  1. Wait! What? Big WordPress hack?

    *scurries off to check*

🤣 As far as I can tell, no one hacked my oubliette.

That doesn't surprise me at all: Vogonish poetry and #MTGO stuff does not a readable blog make, and I'm probably very close to the bottom of the list as far as traffic goes. It makes no sense to hack my steaming pile of poo.

If you MUST look (I wouldn't recommend it. You'll be disappointed.) you can find it at blippytheslug.wordpress.com/

  3. CW: MORE THOUGHTS ON THE BONG SIGNAL

Way back when, at the birdsite, is when I started doing the Big Ben thing; 10, 12 years, at least. I know I was doing it when I was running tournaments on #MTGO, so at least that long. I don't remember exactly.

I didn't add hashtags until soon after I got here (#HephalumpWorld), and didn't stop tagging Big Ben until just a few months ago.

Boosting the Big Ben post has always been a habit, to show what I'm responding to.

    Habits can change.

Moxfield allows you to search for decks which contain a specific card, and allows you to filter by format. If you have a pet card or a specific group of cards which fit your gameplay style, you can set the format and search for decks containing it/them.

For instance, here are the results for Empty the Warrens for the main budget formats:

    Pauper: moxfield.com/decks/public?form

    Pauper EDH: moxfield.com/decks/public?form

    Penny Dreadful: moxfield.com/decks/public?form

  10. Today's unbannings were Mind's Desire in #Legacy, and Preordain in #Modern.

I have a few copies of Mind's Desire in my store which were available at $0.99-$1.49. None sold in the hour after the unbanning was announced.

I had several dozen copies of Preordain at available at $0.99-$4.59. They nearly sold out within the hour (currently have 2 copies remaining).

Yes, Preordain is a good card, but it has been printed WAY MORE than Mind's Desire.

  12. It's interesting that #Modern seems to be the single-biggest driver of the MTG secondary market. Changes in meta and legality in Legacy/Standard almost never have any effect on card prices, but changes in Modern are very often met with HUGE swings.

It's making more sense why LOTR was direct-to-Modern, and also why it will likely become the best-selling set ever (usurping Modern Horizons II; a fact which caught me completely off-guard).

  16. @Pixel_Lich Nice! I can imagine that being a refreshing change from e.g. Standard or Modern. (Which I've never really done in paper myself, I couldn't bring myself to spend that much money on cards, but I used to get into it on #MTGO for a while)

  18. My favorite scene in The Lord of the Rings was when the 2-4 bands of travelers who were each carrying copies of The One Ring met on a battlefield and started summoning orcs and horrors to fight beside them to try and kill the other group(s). Then, when all but one group was destroyed, everything blinked out of existence until 2-4 new bands of travelers suddenly appeared out of the ether and began engaging in the same behavior.

  19. When Terisian Mindbreaker is played on MTGA/MTGO, there should be a secret function that pops up, boots the player, blocks their IP address, and deletes their account.

Each LGS/event should also have a good squad on premises during competitive play, so that when anyone plays Terisian Mindbreaker, they can beat the player who played it, forcibly sterilize them, and tattoo "SCUM" in large letters on their forehead.

  20. If you play Phyrexian Obliterator in any deck, in any format, I hope you are subjected to repeated non-consensual violence.

And no, I'm not even slightly exaggerating.

You are a horrible person, and you deserve all the trauma you get in life.

  21. I think one of the best ways that the Magic: The Gathering Lord of the Rings set is paying homage to to the original stories is that by the time I get halfway through reading most of the cards, I've lost interest and moved on to something else.

  22. CW: I asked ChatGPT to evaluate the rules text of Shelob, Child of Ungoliant

Even the "dumb robot" was able to see what most people are missing:

The food tokens lose all their card types, but they still retain the deceased creatures' abilities, both active and passive.

This isn't just "another spider commander". This is a legitimate powerhouse around which you can build a deck.

  23. It's interesting that WotC takes the approach of only banning cards which create unfair advantages at the hyper-competitive level, rather than cards which make the game less fun overall.

What is even the point of asking "Did you have fun?" after games on MTGA which had competitively-unbalanced cards? If they're not going to use that information to make changes, it's cruel to even tease us with the notion that our opinions matter.

  27. It's worth noting that all three of these bans are from one set (Neon Dynasty) which is likely out of print and is already in limited supply at most distributors. Its sealed product is also selling at higher prices than any of the previous six Standard sets, or any set since. These bannings were based as much on WotC's concerns about profit margins as anything. There are a half-dozen cards in ONE which are currently more dangerous than Reckoner Bankbuster or Invoke Despair.

    #MTGA #MTG #MTGO

  28. Reckoner Bankbuster was a stupid card from the beginning. If it were Mythic, it should have been 3 mana and tied to Azorius. As a rare, it should have been at least 4.

Fable of the Mirror-Breaker was a problem within 2 weeks of being released. That it lasted this long is laziness on WotC's part.

Invoke Despair is an issue, but it's no more dangerous to any format than is Portal to Phyrexia when colorless mana is as easy to generate as it is currently.

    #MTG #MTGA #MTGO #MagicTheGathering

  29. Today's B&R announcement does nothing to make the game more fun. It may address some of the slight statistical advantages at the hyper-engineered top ranks of competitive play, but that's it. The average person logging into MTGA/MTGO, or showing up at their LGS for organized play will still face the same half-dozen decks. The decks which ensure the game is decided by turn 3 and in the outcome is entirely based on who got the 4 cards they needed to win first.

"While opinions on the greatest Magic: The Gathering card may vary, Vizzerdrix stands out as a powerful contender. With its impressive 6/6 stats for just seven mana, it offers a cost-efficient threat. Its versatility across formats and potential for game-changing plays make Vizzerdrix a compelling candidate for the title of the greatest MTG card of all time."

I just downloaded #Arena. I guess I'll see if my old account is still there...
