I have an extensive collection of vinyls and their respective FLAC backups. I just noticed that my go-to music player (Melody, written by Artem Anufrij) is some 6 years old.

Learning Vala now, so that I can update it to Gtk4 and add a couple features I'm craving for.

Well, the iPod is officially a bust, so I must search for other avenues.

My choices of #MP3player / #DAP are then:

- Ultra low-cost machine, with quite possibly VERY crappy sound for under €40;

- Proper DAP that's over €100 with some being able to run #Rockbox as an alternative firmware. Currently eyeing the #HIFIWalkerH2.

- Weirdly enough, some retro consoles like the #R36S and its variants, which can also run Rockbox as an app.

So, Fedi, what say you on this topic? What do you suggest?

Just found my 2nd ever #MP3Player while checking/emptying "random old crap" boxes.

The first one was a 128MB unit that failed after an airplane flight to the UK after approx. 1/2 year of use.

This bad boy features a whopping 1GB of storage. At some point the battery compartment failed so I modded it to take a bigger AA battery. The USB cover features slots for a cable tie to route the headphone wires out of the pocket without a mess.

The soft touch paint turned into a horrible goo and collected a lot of dust.

This thing was in daily use for approx. 8 years.

Edit: just checked the online manual. No date, but it mentions Windows98SE. Do you remember installing drivers for USB mass storage devices? That was wild...

For what I can only attribute to my phone guzzling down power even with local-only apps for music and podcasts, I, a terminally-online person that is rarely more than 1m away from a PC or smartphone with a constant Internet connection, and even self-host my own services, am considering... stepping down a notch and move to a more... "analog" world.

Actually, analog is the wrong word. "#Disconnected" might be a better one.

So I'm wondering if I could actually make a switch to something like a Nokia 7110 and an #MP3player.

Weirdly enough, MP3 players these days are apparently either cheap and crappy, or expensive and iffy, or VERY expensive, or expensive Android mini tablets with barely any battery life...

So I just put a bid on a modded 120GB iPod Classic I can slap Rockbox on, hopefully I win it.

If anyone in the EU has an #iPod they don't want that's compatible with #rockbox, please let me know!

I'm still using iRiver MP3 player from these times and nowadays I found that it is a very liberating experience — to just put the device on the table after listening the music and don't worry about necessity to charge it, about battery level, etc. I'm able just to pick it up when I want to listen music again and it will be ready to serve me.

Wabans Electronics will einen #Opensource #MP3 Player auf den Markt bringen und hat ein #Youtube Video veröffentlicht in dem sie uns um Ideen was das Ding können soll bitten. Mein Vorschlag ist M.2 und Sata, weil die nur MicroSD machen wollen. Bin gespannt ob das was wird, aber wenn ich da nicht mindestens 4TB Speicher reinpacken kann ist das nix für mich.
Wenn die alle Vorschläge umsetzen wird das eine Höllenmaschine!

Unser guter alter #mp3player (kein Bluetooth, nur Speicherkarte, als Stromversorgung der Akku eines alten Nokia-Handys) wurde langsam "heiser".

Eine gute Dosis #Kontaktspray in die kleine Öffnung neben dem Lautstärkeregler hat ihn kuriert. 🙂

How great is that? Just copy any audio format decoder as ".codec" file, and your device will be able to play those files. 😎 🎵

This folder is on a 15y old mp3player, now playing also m4a, flac, opus, etc. (original firmware: mp3+wma only)
