CW: Magic the Gathering whining
It might be time for me to put #MagicTheGathering away for a year or two. My draft+sealed win rate since the start of #MTGWOE is about 30% and it just hasn't been fun for quite a while. (I've been playing a bunch of #MarvelSnap this fall and enjoying it a lot more than Magic.)
I'd say it's because of the fast limited formats - and I do hate the fast formats we've had this year - but I haven't been doing well at #MTGKTK either.
My suspicion is that the much faster pace of formats being solved in the 17Lands era means that even the bad players on #MagicArena are consistently better than I am these days, and whatever edge I thought I had in playing the games (IMO my strongest part of limited) is being wiped out by my relative deficiencies in drafting and deck construction.
(More broadly, regardless of the reason, I think the player base is getting better and I'm not. And that's not a recipe for me staying in the game much longer.)

Just experienced the pleasure of drawing eight cards over the course of two turns off of Necropotence in #MTGWOE draft. Felt like I was using a cheat code.

I think the "problem" a lot of people are running into drafting Wilds of Eldraine is falling into one of three distinct groups:
1. Taking a bunch of creatures which are big or do stuff (but fail to include any means of protecting them).
2. Taking a bunch of spells which improve board state (but fail to have any clear way to win the game).
3. Taking Enchanting Tales cards which have cult followings (but don't work in limited).

Ran it back with another UR deck and also went 0-3.
So, started the day at Silver 4 and ended the day at Silver 4.
Overall win rate in draft so far is 22.2%.
"WOE" is definitely the right abbreviation for this set!

After 4 straight releases with serialized cards in Collector Boosters, #WotC decided to forego them in #WildsofEldraine. As a result, multiple online retailers are already running markdowns on them.
This speaks to two things WotC has been very slow to learn:
1. Don't start something unless you plan on continuing to do it.
2. Don't stop something you've already established a pattern of doing.
This seems like a mistake they just can't stop making... 🤦

#MtGWOE has been out long enough for people to have formed some impressions by now. How are people finding it?
I haven't had time to draft it enough yet, but I'm pleasantly surprised by how many cards I'm using to brew in Standard. Nothing seems over-the-top broken, but there's still things to experiment with even without rotation this year.

I’m really struggling with #MTGWOE draft so far:
- 0-3 with an admittedly sketchy BGw deck
- 2-3 with GW with not enough removal
- 1-3 with BR with lots and lots of removalNow working through a RW deck which didn’t really come together (mainly wanted more burn spells and more Celebration enablers): https://sealeddeck.tech/Ip86T8CF2R
I feel like my problem so far is that I’m drafting very midrange decks without enough synergy. Often I have some Roles, some Food, a little Bargain, but the whole isn’t much more than the sum of its parts.
On the other hand, I’ve also lost games because I got run over by aggro, and because I got outclassed by giant creatures.
It could also just be bad luck in a small sample size, of course!
Or maybe I should be drafting Blue. 🤪

Just did my last #MTGWOE draft. Drafted the deck that’s been completely locking me out of every other game I tried to play in the format (BR oops all removal) and still got completely dumpstered.
It’s like everyone else is opening a different set, where all their cards take out at minimum two of mine.
This set is miserable to play. Looks like I’m skipping limited until the next set comes out. Hopefully it’s playable.

I’m hoping to play more than this during Wilds of Eldraine. I should at least be able to make silver in limited, and hopefully will find some standard decks I enjoy.
Interesting that I’m still in the top half of (effectively) the most active players with these numbers.

Just in case anyone's interested, Star City Games is currently trying to run buyouts on the Walking Dead Secret Lair parallels from Wilds of Eldraine. They know the pull rates are low, and are now trying to corner the market.
Really not cool that they're doing this by strongarming out of the market smaller shops who are actually trying to sell to PLAYERS... 😒
(And yes, I have the invoice to prove it.)

Update: 5-14, still yet to face a non-black deck. In this last attempt the one game I won was the only time any of my non-land permanents lasted until my next turn.
#MTGWOE limited is a miserable experience. Tons of fun looking cards/archetypes that are all instantly destroyed by the set that is apparently just all removal.
#MagicTheGathering last four releases were: non-set, premium price set, super premium price set, unplayable set... maybe they’ll release something playable some day.

Heute das erste Mal selbst #MTGWOE gespielt und "irgendwas mit Rakdos" aus meinem Sealed Pool gemacht.
"Lord Skitter, Sewer King" ist jetzt schon einer meiner Lieblinge. 😀
Auch gut: mehrere Turns kaum was machen, ggf. dem Gegner was removen und dann "Virtue of Persistence" droppen -> instant concede bei quasi leerem Battlefield. 🤘Hat gleich ein 7:2 geholt, so kann das gerne weitergehen 😂

So far I’m 4-11 in #MTGWOE limited. Set has a lot of stuff that looks fun, but if you try to do any of those things you just get stomped into the ground by rakdos aggro. I haven’t played a single game yet where my opponent didn’t run black.
I’ll give it a bit more of a shot, but this set might just be one that I skip limited on.

Mulligan, Mulligan, Mulligan + Mana Flood (12 lands, 4 spells) didn't help.
But it was routinely smoked on card quality, too.
Looks like it could be a lo-o-ong draft format for me...

For those looking forward to #WildsofEldraine to get Universes Within versions of the Walking Dead Secret Lair cards:
They are not being inserted at the same rate as the Street Fighter, Stranger Things, and Transformers cards.
Those were inserted in Set Boosters at a rate of 1:8 packs (essentially, they replaced 50% of 'The List' cards). Walking Dead parallels are inserted at a rate of about 1:72 packs.
The prices will not stay low.

How many former players do you know who left because games took too long? or because cards weren't powerful enough?
The vast majority of players want social interactions when they play the game. They become disenfranchised when one of two things happen: 1) It gets so expensive that they just can't justify continuing to play; or 2) The game becomes all about huge bombs with gimmicky mechanics and building a deck feels more like gambling than playing a game.

Every time I watch Wizards of the Coast employee play Magic, it becomes more obvious why the current state of the game is as awful as it is. They're all so wrapped up in making stories and creating "OMGLOLWOW!!!1!" moments that they can't begin to fathom what would actually be fun for the average person to play.
If they spent a couple sets focusing on making the game last longer -- rather than being over on turn 3 -- more players would return to it.

The card Cooped Up is maybe slightly better than similar cards in other sets: You can activate its Exile ability, and then respond to it with an instant-speed Bargain spell and sac it for value.
There are 8 instant-speed Bargain spells in #MTGWOE, 2 of which are white.

Having ingested the full set gallery for #MTGWOE , I have to say I'm very impressed with how Roles, Food, Rats, Celebration and Bargain all interrelate and support each other. This looks like a very cool and intricate draft environment.
How are people feeling about the mental overhead on Roles? I only really draft on Arena these days, so I expect to get used to the helpful popup reminding me what each role does, but how onerous is it going to feel in paper?
