  1. "If you reject the very idea that problems are systemic, then you have no use for institutions, and institutions are the only effective response to systemic problems. That primes you to reject the unsatisfying answers of science ("If you don't want to get cancer, regulate corporations and cars that dump carcinogens into the environment") in favor of individual solutions, which are, inevitably, products that someone can sell you, from alkaline water to electrosmog-shielding hats.

Rejecting systemic explanations also primes you to believe in conspiracy theories. This is why antisemitism is called "the socialism of fools": rather than fighting against the system of primacy of extractive finance capital over the productive economy, you spend all your time locked in a one-sided battle with an imaginary cabal of evil Jewish bankers.

Conspiratorial beliefs make you especially vulnerable to a grifter's sales pitch that goes like this: "Of course they don't want you to drink raw milk, otherwise you'd be as powerful as they are." Variations on this theme include "buy the miracle anti-aging cure that only billionaires are privy to" and "buy a bump stock before the conspiracy to take away your right to self-defense makes them illegal."
    (...)
Many people have observed that one of the reasons conservatives govern so badly is that they campaign on the idea that "governments are wasteful and inefficient," which means that if they run the government in a wasteful and inefficient fashion, they only prove their point. In the same fashion: right-wing grifters who pitch you on the idea an evil cabal has rigged the game, and then take your money and rip you off, are demonstrating the correctness of their pitch."

  2. "MLMs prey on the poor and desperate: women, people of color, people in dying small towns and decaying rustbelt cities. It's not just that these people are desperate – it's that they only survive through networks of mutual aid. Poor women rely on other poor women to help with child care, marginalized people rely on one another for help with home maintenance, small loans, a place to crash after an eviction, or a place to park the RV you're living out of.

In other words, people who lack monetary capital must rely on social capital for survival. That's why MLMs target these people: an MLM is a system for destructively transforming social capital into monetary capital. MLMs exhort their members to mine their social relationships for "leads" and "customers" and to use the language of social solidarity ("women helping women") to wheedle, guilt, and arm-twist people from your mutual aid network into buying things they don't need and can't afford.

But it's worse, because what MLMs really sell is MLMs. The real purpose of an MLM sales call is to convince the "customer" to become an MLM salesperson, who owes you a share of every sale they make and is incentivized to buy stock they don't need (from you) in order to make quotas. And of course, their real job is to sign up other salespeople to work under them, and so on.

An MLM isn't just a pathogen, in other words – it's a contagion. When someone in your social support network gets the MLM disease, they don't just burn all their social ties with you and the people you rely on – they convince more people in your social group to do the same."

  7. A memoir from a former MLM rep. The insight into MLMs was interesting as was reading about a life so different from my own. The research however was surface level as was the reflection on her own privilege. 8. Every multi-level marketing (MLM) company is kind of like a turducken: a pyramid scheme inside a cult inside a fraud. #MultiLevelMarketing #antiMLM #cults #fraud

  9. I just came across this quite by accident. It is quite lengthy but informative. It could apply to #religion and #religious groups / #cults, #MultiLevelMarketing (#MLM) organizations, or nowadays to #politics and various #political groups, especially the #Christofascists and #ChristianNationalism and similar #falseChristianity groups that seem to be taking over the #GOP / #Republicans in the USA. Young people in particular need to be informed about the dangers of such groups, since they prey on the young, who don't have enough life experience to have been exposed to such groups and therefore have no idea what they are getting into until it's too late.

That means that the people who try to con you are almost always getting conned themselves. Think of #MultiLevelMarketing (#MLM) scams. My forthcoming novel *The Bezzle* opens with a baroque and improbable fast-food #Ponzi in the town of Avalon on the island of Catalina, founded by the chicle monopolist William Wrigley Jr:

  11. #MLM #PyramidScheme #MultiLevelMarketing #Capitalism: "Officially, of course, a multilevel marketing company is distinct from an actual pyramid scheme. But, as longtime MLM critic Robert FitzPatrick argues, the boundary between “legitimate” multilevel marketing and straightforward fraud is porous at best. As per FitzPatrick, the US government defines the legal variety as “a type of enterprise in which participants can earn money from their own retail sales and from commission overrides based on the retail sales of other participants they recruit in a genealogical chain.” The problem, as he observes, is that the FTC has never actually identified a single MLM company that meets such a definition. “Since,” FitzPatrick writes, “no one in MLM actually does gain or could gain sustainable profit from retailing, no one also gains income from retail sales of those recruited. The legitimate, retail-based MLM is as real as a Unicorn.”

In truth, it’s hard to think of a better microcosm for capitalism than multilevel marketing, or a more apt depiction of why its foundational mythology is so obviously a fraud. In the world of MLMs, all of us are just temporarily embarrassed millionaires. With sufficient effort and the application of vigorous work ethic, anyone and everyone can be their own boss while spreading the good word far and wide so that others can rise too. According to MLM’s oleaginous prosperity gospel, sales reps get to help others by selling useful products and enriching themselves, engaging in a perfect symbiosis of enlightened self-interest. Those who lose money or complain are, by extension, either lazy or otherwise personally defective."

They would do well to outlaw money in the form it is today though. If people really want a #FairGo they'd do well to imprison the Federal Reserve actors.

They should reinforce the "hard money" quote in the #Constitution. #HardMoney being gold or a limited crypto like bitcoin.
