R to @ECDC_EU: First instances of confirmed transmission of #MPXV clade I among close contacts of imported cases within the EU/EEA have been reported by Germany & Belgium.
ECDC is in contact with public health authorities in these countries regarding this development.

In late July 24, #Burundi, #Rwanda, & #Uganda reported confirmed cases of mpox, with some cases having linkages to DRC. Rwanda & Uganda have confirmed these cases are due to clade I MPXV; in Burundi, clade-specific testing is underway, but cases are presumed to be clade I due to DRC’s proximity. Mpox is not known to be endemic in these countries.

Great work on #mpox #virus ( #MonkeyPox) from Lisa Bauer, Debby van Riel, & Oliver Harschnitz:"We found that MPXV infects and replicates more efficiently in astrocytes and microglia compared to cortical neurons, which unlike glial cells showed activation of distinct antiviral programs that may confer differential susceptibility to #MPXV."

MPXV in the air had increased considerably on Aug 8, with 57% of positive samples containing more than 100 genomes per [cubic meter]; this date coincided with the peak incidence of mpox in Spain."The authors suggest that air sampling might be a useful surveillance method.

Sanchiz et al, 2023: Air sampling at Madrid gay clubs found #monkeypox virus (#MPXV) DNA in sex rooms and bar areas. 57% of 7 samples collected at the peak incidence of #MPX had >100 genomes per meter cubed. Samples were not tested for infectiousness.
