Nobody is really surprised that the MacOS 26.0.1 firmware image of the about to be released MacBook Pro #M5 reveals that Memory Integrity Enforcement (#MIE) on top of the ARM64 Enhanced Memory Tagging Extension (#EMTE) is used. Extremely surprising is however that Apple is now shipping the Secure Kernel (#SK) and #ExclaveCore / #ExclaveOS with MacOS. This means Apple's newest security boundary #Exclaves has finally arrived in MacOS."

it may never come to web browsers because of JIT

which means that Lockdown Mode is still very important if you want to defend against web browser based attacks (if you browse the web from a "secure" iPad)

or maybe some theoretical iPadOS browser that is javascript-free (?) with the MTE flags enabled, but yeah...

In some regions exploits are very broadly deployed on the internet, to target people looking for political activism resources. And journalists, lawyers, and politicians are all regularly targeted by mercenary spyware as well.

The exploit chains used by mercenary spyware are also the same as the ones used by commercial spyware and data hacking kits, like Cellebrite and GrayKey. These tools are often in the hands of low-level law enforcement employees or even outside of government, and are regularly abused.

If these threats could cause you significant harm, this may well be a great reason to upgrade your phone.

My understanding is that it improves upon the probabilistic protection of the original #MTE to make the probability of a successful attack even lower. I'm a little sad they didn't go for a more deterministic approach like #CHERI but still a cool development in real hardware.
