  1. Better than Streaming: Watch out for Godzilla Minus Zero in cinemas this November

Welcome back fellow geeks and film buffs!

Great news for those who love giant monster movies and wild cinematic fantasies! The new movie Godzilla Minus Zero will be released in cinemas worldwide this November starting with Japan!

Godzilla Minus Zero is the sequel to the excellent Godzilla Minus One (2023) and Takashi Yamazaki is back as director, writer and head of visual effects. Key members of the cast from the 2023 movie are returning as well. Feeling excited? Watch the official trailer below and pay attention to the details.

    https://youtu.be/kw0YhiqOPFg?si=6uIOoWyYINV3Ek7D

The official description of Godzilla Minus Zero from Toho is as follows: Godzilla Minus Zero is the highly anticipated new film from director, screenwriter and with VFX by Takashi Yamazaki, who won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects for Godzilla Minus One.

The synopsis: War reduced Japan to zero, and Godzilla plunged it into minus. Two years have passed since then, and the country has faced agonizing struggles to achieve recovery and finally reclaim its daily life.

Just as humanity managed to cling to a hard-won peace, a new threat strikes, crushing hope in an instant.

There is no third time. Everything ends here.

Godzilla Minus One will open in cinemas in more than twenty countries on November 6, 2026. (photo source – Toho)

With regards to the scheduled global cinematic release, Godzilla Minus Zero will play in cinemas on the following dates and nations:

    November 3, 2026 – Japan

November 4, 2026 – Belgium, France, Indonesia, Laos, Luxembourg, Philippines, Thailand,

November 5, 2026 – Albania, Argentina, Aruba, Australia, Bolivia, Bonaire, Bosnia, Brazil, Brunei, Central America, Chile, Colombia, Croatia, Curacao, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ecuador, Germany, Greece, Greenland, Hungary, Kosovo, Malaysia, Mexico, Montenegro, Netherlands, New Zealand, North Macedonia, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, Serbia, Singapore, Slovakia, Switzerland, Uruguay, Venezuela,

November 6, 2026 – Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Mozambique, Norway, Poland, Romania, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, Turkey, United Kingdom (UK), United States of America, Vietnam, Zambia,

    November 12, 2026 – Italy

November 20, 2026 – Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan,

Looks like a tiny piece of Godzilla was recovered somehow.

I am glad that my native Philippines will have Godzilla Minus Zero officially screened on the 4th of November. Godzilla Minus One’s screening in the Philippines was limited to a film festival and I had to import the 4K Blu-ray copy of it. To be clear, I enjoyed watching Godzilla Minus One and remember the very end of its footage, I am not surprised that Godzilla Minus Zero materialized. With the sequel coming out in a few months’ time, I am eager to find out what will happen next in the story about a struggling Japan and what will happen next to the core characters.

Already Toho confirmed that Godzilla Minus Zero was filmed for IMAX. That said, I will make an effort to see it in a local IMAX cinema here in the Philippines.

Right now, Godzilla Minus Zero is my most anticipated movie this year. Do you plan to watch it? Let me know in the comments below.

  8. Better than Streaming: Free Movie Admission For Senior Citizens In Muntinlupa City Restored

Welcome back fellow geeks and film buffs!

In the progressive city of Muntinlupa in the Philippines, the City Government led by Mayor Ruffy Biazon formally signed the memorandum of agreement (MOA) with three cinema operators – Alabang Town Center, Festival Mall and SM Center Muntinlupa – granting free admission for senior citizens with limits starting July 6, 2026, according to a Manila Bulletin news report.

This move effectively restored the movie benefit of senior citizens in the city. Regarding the limitations of the benefit, free movie admissions will happen once-a-week, either on Monday or Tuesday.

To put things in perspective, posted below is the excerpt from the Manila Bulletin news report. Some parts in boldface…

Senior citizens in Muntinlupa will once again be able to watch movies for free starting July 6, following the signing of an agreement between the city government and cinema operators.

On July 1, Muntinlupa Mayor Ruffy Biazon signed a memorandum of agreement with SM Center Muntinlupa, Festival Mall, and Alabang Town Center granting senior citizens free movie admission.

Biazon said bona fide residents of Muntinlupa can avail themselves of the free movie admission once a week, either on Monday or Tuesday.

In May, Biazon signed City Council Resolution No. 2026-333, which authorized him to enter into the agreement with cinema operators in the city.

The resolution stated: “Senior Citizens of Muntinlupa City are given preferential attention and priority to enjoy additional grants of incentives as an expression of gratitude for their invaluable contribution to the progress and prosperity of Muntinlupa City.”

This latest development will eventually attract more senior citizens to enter the specific commercial places that have cinemas. Festival Mall’s modern cinemas are located at the 4th floor (AKA 3rd level) while those at Alabang Town Center are on the ground floor. Watching movies on the big screen inside the cinema is more immersive and clearly better than streaming.

Streaming extremists who oppose cinema viewing cannot argue with the fact that almost all movies released from long ago were made for the big screen inside the theaters, not for smartphones, not for laptops and not for TV sets. I should state that senior citizens can enjoy spending time inside commercial joints socializing with friends after watching movies, and it definitely is not ideal for them to spend all their free time inside their homes. There is the human need for the temporary change of place and it is only the cinema that can provide them the immersive, big screen entertainment experience.

  10. Better than Streaming: Fire and Ice 4K Blu-ray Coming Out On June 30

Welcome back fellow geeks, Blu-ray collectors and movie buffs!

If you love the animated works of director Ralph Bakshi (American Pop, The Lord of The Rings) and the artworks of Frank Frazetta (Conan The Barbarian, Vampirella), then you should watch out for their memorable collaboration in ultra high-definition as the 1983 animated movie Fire and Ice will be released on 4K Blu-ray format on June 30, 2026, exclusively via MVDshop.

Fire and Ice 4K Blu-ray cover has the same classic artwork of the official movie poster.

With a story co-written by Bakshi and Frazetta and the screenplay done by comic book legends Gerry Conway and Roy Thomas, Fire and Ice is the story of a young warrior named Larn who wants revenge against the evil queen Juliana and her son Nekron. Larn also has the task to rescue their kidnapped princess Teegra. For your interest and reference, watch the classic movie trailer below.

    https://youtu.be/0u64CLs_yb4?si=Ys4OO4sKopU64-98

Fire and Ice 4K Blu-ray will be in a Steelbook form containing the 4K Blu-ray disc and the Blu-ray disc. For the 4K enthusiasts reading this, the classic animated film has been restored in 4K and the visuals are rendered in native 4K.

Posted below are the technical details from Fire and Ice’s Blu-ray.com page.

    Video

    Codec: HEVC / H.265

    Resolution: Native 4K (2160p)

    HDR: Dolby Vision, HDR10

    Original aspect ratio: 1.85:1

    Audio

    English: Dolby Atmos

    English: Dolby TrueHD 7.1

    English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1

    English: DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0

Subtitles – English, English SDH, French, Spanish

    Discs – 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray Disc, Three-disc set (2 BD, 1 CD)

    Packaging – SteelBook

    Playback – 4K Blu-ray: Region free, 2K Blu-ray: Region A

I personally am interested in replaying Fire and Ice in 4K Blu-ray format. I saw Fire and Ice a few times a very long time ago on a rented video tape and on cable TV (randomly viewed it) but I never actually got to watch it entirely. Fire and Ice 4K Blu-ray is on my list of 4K Blu-ray releases of this year. I can only wonder when it would get offered via Amazon.

As for Ralph Bakshi, I admire his works on rotoscoped animation and how he visualized his concepts. His work on The Lord of the Rings animated film of 1978 was ambitious and he made the most out of their limited resources. I own a Blu-ray copy of his animated film American Pop and watching rotoscoped animated scenes and characters move in high-definition is enjoyable.

Fire and Ice, to the best of my memory, has a fantasy concept that reminds me somewhat of Conan The Barbarian (and the sword-and-sandals fantasy elements) and it also the traditional concept of the heroic man who risks his life to save an important woman from the forces of evil. To replay Fire and Ice in 4K is something I desire as a 4K Blu-ray collector and enthusiast of traditional animation.

Not to be outdone is the vocal cast that has William Ostrander, Maggie Roswell, Steve Sandor, Stephen Mendel and Susan Tyrell. The performances in Fire and Ice were strong.

  12. My youngest walked in while I was getting ready and asked me to take him to see The Backrooms in May. 2nd time this year he's asked me to take him to the movies and it's only Feb.

The Minecraft movie started it. Now both my kids are going regularly.

It's not that kids don't want to go to the movies. It's that they want something made for them.

I wouldn't write off the theater experience just yet.

  17. I finally got around to reading this lengthy article by Matthew Frank from #LetterBoxd from 2025-11-12. It talks about the decline of movie theaters, documents several anecdotes of movie-goers telling these theaters exactly what they want, and then ends with... begging Hollywood to go against its own interests? Huh?

The tl;dr of my commentary is that movie theaters don't sell screenings. They sell third spaces. The screening is just the cherry that makes you go there instead of anywhere else. If movie theaters want to survive, then they need to re-organize around that fact, and soon.

    letterboxd.com/email/crowd-ple

    ==============================

    >“Movie theaters are basically a dying art because of streaming. Streaming is killing the movie industry, and not just us. All movie theaters are struggling,” Ann says.
    >
    >“Streaming is making people want to sit at home,” Ann says. “Economics affect that. Right now, I think people are afraid of everything going on in the world and our country, and I think they’re holding on to their money. And that’s why I keep doing all these, instead of just movies, events.”

Streaming offers an effectively unlimited buffet of content, each month, for the price of a *single* screening at a movie theater, *before* food/concessions. If movie theaters are to persist, then the revenue model has to change. Those tickets have to be a couple bucks at most, and the producers and theaters have to hammer out a revenue-sharing agreement that works (assuming the producers even want to keep distributing their work in theaters at all).

    >“You can wait a month and watch it at home,” Kris says.

Ah yes. It's not that ticket prices are too high. It's "exclusivity" that's to blame. Folks, believe it or not, nobody goes to a movie theater to watch movies. They go to a theater to *commune around* the movies. If exclusivity was to blame, then no non-exclusive screening would ever sell.

    >In addition to the uniform consensus that Discount Tuesdays, when tickets are typically 50 percent off, are the hottest time of the week, every employee at virtually every type of theater will answer the question of “Who mainly comes here?” with the same answer: old people and families.

I rest my case. You're not selling screenings. You're selling a third space.

    >Back when he was growing up in Boone County, Nick would come twice a week with his aunts, and he misses the feeling of a packed theater. Now Nick and Ivory’s son “loves it,” he says, and when the family comes, they try to book a row without any other people in it because of how he runs around during films.

I said I rest my case.

    >The thing that’s holding them back, like many families, is the absurd cost of a trip to the multiplex. “Popcorn and two drinks cost us almost $30. It really adds up fast,” he says. “And tickets, I don’t know how to keep up with the prices on them because today I bought them for $12.50 apiece, and other times I come, they’re $24.”

You're not going to get back to the halcyon days of making large sums of money from the movie alone. Adapt or die.

    >Rather than going to see a movie in the theater, like the Fiesta Theatre in Colorado (pictured left, with manager Jordan), consumers are buying popcorn from their local venues—like the “Party Popcorn” concession that’s sold for takeout-only at Legacy Theatres (right)—to bring the experience home.

Hoo-Lee-Crap the theater industry cannot be this dense! The customer is literally telling you why they're showing up! It's not the fucking movie!

    >At a northeast Cinemark, I asked one of the employees how often people order their delivery. “Every day. You’d be surprised,” he tells me. “Most of the time, they get popcorn. Sometimes they get nachos. Sometimes they get a hot dog.”

Guysguysguysguys you're running a restaurant, a third space, with movies as the cherry on top that other third spaces lack.

    >But mostly, Gary wants to talk about the history of the Lyric. Every nook and cranny of this place has a story from the nearly 50 years his family has owned it. The most evocative: Up in the balcony, an unstable man once strapped an M80 firecracker to a pigeon he’d brought in. When the man set the pigeon loose, it thought the screen light was outdoors and flew straight into it, causing the pigeon to explode in the middle of the audience.

Well, it *is* Texas, I guess.

    >So Hollywood: don’t read this as an obituary. Read it as a to-do list. The crowd is waiting; the doors are open. Now give them something worth leaving the couch for—and price it so they can come back next week.

Perhaps theaters should look beyond Hollywood for what they project on their screens. Hollywood sees streaming as their way of cutting out the theater middle-men.

There was also a fair amount of weird dated referential humor that may have been McFarlane's influence, but honestly was probably just more Lonely Island guys stuff.
