available for download here -
https://www.taxobservatory.eu/One highlight (lowlight) of their report is this - "Finding #2: A large amount of profit shifting to tax havens, with no discernable effect of policies so far - A persistently large amount of profits is shifted to tax havens: $1 trillion in 2022. This is the equivalent of 35% of all the profits booked by multinational companies outside of their headquarter country. The corporate tax revenue losses caused by this shifting are significant, the equivalent of nearly 10% of corporate tax revenues collected globally. U.S. multinationals are responsible for about 40% of global profit shifting, and Continental European countries appear to be the most affected by this evasion."
The attached graph also says a lot - in 1985 the average corporate tay rate in the EU was 50%. In 2020, it was 21%! For another thing, there is *no* difference between the corporate tax rate in the #US and in the #EU. Both 21%.

why might that be? you ask:
As the #energy market is currently demonstrating, the Govt. has no interest in curbing 'super-profits' & indeed is happy to facilitate that by containing wage growth across the economy (not least by clamping down on #unions)....
Its all justified by the priority given to rentier element(s) in our dysfunctional #capitalism!
